Recently, a piezoelectric method using piezoelectric characteristics of epoxy adhesives has been successfully developed for the adhesive joints, which can monitor continuously the damage of adhesively bonded structures without producing any defect induced by inserting a sensor. However, due to low piezoelectric properties of epoxy adhesives, the detection of micro crack was impossible. At the cryogenic temperature, the detection of micro crack is important to estimate the fatigue life because the polymeric adhesives become very brittle. Therefore, in this work, the epoxy adhesive was modified by quartz nano-particles which have much higher piezoelectric properties than the epoxy adhesives. To investigate the effects of quartz nano-particles, the static and dynamic tests of the tubular adhesive joints were performed to compare the joint strength and sensitivity of damage monitoring performance. From the experiment result, it was found that the quartz nano-particles not only improved the joint strength but also increased the sensitivity of damage monitoring performance at cryogenic temperature.

The article presents the issues of the mechanical properties of epoxy adhesives and the adhesive joints strength of steel sheets which were made using the epoxy adhesives. The aim of the paper is to study the mechanical properties of epoxy adhesive of different epoxy resin/curing agent ratios (within and above the recommended stoichiometric ratio) and their effect on mechanical properties of adhesive joints of steel sheets. In experimental tests three types of epoxy adhesives, containing a low molecular weight epoxy resin based on bisphenol A and polyamide curing agent, were used. A single-lap adhesive joint type of stainless-steel sheets was also applied. Two types of strength test were used: the compressive strength tests (DIN EN 196-1) for epoxy adhesive samples and the shear strength tests (DIN EN 1465) for adhesive joints. Both the analysis of the strength results of the samples of epoxy adhesive and adhesive joints as well as the failure analysis was carried out. On the basis of the results of strength tests it can be stated that the greatest deformation occurred for the samples of epoxy adhesive containing the modified epoxy resin (epoxy number—0.40) and the polyamide curing agent, and the smallest for the samples of epoxy adhesive containing the basic epoxy resin (epoxy number—0.49–0.52) and the polyamide curing agent. The epoxy adhesives with a smaller amount of curing agent were characterized by higher strength. This applies to all analyzed epoxy resins. The same dependences were obtained for the strength of adhesive joints of steel sheets made of the analyzed epoxy adhesive.

The presented work focuses on the effects of water degradation on the long-term behaviour of adhesive joints. The objective of this study is to measure the evolution of various mechanical properties such as tensile stress and fracture toughness as a function of humidity for two distinct adhesives, using bulk adhesive and double cantilever beam specimens in unaged and aged conditions in order to understand the influence of humidity on the adhesive properties. A mathematical equation that allows the prediction of each property degradation as a function of water is proposed and validated, which takes into account various parameters such as the diffusion coefficient, resulting in a general equation for mechanical property degradation prediction of potentially any adhesive. It was also found that the distinct adhesive properties such as strength, stiffness and fracture toughness all decreased due to water degradation with the exception of the strain that increased, concluding that water reduces the joint strength and lifespan of the studied adhesives, although in different ways.

The joining techniques of lightweight and strong materials in the transport industry (e.g. automotive, aerospace, shipbuilding industries) are very important for the safety of the entire structure. In these industries, when compared with other joining methods, the use of adhesively bonded joints presents unique properties such as greater strength, design flexibility, and reduction in fuel consumption, all thanks to low weight. The aim of this study was the analysis of the tensile fatigue behavior of adhesively bonded glass fiber/epoxy laminated composite single-lap joints with three different specimen types including 30, 40 and 50 mm overlap lengths. In this study, composite adherents were manufactured via vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding and were bonded using Loctite 9461 A&B toughened epoxy adhesive. The effect of a surface treatment method on the bonding strength was considered and it led to an increment of about 40%. A numerical analysis based on a finite element model was performed to predict fatigue life curve, and the predicted results showed good agreement with the experimental investigation.

Abstract Adhesively bonded joints are ubiquitous in electronic assemblies that are used in a wide range of applications, which include automotive, medical, military, space and communications. The steady drive to reduce the size of assemblies in all of these applications, while providing increased functionality, generates a need for adhesive joints of higher strength, improved thermal and electrical conductivity and better dielectric isolation. All of these attributes of adhesive joints are degraded by the presence of voids in them. The quest to minimize voids in bonded structures motivated a previous study of their formation in a solvent cast, die bond epoxy film, which undergoes a liquid phase transition during cure. That work is extended in this study by including the effects of various filler morphologies in the adhesive. Fillers are added to adhesives to facilitate handling of thin sheet formats, control bond line thickness and reduce coefficient of thermal expansion. As such, fillers are selected to be inert with respect to the adhesive chemistry, while being readily wetted by it in the liquid state. Common filler morphologies include woven and molded open meshes, fibers chopped to uniform length, and spheres of uniform or distributed diameters. Void formation is influenced by a number factors, which include wettability of the bonded surfaces, adsorbed water, amount of solvent retained in the film, volume of entrapped air, thermal profile of the cure schedule, and clamping pressure during cure. The presence of fillers in the adhesive adds the additional factors of constrained diffusion paths and increased area for void nucleation. We have changed our approach to modeling the diffusion of volatile species in adhesive joints from a finite difference calculation in a uniform adhesive medium used previously, to a finite element model of a complex diffusion space. The open source program Gmsh is used to generate the diffusion space from a set of input parameters. The calculations of concentration profiles and diffusion fluxes of volatile species at the void interface are made using the open source finite element program elmer. As done previously, the position of the void interface is updated by integrating the product of time and flux of diffusing species over the area of the interface. The internal pressure of the void is determined by application of the Young-Laplace equation, while Henry’s law is used to estimate the concentration of diffusing species adjacent to the void interface. The calculation proceeds for a time equivalent to the integral of the time temperature product required to achieve a 70% cure state of the adhesive, at which point the void interface is immobile. The experimental approach is the same as used previously, with the filled adhesive sandwiched between glass slides and cured on a hot plate while imaged through a microscope. Images are automatically captured and analyzed by using the open source program imageJ, which allows us to track the evolution of individual voids as well as the time dependent distribution of the void population. We are working to correlate these experimental results with the predictions of our finite element calculations to allow us to make insightful choices of adhesives and optimize our bonding processes.

In this paper, the effect of graphene nanoparticle additive on the strength of simple and hybrid (rivet-bonded) single-lap joints is studied using the experimental method. Two different types of graphene with different number of layer and thicknesses are used in adhesive-graphene nanoparticle composite construction. At first, tensile tests are done on bulk specimens of adhesive with different additives. It is found that adding 0.5 wt% of graphene to the neat adhesive leads to an increase in the ultimate tensile strength of bulk specimens almost 24% and 12% for two graphene types compared to the neat adhesive. Also, the shear strength of adhesive and hybrid lap joints incorporating two types of graphene nanoparticles (types I and II) is compared to that of adhesive and hybrid joints without graphene nanoparticles. SEM results of fracture surfaces show that the inclusion of graphene nanoparticle to the adhesive increases the roughness of surfaces. Experimental results reveal that graphene nanoparticle increases the strength of bonded and hybrid joints. It is observed that, graphene with a lower thickness and number of layers has a better influence on joint strength. In fact, graphene nanoparticle type II makes a homogeneous distribution in adhesive-graphene nanoparticle composite and causes a significant increase on joint strength.
