Gout is a disease with a high incidence and causing great harm, and the current treatment drugs are not satisfactory. In this study, novel water-soluble carbon dots (CDs) with anti-gout effect, named Puerariae lobatae Radix CDs (PLR-CDs), are reported. PLR-CDs were synthesized with an improved pyrolysis method at 300 °C, and their characterization was performed with multifaceted approaches, such as transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. In addition, the biocompatibility of PLR-CDs was studied using the cell counting kit (CCK)-8 in LO2 cells and RAW264.7 cells, and the anti-gout activity of PLR-CDs was examined on animal models of hyperuricemia and gouty arthritis. The characterization of PLR-CDs indicated that they were nearly spherical, with diameters ranging from 3.0 to 10.0 nm, and the lattice spacing was 0.283 nm. The toxicity experiment revealed that PLR-CDs were non-poisonous for LO2 cells and RAW264.7 cells at concentrations below 250 μg/mL. The results of pharmacodynamic experiments showed that PLR-CDs could lower the blood uric acid level in model rats by inhibiting the activity of xanthine oxidase and reduce the degree of swelling and pathological damage of gouty arthritis. Thus, PLR-CDs with anti-gout biological activity and good biocompatibility have the prospect of clinical application for the treatment of gout.

Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (GRR) is one of the commonly used traditional Chinese medicines in clinical practice, which has been applied to treat digestive system diseases for hundreds of years. GRR is preferred for anti-gastric ulcer, however, the main active compounds are still unknown. In this study, GRR was used as precursor to synthesize carbon dots (CDs) by a environment-friendly one-step pyrolysis process. GRR-CDs were characterized by using transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution TEM, fourier transform infrared, ultraviolet-visible and fluorescence spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and high-performance liquid chromatography. In addition, cellular toxicity of GRR-CDs was studied by using CCK-8 in RAW264.7 cells, and the anti-gastric ulcer activity was evaluated and confirmed using mice model of acute alcoholic gastric ulcer. The experiment confirmed that GRR-CDs were the spherical structure with a large number of active groups on the surface and their particle size ranged from 2 to 10 nm. GRR-CDs had no toxicity to RAW264.7 cells at concentration of 19.5 to 5000 μg/mL and could reduce the oxidative damage of gastric mucosa and tissues caused by alcohol, as demonstrated by restoring expression of malondialdehyde, superoxide dismutase and nitric oxide in serum and tissue of mice. The results indicated the explicit anti-ulcer activity of GRR-CDs, which provided a new insights for the research on effective material basis of GRR.

Water-soluble gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were prepared using 2-mercapto-4-methyl-5- thiazoleacetic acid (MMTA) as a stabilizing agent and sodium borohydride (NaBH4) as a reducing agent. The AuNPs product was analyzed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-vis absorption spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The TEM image shows that the particles were well-dispersed and their average particle size is about 5 nm. The UV-vis absorption and FTIR spectra confirm that the MMTA-AuNPs was stabilized by the carboxylate ions present on the surface of the AuNPs.

A simple and green hydrothermal method was developed for preparation of water-soluble nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) from streptomycin. The prepared N-CDs reveal low toxicity, high stability and good biocompatibility, which can be used as fluorescent probes for cell imaging.

Abstract In this study, a simple environmental benign approach have been adopted for the preparation of highly luminescent (blue emitting) water soluble carbon nano-dots using Pongammia pinnata (Pp) leaves via hydrothermal technique. The prepared Pp-carbon nano- dots were characterized using UV-vis spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements. The Pp-carbon nano-dots are spherical in shape with an average size of 32 nm.

Chinese medicine is a treasure of the Chinese nation, and charcoal drugs are a class of medicine with distinctive characteristics. Scutellariae Radix Carbonisata (SRC) could be a sort of calcined herb medicate that has been utilized in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) clinics to treat hypersensitivities. However, to date, the function of the carbonized part and action mechanisms of SRCs have not been elucidated. In this study, novel water-soluble carbon dots (CDs, named SRC-CDs) ranging from 2 to 9 nm were observed and separated from aqueous extracts of SRC. These SRC-CDs were characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution TEM, as well as Fourier transform infrared, ultraviolet-visible, and fluorescence spectroscopy, to determine particle size, morphology, chemical structure, and optical properties. Then, the in vitro antiallergic efficacy of the SRC-CDs was studied in a C48/80-induced RBL-2H3 cell model, in which remarkable antiallergic effects were revealed. These results will provide new solution directions and technical methods for follow-up research of charcoal drugs and new understanding of potential biomedical applications of CDs.

