The lithium lanthanum borate glasses doped with Dy2O3 were prepared by the melt quenching technique. The Dy2O3 doped concentration has been increased and substituted B2O3 from 0.00 to 1.50 mol% in the glasses. The photoluminescence, optical absorption and physical properties of these glasses have been investigated in this work. The experimental results show that, the molar volume of glasses tended to increase with increasing of Dy2O3 concentration, but the density were not depending on the concentration of Dy2O3. The UV-Vis-NIR spectra, absorption bands at 451, 798, 894, 1085 1264 and 1676 nm have been observed. For Dy3+ doped glasses, emission bands centered at 483, 575 and 664 nm have been observed with 388 nm excitation wavelength. The emission spectra have shown the strongest band in the glasses with 0.50 mol% Dy2O3 concentration.

The photoluminescence and physical properties of lithium yttrium borate glasses doped with Eu2O3were studied in this work. The glasses were prepared by the melt-quenching technique and varied the Eu2O3doped concentration between 0.00-1.50 mol%. We found that, the molar volume and density of these glasses showed linear increasing tendency with Eu2O3concentration. The absorption bands were observed in UV and NIR region. For the Eu3+doped glasses, the excitation bands centered at 363, 383, 394, 414, 465, 526 and 533 nm were observed with 613 nm emission wavelength. While in the emission spectra, the bands centered at 590, 613, 652 and 701 nm were observed with excitation of 394 nm. The intensity of excitation and emission bands increased with increasing of Eu2O3concentration.

The glass samples have been prepared by the melt-quenching technique at 1200°C. It was found that the density of glasses tended to increase with increasing of Sm2O3 concentration. While, the molar volume of glasses tended to decrease with increasing of Sm2O3 concentration higher than 0.1 mol%. The absorption spectra of glasses were recorded in the ultraviolet visible near infrared (UV-Vis-NIR) region. The absorption bands centered at 374, 402, 416, 438, 473, 527, 946, 1083, 1236, 1382, 1483, 1531 and 1977 nm, respectively have been observed. The emission spectra of glass samples centered at 561, 597, 643 and 704 nm corresponding to the energy levels from 4G5/2 to 6H5/2, 6H7/2, 6H9/2 and 6H11/2, respectively have been observed with 402 nm excitation wavelength.

In this work, effect of Li2O and Na2O on bismuth borate glasses have been investigated. The glass samples were prepared in composition 44B2O3 : 50Bi2O3 : 5Li2O : 1A2O3 and 44B2O3 : 50Bi2O3 : 5Na2O3 : 1A2O3 (where A2O3= Sm2O3 and Dy2O3).Glasses were prepared using the melt-quenching technique at 1,100 oc under normal atmosphere. The result found that, the density and molar volume of lithium bismuth borate glasses are less than sodium bismuth borate glasses both in Sm2O3 and Dy2O3. In addition, the optical absorption spectra and luminescence of lithium bismuth borate glasses are higher than sodium bismuth borate glasses both in Sm2O3 and Dy2O3.

Pr3+-doped Li2O – Gd2O3 – B2O3 glasses (LGBO glass) with the formula 60Li2O:10Gd2O3:(30-x)B2O3:xPrO3 were fabricated using melt quenching technique. The five glass samples with different concentrations of Pr2O3 were prepared under atmospheric pressure. The samples were investigated on their properties: absorption and photoluminescence. All absorption bands are increase with increasing of Pr3+ content. The emission spectra were measured with 446 nm light pumped by xenon lamp. The maximum luminescence intensity was observed at x = 0.50 mol% andthe CIE color coordinates showed the bluish purple emission light for this concentration.

In this study, the effect of zinc bismuth borate (ZBB) glass and bismuth borate glass (BB) doped with trivalent dysprosium ion were investigated. Glass were prepared by the conventional melt quenching technique, with the chemical composition of (60-x) B2O3: 30Bi2O3: 10ZnO: xDy2O3 and (70-x) B2O3: 30Bi2O3: xDy2O3 where x = 1.0 mol %. The results show the densities of glasses are 3.91 g/cm3(ZBB) and 4.24 g/cm3 (BB), respectively. The absorption spectra consists of six absorption bands that are located at 752, 796, 902, 1096, 1276 and 1681 nm, and are assigned to 6H15/2 to 6F3/2,6F5/2, 6F7/2, 6H7/2+6F9/2, 6F11/2+6H9/2 and 6H11/2 transitions. The emission spectra exhibited three emission bands corresponding to the 4F9/2 → 6H15/2 (483 nm; blue), 4F9/2 → 6H13/2 (575 nm; yellow) and 4F9/2 → 6H11/2 (664 nm; red) transitions. The lifetime for 4F9/2 → 6H13/2 transition are 0.178 ms (ZBB) and 0.420 ms (BB). Both of Dy3+ in ZBB and BB glasses have been show white emission and illustrated by CIE 1931 chromaticity coordinates.
