Biodegradable film blends of soya bean flour with poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) were prepared by solution mixing and solution casting. The main goal of this study is to investigate the effect of soya bean flour content in the PVA film. Mechanical properties of the obtained blends were assessed by tensile testing, whereas the biodegradability were assessed by subjected the films in natural weathering. The incorporation of soya bean flour decreased the tensile strength and elongation at break of PVA film. However, the tensile modulus increased with the addition of soya bean flour. The reduction in tensile properties of the PVA/soya bean flour blend films revealed that the presence of soya bean flour show positive effect in degradation.

Blend films of feather keratin (FK) and synthetic poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) that were compatibilized by tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane (Tris) were successfully prepared by a solution-casting method. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results showed that a phase separation occurred in the FK/PVA/Tris blended system. Analysis by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy indicated that the main interactions between the three components were hydrogen bonds. In addition, X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the FK/PVA/Tris blend films were partially crystalline. The barrier properties, mechanical properties, and contact angles of the FK/PVA/Tris films were investigated to determine the effects of the PVA and Tris concentrations. More specifically, upon increasing the PVA content, the elongation at break, the hydrophilicity, and the oxygen barrier properties were enhanced. However, at a constant PVA content, an increase in the Tris content caused the oxygen permeability and the contact angle to decrease, while the tensile strength, elongation at break, and oxygen barrier properties were enhanced. These results indicated that the mechanical properties and gas resistance of the FK/PVA/Tris blend films could be successfully improved using the method described herein, confirming that this route provided a convenient and promising means to prepare FK plastics for practical applications.

Abstract Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVOH) resin is one of the most widely used water-soluble biodegradable polymer. Because of thermal degradation, PVOH exhibits limited melt processing and lacks moldability. The effects of adding glycerol as plasticizer and banana fibers (BF) to PVOH on its moldability and mechanical property were investigated. Melt blending of PVOH with glycerol and/or BF was performed in an internal mixer. The blended materials were then compression molded to produce tensile specimens. Various characterization techniques were employed to study the mechanical properties, compatibility, and crystallization behavior of the PVOH blends. By melt blending with glycerol, PVOH could be processed but decreased the tensile modulus, tensile strength, and crystallization temperature. Furthermore, the addition of BF enhanced the mechanical and thermal properties and crystallization temperature of plasticized PVOH due to compatibility between the two components. Apart from enhancing the mechanical properties and thermal stability, the incorporation of BF can reduce the production cost.

The mechanical properties, swelling, solubility, and optical properties of composite films with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and gelatin were studied. With increasing the PVA content in the composite films, the tensile strength (TS) and elongation at break (EB) of the films increase. The swelling and solubility are different with different gelatin/PVA ratios, with the lowest at 1:5.

Abstract This paper presents the interaction comparison of poly(vinyl) alcohol (PVA) with hydroxyapatite derived from Spanish Mackerel (SM) and Whitefin Wolf Herring (WWH) bones, in different processing method. PVA filament and solution casting method illustrated higher crystallinity in the FTIR graph as compared to the PVA pellet and filament extrusion method. Besides, minimal interactions between PVA with glycerol and HAp was observed as well. PVA pellet and solution casting method portrait higher interaction as compared to the PVA filament and extrusion method. As for the HAp of SM and WWH, WWH had higher crystallinity and better cell adhesion with a higher Ca/P ratio while SM had relatively better mechanical strength with Ca/P ratio near to stoichiometric value. The loading of HAp (0, 2.5, 5, 10, 20, 30%) does not affect interactions of PVA/HAp composite in FTIR, and thermal properties in TGA. However, it caused an increase in crystallinity at low HAp loading and decreased at higher loading of HAp above 10%. Upon addition of HAp, tensile strength increased and elongation at break decreased. As the loading of HAp increased, both mechanical properties decreased. Scaffold with WWH composite possessed lower tensile strength and higher elongation at break than SM composite. The result of mechanical properties corresponded to the SEM result. ANOVA analysis justified the effect of HAp variations and loading on the mechanical properties of the composite was prominent.

Tensile properties and morphological studies of linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE)/poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/kenaf (KNF) composites were investigated. The composites with different KNF loading (0, 10, 20, 30, 40 phr) were prepared using a Thermo Haake Polydrive internal mixer at 150°C and 50 rpm for 10 min. The results indicated that tensile strength and elongation at break were decreased with increasing KNF loading, whereas tensile modulus showed the opposite trend. Tensile fractured surfaces observed by scanning electron microscopy showed better interfacial adhesion between LLDPE/PVA and KNF at 10 phr KNF loading.

A novel chitosan/poly(vinyl alcohol) composite packaging films were prepared by the casting method, and the effects of chitosan concentration on the structures, mechanical properties, permeability for oxygen and water vapor were discussed in this study. Mechanical properties of these films, which were evaluated by the tensile test and the barrier properties showed that the elongation at break (E) of the composite films decreased rapidly with the addition of chitosan, whereas, the tensile strength (TS) presented an almost opposite trend. Both the water vapour and oxygen transmission rate values were increased with the increasing amount of the chitosan in the composite films. Based on the obtained results, the better property of the composites films would be prepared chitosan/poly(vinyl alcohol) blends at a weight ratio of 3/5, and the tensile strength and elongation at break of the packaging films were 34.12 MPa, 40.24 % respectively. It was also observed that the water vapor permeability coefficient (Pv) and the oxygen permeability coefficient (P) of chitosan/poly(vinyl alcohol) composite packaging films prepared with weight ratio of 3/5 were 1.99×10-15 g•cm/cm2•s•Pa and 7.98×10-16 cm3•cm/cm2•s•Pa respectively. The composite films in this paper can be used in fresh-keeping or other fields as a kind of green packaging material.

The goal of this paper is to determine the mechanical properties of a proposed combined polymer composite which consist of a poly-vinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix and palm kernel fibre reinforced with epoxy. The influence of fibres volume on the mechanical properties of the composites was also evaluated. Composites with volumetric amounts of palm kernel fibre up to 12 % were fabricated and they were arranged in randomly oriented discontinues form. Tensile, impact, flexural and hardness tests were carried out to determine the characteristics of material. The acquired results show that the tensile modulus changes with the fibre content. The strength of coconut fibre reinforced composites tends to decrease with the amount of fibre which indicates ineffective stress transfer between the fibre and matrix. When higher fibre content of 10% was used, the damping peak shows the maximum value for almost all the frequency mode. It was observed that the effects of reinforcing poly-vinyl alcohol (PVA matrix with the palm kernel fibres caused the composites to be more flexible and easily deform due to high strain values and reduction of high resonant amplitude. In general, the mechanical properties of the developed composite showed variation at different test performed. This led to the conclusion that the material is most useful were strength to weight ratio is needed. The optimum percentage of fibre in epoxy resin to obtain the highest tensile properties was found at 10 vol. %. It was also found that fibre, dispersion of fibre and interfacial adhesion between fibre–matrix can affect the mechanical properties of the composites.