Polysaccharide is one of the important active ingredients of Cantharellus cibarius. The aims of this work were to analyze preliminary characterization and to investigate immunostimulating activity of a novel water-soluble neutral polysaccharide named JP1, which was purified from the fruiting body of Cantharellus cibarius using DEAE-FF chromatography and Sephadex G-100 chromatography. The characteristics of JP1 were determined by HPGPC, FT-IR spectra, gas chromatography, and Congo Red Method. Immunostimulating activity of JP1 was investigated in RAW264.7 cells. Results indicated that JP1 consisted of L-Arabinose, D-Mannose, D-Glucose, and D-Galactose in a molar ratio of 1 : 1.06 : 1.95 : 1.17 with a molecular weight of 336 kDa. JP1 is nontoxic to RAW264.7 cells at this concentration range (62.5–1000 μg/mL). Furthermore, JP1 can promote mouse peritoneal macrophages to secrete NO and enhance the secretion of macrophages’ cytokines IL-6 in RAW264.7 cells. These results suggested that JP1 could have potential immunostimulating activity applications as medicine or functional food.

ABSTRACTIn this paper, hydrothermal method has been employed to synthesize oxygen-modified carbon dots (O-CDs) from citric acid and nitrogen and sulfur modified carbon dots (N,S-CDs) from citric acid and cysteine. Both as-prepared carbon dots achieve naked-eye observable blue-green luminescence. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) are used to exhibit the chemical composition of carbon dots. The structure and size of both carbon dots are similar via transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS), which indicates that the function of size effect can be neglected in this study. Fluorescence properties, UV-vis absorption and solubility are systemically studied to investigate the influence of surface modification. The N,S-CDs show high quantum yield and excitation independent photoluminescence, however, the O-CDs present low quantum yield and excitation dependent photoluminescence, and both carbon dots achieve strong photo-stability. The cytotoxicity of carbon dots is also performed on U87-MG brain tumor cells, which shows that both carbon dots process good biocompatibility and low toxicity in live cell. The bright cellular imaging photos indicate that both carbon dots have great potential to serve as high quality optical imaging probes.

Cu2+-doped ZnSe quantum dots (ZnSe:Cu) were prepared via a green and simple route, namely the chemical coprecipitation method. Under 365 nm UV excitation, green emission is observed. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) shows that ZnSe:Cu nanoparticle is cubic zinc blende structure; the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) exhibits that the average diameter of ZnSe:Cu nanocrystals is less than 10 nm. UV-vis spectrophotometer and fluorescence spectrophotometer indicate that ZnSe:Cu nanocrystals have good fluorescence effects.

Soap-free Cationic polystyrene microspheres were prepared by emulsion polymerization using a water soluble monomer Methacrylatoethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (MADAC). Experimental studies were performed in detail to check the effect of the synthesis process of the microspheres, the MADAC dosage, and initiator dosage on the particle size and distribution. The chemical structure of latex particles was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The micro-morphology of latex particles were observed by Transmission electron microscope. The results show that different particle sizes of polystyrene microspheres with good monodispersity were finally obtained by seeded semi-continuous emulsion polymerization.

Aim: To explore the antihyperuricemia and anti-gouty arthritis activities of Aurantii fructus immaturus carbonisata-derived carbon dots (AFIC-CDs). Materials & methods: The AFIC-CDs were characterized using transmission electron microscopy; high-resolution transmission electron microscopy; ultraviolet, fluorescence, Fourier-transform infrared and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy; high-performance liquid chromatography; and x-ray diffraction. Antihyperuricemia and anti-gouty arthritis activities of AFIC-CDs were explored in vivo and in vitro. Results: The AFIC-CDs diameter ranged from 1.1 to 4.4 nm, with a yield of 7.2%. AFIC-CDs reduced serum uric acid by inhibiting xanthine oxidase activity in hyperuricemia rats and inhibited xanthine oxidase activity in vitro. AFIC-CDs improved gouty arthritis induced by monosodium urate crystals in vivo and in vitro. Conclusion: AFIC-CDs may be a potential treatment for gout.
