Fractal Study of Land Use Change in the Tailan River Basin, Xinjiang, China

Based on the land use data observed over the Tailan River Basin (TRB) during the years 1990, 2000, 2005 and 2008, fractal theory is adopted and applied to expound spatial distribution characteristics and variation law of land use change in the arid inland TRB, Xinjiang, China. The results demonstrate spatial fractal characteristics in all land use types. The analysis indicate that the fractal dimensions of different land use types in the TRB are in the order of waters > industrial, mining and residential areas > farmlands > grasslands > unused lands > woodlands in 1990, and in the order of waters > industrial, mining and residential areas > grasslands > farmlands > woodlands > unused lands in 2000, and in the order of waters > industrial, mining and residential areas > grasslands > woodlands > farmlands >unused lands in 2005, and in the order of waters > industrial, mining and residential areas > grasslands > unused lands > woodlands > farmlands in 2008. The fractal dimension values of land use in the TRB in 1990, 2000, 2005 and 2008 are calculated as 1.5993, 1.5986, 1.6079 and 1.6348 respectively. Fractal dimension of land use in the basin is decreased at first then increased, the spatial structure of land used exhibit complex trend, while the land use types show an increase trend. The stability indexes of spatial structure of land use in the TRB in 1990, 2000, 2005 and 2008 are 0.1720, 0.1563, 0.1435 and 0.1428 respectively. These values suggest that the stability of the spatial structure of land use in the basin is gradually decreased.

In order to improve the study of the spatial form of villages, fractal theory is used to analyze the plane and facade of Maling Village, Changdai Town, Mengjin County, Luoyang City, Henan Province, China. The results show that the village facade and plane spatial shape of Maling Village have obvious fractal characteristics and the fractal dimension can be used as an important index to evaluate the plane and facade shape of the village. The fractal dimension of each land use type is between 1.2415 and 1.7443. The stability index of land use types in the village follows the order of village construction land > cultivated land > road > garden land > woodland > grassland. The research results can provide decision-making information for the rational use and planning of village land.

Based on the spatial land use database of Mingcheng town of Panshi City in Jilin, fractal dimension and stability of land use types are studied by using GIS technology and fractal theory. The land use is classified into 7 types: cropland, garden plot, wood land, water, road land, industrial and mining, residential areas, unused land, and other lands. The fractal dimension for the patches of the land use types is analyzed. Results showed that all the land use types have fractal characteristics and the fractal dimension (D) values vary from 1.1028 to 1.6638. In terms of the land use stability given by the fractal dimension, the order of the land use types from high to low is water, industrial and mining residential areas, cropland, wood land, unused land, road land, garden plot. And land use shape index, fragmentation index and the separation index in the spatial distribution law are largely affected by human activities influence and interference, then it can provided reference for the reason utilizing of land resource.

Due to the differences in the contributions of land use types to ecosystem health and human wellbeing, there is a trade-off and a coordinating relationship between ecosystem health and human wellbeing, which affects the sustainable development of a river basin. To explore the impacts of the responses of ecosystem health and human wellbeing and the combined effects under land use change, this paper, taking the Manas River Basin (MRB) as an example, evaluated the health status of the MRB by the model: Vitality (V), organization (O), resilience (R), and services (S). From a sustainability perspective, an index system of human wellbeing was constructed, which included society and the economy, health and safety, materials and resources, and ecology and the environment. On this basis, the coupling coordination relationship and sustainable development status of the basin was assessed. The results showed that as land use changed, the ecosystem health showed a downward trend, and human wellbeing grew exponentially. The sustainable development index and the coupling coordination degree of the MRB were similar, indicating that the level of balance between ecosystem health and human wellbeing was the key to the sustainable development of the basin, and the overall situation was in a state of moderate imbalance and moderate unsustainability. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out sustainable management of the whole basin.

The desert-oasis ecotone, as a crucial natural barrier, maintains the stability of oasis agricultural production and protects oasis habitat security. This paper investigates the dynamic evolution of the desert-oasis ecotone in the Tarim River Basin and predicts the near-future land-use change in the desert-oasis ecotone using the cellular automata–Markov (CA-Markov) model. Results indicate that the overall area of the desert-oasis ecotone shows a shrinking trend (from 67,642 km2 in 1990 to 46,613 km2 in 2015) and the land-use change within the desert-oasis ecotone is mainly manifested by the conversion of a large amount of forest and grass area into arable land. The increasing demand for arable land for groundwater has led to a decline in the groundwater level, which is an important reason for the habitat deterioration in the desert-oasis ecotone. The rising temperature and drought have further exacerbated this trend. Assuming the current trend in development without intervention, the CA-Markov model predicts that by 2030, there will be an additional 1566 km2 of arable land and a reduction of 1151 km2 in forested area and grassland within the desert-oasis ecotone, which will inevitably further weaken the ecological barrier role of the desert-oasis ecotone and trigger a growing ecological crisis.

AbstractLand use/cover change plays an important role in human development and environmental health and stability. Markov chain and a future land use simulation model were used to predict future change and simulate the spatial distribution of land use in the Huang-Huai-Hai river basin. The results show that cultivated land and grassland are the main land-use types in the basin, accounting for about 40% and 30%, respectively. The area of cultivated land decreased and artificial surfaces increased from 1980 to 2010. The degree of dynamic change of land use after the 1990s was greater than that before the 1990s. There is a high probability of exchange among cultivate land, forest and grassland. The area of forest decreased before 2000 and increased after 2000. Under the three emission scenarios (RCP2.6, RCP4.5, and RCP8.5) of IPSL-CM5A-LR climate model, the area of cultivated land will decrease and that of grassland will increase in the upstream area while it will decrease in the downstream area. The above methods and rules will be of great help to future land use planning.
