Soap-free Cationic polystyrene microspheres were prepared by emulsion polymerization using a water soluble monomer Methacrylatoethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (MADAC). Experimental studies were performed in detail to check the effect of the synthesis process of the microspheres, the MADAC dosage, and initiator dosage on the particle size and distribution. The chemical structure of latex particles was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The micro-morphology of latex particles were observed by Transmission electron microscope. The results show that different particle sizes of polystyrene microspheres with good monodispersity were finally obtained by seeded semi-continuous emulsion polymerization.

Water-soluble gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were prepared using 2-mercapto-4-methyl-5- thiazoleacetic acid (MMTA) as a stabilizing agent and sodium borohydride (NaBH4) as a reducing agent. The AuNPs product was analyzed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-vis absorption spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The TEM image shows that the particles were well-dispersed and their average particle size is about 5 nm. The UV-vis absorption and FTIR spectra confirm that the MMTA-AuNPs was stabilized by the carboxylate ions present on the surface of the AuNPs.

In this paper, we report a convenient and informative procedure for detecting the morphology and surface structure of individual gold nanocrystals using digital Crystal Image Software (CIS) processing of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) image, which comprises coalescence phenomena of these nanoparticles. The results show that the internal structure of Au nanoparticles has a core of gold atoms arranged as a Marks decahedron, surrounded by additional gold–organic compound layers forming a rigid surface layer, and its outer layer comprises four staple motif bridge molecules that resemble handles, formed an unusual pattern. The obtained results improved our understanding of the basics of the coalescence phenomena such as the driving mechanisms acting at different particle sizes. However, these discrete natures of the nanoparticles will assist in the understanding of principles of nanocore assembly and opens a new window for nanoparticles chemistry.

Gout is a disease with a high incidence and causing great harm, and the current treatment drugs are not satisfactory. In this study, novel water-soluble carbon dots (CDs) with anti-gout effect, named Puerariae lobatae Radix CDs (PLR-CDs), are reported. PLR-CDs were synthesized with an improved pyrolysis method at 300 °C, and their characterization was performed with multifaceted approaches, such as transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. In addition, the biocompatibility of PLR-CDs was studied using the cell counting kit (CCK)-8 in LO2 cells and RAW264.7 cells, and the anti-gout activity of PLR-CDs was examined on animal models of hyperuricemia and gouty arthritis. The characterization of PLR-CDs indicated that they were nearly spherical, with diameters ranging from 3.0 to 10.0 nm, and the lattice spacing was 0.283 nm. The toxicity experiment revealed that PLR-CDs were non-poisonous for LO2 cells and RAW264.7 cells at concentrations below 250 μg/mL. The results of pharmacodynamic experiments showed that PLR-CDs could lower the blood uric acid level in model rats by inhibiting the activity of xanthine oxidase and reduce the degree of swelling and pathological damage of gouty arthritis. Thus, PLR-CDs with anti-gout biological activity and good biocompatibility have the prospect of clinical application for the treatment of gout.

The activation effect of ball-to-powder ratio and activation time on phosphorite ore that takes place in mechanochemical activation has been investigated in present paper, which is carried out in a planetary mill AGO-II. The results show that, particle sizes decreased after activation; the leaching rate of water-soluble P2O5 increased 4.6 percentage as ball-to-powder ratio rose from 8:1 to 40:1; the activated particle of samples has been highly dispersed, while the leaching rate of water-soluble P2O5 reached 10.1% after milling 15 minutes during activation, which was 4 times as high as the un-activated samples. The results show a potential utilization of low-medium grade phosphorite ore with mechanochemical activation directly.

Abstract In this study, a simple environmental benign approach have been adopted for the preparation of highly luminescent (blue emitting) water soluble carbon nano-dots using Pongammia pinnata (Pp) leaves via hydrothermal technique. The prepared Pp-carbon nano- dots were characterized using UV-vis spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements. The Pp-carbon nano-dots are spherical in shape with an average size of 32 nm.

Starch tartarate nanoparticles were prepared by esterification reaction between native sago starch (Metroxylon sagu) and tartaric acid using dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO) as a solvent and 2-dimethylamino pyridine (DMAP) as a catalyst at 100°C. The substitution of tartaric acid onto native sago starch was confirmed by the FTIR spectra which showed the presence of carbonyl group absorption band of tartarate ester. The solubility of the as-synthesized starch tartarate nanoparticles was observed to increase linearly with increase in the degrees of substitution. Under optimized synthesis conditions, starch tartarate nanoparticles of mean particle sizes which ranged from 200 nm to 300 nm were produced.

Smooth and uniform Ag/AgO nanoshells (about 3–4 nm) on carboxylated polystyrene latex particles were prepared by electrostatic attraction between negatively charged –COO− on the surface of carboxylated polystyrene latex particles and positively charged Ag(NH3)2+ in the solution, and subsequent decomposition of the silver complex. The resultant nanoparticles were characterized with Fourier transform infrared, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and x-ray diffraction. The effects of reducing agents, the amount of NaOH and temperature on the morphology of hybrid latex particles were discussed.
