Model-driven architecture and service-oriented architecture are popular software development methods at the present, these two methods have their own advantages and disadvantages, the proposed SOA-based Model-driven Rapid Development Architecture by combining these two methods, Using colored Petri nets’ tools to study service composition methods specifically, and described five basic logical structure of service composition through formal methods, then gave out the construction method of composite services, finally, verified the effectiveness and safety of the service composition method through the modeling.

Cloud computing is changing the way enterprises develop and deploy information systems. With the rapid development and successful implementations of the model-driven architecure(MDA) and service-oriented architecture (SOA), clouding computing has become the focus of researches. This paper describes the design and implementation of a service template markup language (STML) and its integrated development tools, which provide a comprehensive solution to the reconfiguration of applications over cloud computing platforms. In the paper, we first analyze and point out the limitations of current software reconfiguration approaches, then propose a framework for a SMDA-based approach to software reconfiguration in a PaaS platform, next present a series of PaaS service models and an XML-based service template markup language, finally conclude by an example showing the practicability of the tools.

The Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) and Representational State Transfer (REST) architectural styles are the most used for the integration of enterprise applications. Each is more adequate to a different class of applications and exhibits advantages and disadvantages. This chapter performs a comparative study between them. It is shown that SOA and REST are dual architectural styles, one oriented towards behavior and the other towards state. This raises the question of whether it is possible to combine them to maximize the advantages and to minimize the disadvantages. A new architectural style, Structural Services, is proposed to obtain the best characteristics from SOA and REST. As in SOA, services are able to offer a variable set of operations and, as in REST, resources are allowed to have structure. This style uses structural interoperability, based on structural compliance and conformance. A service-oriented programming language is also introduced to instantiate this architectural style.

In the Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) model, a service is characterized by its exchange of asynchronous messages, and a service contract is a desirable composition of a variety of messages. Though this model is simple, implementing large-scale, cross-organizational distributed applications may be difficult to achieve in general, as there is no guarantee that service composition will be possible because of incompatibilities of Web service contracts. We categorize compatibility issues in Web service contracts into two broad categories: (a) between contracts of different services (which we define as a composability problem), and (b) a service contract and its implementation (which we define as a conformance problem). This chapter examines and addresses these problems, first by identifying and specifying contract compatibility conditions, and second, through the use of compatibility checking tools that enable application developers to perform checks at design time.

Service composition is a widely accepted method to build service-oriented applications. However, due to the uncertainty of infrastructure environments, service performance and user requests, service composition faces a great challenge to guarantee the dependability of the corresponding composite services. In this chapter, we provide an insightful analysis of the dependability issue of composite services. And we present a solution based on two-level redundancy: component service redundancy and structural redundancy. With component service redundancy, we study how to determine the number of backup services and how to guarantee consistent dependability of a composite service. In addition, structural redundancy aims at further improving dependability at business process level through setting up backup execution paths.

Since the early 1980s, Open Source Software (OSS) has gained a strong interest and an increased acceptance in the software industry that has to date initiated a “paradigm shift” (O’Reilly, 2004). The Open Source paradigm has introduced wholly new means of software development and distribution, creating a significant impact on the evolution of numerous business processes. In this chapter we examine the impact of the open source paradigm in the e-Procurement evolution and identify a trend towards Open Source e-Procurement Application Frameworks (AFs) which enable the development of tailored e-Procurement Solutions. Anchored in this notion, we present an Open-Source e-Procurement AF with a two-phase generation procedure. The innovative aspect of the proposed model relates to the combination of the Model Driven Engineering (MDE) approach with the Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) paradigm for enabling the cost-effective production of e-Procurement Solutions by facilitating integration, interoperability, easy maintenance, and management of possible changes in the European e-Procurement environment. The assessment process of the proposed AF and its resulting e-Procurement Solutions occurs in the context of G2B in the Western-Balkan European region. Our evaluation yields positive results and further enhancing opportunities for the proposed Open Source e-Procurement AF and its resulting e-Procurement Solutions.

Service-based systems have many applications, such as collaborative research and development, e-business, health care, military applications and homeland security. In these systems, it is necessary to provide users the capability of composing appropriate services into workflows offering higher-level functionality based on declaratively specified goals. In a large-scale and dynamic service-oriented computing environment, it is desirable that the service composition is automated and situation-aware so that robust and adaptive workflows can be generated. However, existing languages for web services are not expressive enough to model services with situation awareness (SAW) and side effects. This chapter presents an approach to rapid development of adaptable situation-aware service-based systems. This approach is based on the a-logic and a-calculus, and a declarative model for SAW. This approach consists of four major components: (1) analyzing SAW requirements using our declarative model for SAW, (2) translating the model representation to a-logic specifications and specifying a control flow graph in a-logic as the goal for situation-aware service composition., (3) automated synthesis of a-calculus terms that define situation-aware workflow agents for situation-aware service composition, and (4) compilation of a-calculus terms to executable components on an agent platform. An example of applying our framework in developing a distributed control system for intelligently and reliably managing a power grid is given.

Service oriented architecture has revolutionized the way a traditional business process is executed. The success of this architecture is Indue to the composition of multiple heterogeneous services at runtime. Web service composition is a mechanism where several web services are combined at runtime to build a complex application for a user. It is one of the most sought after processes in the context of semantic web. But, composition of web services at runtime is a difficult task owing to the availability of multiple service providers offering the same functionality. The process if exasperated by due conflicting preferences of a service consumer. In this paper, the authors address the issue of selecting a service based on Quality of Service (QoS) attributes. They utilize concepts customized from physics to create an environment that facilitates the selection of a best service from the set of similar services. The technique not only facilitates the selection of the service with the best QoS attributes, but distributes the load among expeditiously. Here in this paper, the authors concentrate on minimizing and equitably balancing the waiting time for a user. They conduct in silico experiments on multiple workflows to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed technique to balance load efficiently among similar service offerings.

Service-Orientated Computing (SOC) has become a main trend in software engineering that promotes the construction of applications based on the notion of services. SOC has recently attracted the researchers' attention and has been adopted industry-wide. However, service composition that enables one to aggregate existing services into a new composite service is still a highly complex and critical task in service-oriented technology. To enhance availability of composite services, we propose a discovery-based service composition framework to better integrate component services in both static and dynamic manner, including (1) to devise a notion of service availability especially for composition; (2) to develop a dynamic service composition (DSC) pattern for addressing the issues of service availability; and (3) to extend Contract Net Protocol (ECNP) to coordinate service discovery, composition and invocation based on the composite pattern. The main benefit of the proposed approach is better availability through attaching multiple candidate services for future binding.
