ZnO nanocrystalline thin films have been prepared on glass substrates by sol-gel dip coating method. The ZnO thin films have been coated at room temperature for the pH value of 10 and annealed at 300°, 400° and 500°C respectively. The X- ray diffraction pattern shows that ZnO nanocrystalline thin films are of hexagonal structure and the grain size is found to be in the range of 25-45 nm. Scanning electron microscope images show that the surface morphology improves with increase of annealing temperature. The TEM analysis reveals the formation of ZnO nanocrystalline with an average grain size of 44 nm. The compositional analysis results show that Zn and O are present in the sample. The optical studies shows that the films are highly transparent and exhibit a direct band gap. The band gap has been found to lie in the range of 3.07 to 3.32 nm depending on the annealed temperature suggesting the formation of ZnO nanocrystalline thin films.

For effectively fabricating nanocrystalline ZnO thin films by the sol-gel method, the relationships between the temperature of the heat treatment and the quality of the ZnO thin films was observed. The decomposition of the sol was analyzed by TG-DTA. The orientation of the c-axis of the ZnO thin film was identified by XRD. The morphology was observed and estimated by SEM. The experimental results did show that the orientation of the c-axis is determined by the pre-heating and annealing temperatures, and that the grain size and roughness of the ZnO thin films are mainly influenced by the annealing temperature. A qualified ZnO thin film was prepared by using a sol-gel with a preheating temperature of 275 °C for 10 min and an annealing temperature of 550 °C for 60 min.

Recent research papers for zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films prepared by dip-coating method are reviewed. The aim is on the factors affecting the properties of ZnO thin films prepared by dip-coating method and the preparation of ZnO solution precursor using sol-gel process. Several of journals have been discovered to find out the related study on this topic. It was found that solution chemical equilibrium, substrate and thermal processing are the factors that contribute to the various properties of ZnO thin films. This review hopefully can help in improving the properties of ZnO thin film for possible applications to photoconductor, integrated sensor, transparent conducting oxide electrodes, optoelectronic devices and so on.
