As one of the excellent decorative materials ceramic tiles must be ground and polished to present the glossy surface. In this paper the ceramic tiles were edge ground by diamond cup wheels in the special designed test machine. The surface morphology of the polished ceramic tiles and the wear of diamond cup wheel were examined by Scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The wear resistance of diamond cup wheel and the materials’ removal process of ceramic tiles had been tested. The results showed that the wear of diamond cup wheel was stable when grinding with high grinding ratio. The ground surface showed that only the fracture of ceramic tiles was acted by diamond grits during grinding with water by means of good quality diamond cup wheel.

As one of the excellent decorative materials, ceramic tiles must be ground and polished to present the glossy surface. Diamond cup wheel is one of important tools. Ceramic tiles were ground by diamond cup wheel with a special designed test machine. The materials’ removal process of ceramic tiles had been tested, and surface roughness was measured. The surface micromorphology of the polished ceramic tiles under different depth of grinding and feed speed was examined by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The results showed that a lot of materials’ removal can be obtained by increasing the depth of grinding and feed speed in rough process of ceramic tile. On the contrary, good surface can be obtained by reducing depth of grinding and feed speed in fine process of ceramic tile.

The incorporation of a granite waste into a vitrified ceramic tile body was investigated. The granite waste came from an industry of stone sawing operations located in the municipal area of Santo Antônio de Pádua, State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The investigated compositions were elaborated substituting partially and totally the feldspar by the granite waste. Cylindrical specimen were prepared by uniaxial pressure at 30 MPa and then fired at temperatures varying from 1050 to 1200oC. Fired properties such as bulk density, linear shrinkage, water absorption and diametrical compression were determined. The microstructure of fired samples was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that the replacement of feldspar by granite waste promoted a better vitrification, decreasing the open porosity and increasing the mechanical strength.

In this research we have isolated and characterized natural bentonite into montmorillonite nanoparticles. Surface microgrinding of the nanostructured WC/12Co coatings have been undertaken with diamond wheels under various conditions. Nondestructive and destructive approaches were utilized to assess damage in ground nanostructured coatings. Different surface and subsurface configurations were observed by scanning electron microscopy. This paper investigates the effects of microgrinding conditions on damage formation in the surface and subsurface layers of the ground nanostructured WC/12Co coatings. And the material-removal mechanism has been discussed.

Polybutyl acrylate (PBA) grafted alumina nanoparticles were synthesized. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) nanocomposites reinforced with PBA grafted nanoparticles were prepared by compression molding. The effects of PBA grafted nanoparticles on the tribological behavior of the PTFE nanocomposites were investigated on a tribometer. The abrasion mechanisms of the PTFE nanocomposites were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of the abraded surfaces. The results show that the addition of PBA grafted nanoparticles maintains low friction coefficient and improves the wear resistance of the PTFE nanocomposites.

A novel and inexpensive bucky gel electrode has been investigated for use as the electrode substrate for deposition of polypyrrole. The electroactive polymer membrane was successfully deposited and the surface morphology studied using scanning electron microscopy. Given the properties of the bucky gel electrode and its ability to conduct ions, this work establishes the first step towards a semi-solid ion-gating system to be used in further applications.

In this study, the boronized layers were formed on the surfaces of specimens with a composition of Fe-2 wt. % Cu-0.4 wt. % C by sintering and boronizing simultaneously, using a pack boronizing method. The processes were performed in the temperature range of 1050 - 1150 oC at a holding time of 4 hours in 97 % N2 and 3 % H2 atmosphere. Scanning electron microscopy examinations showed that the boronized layers formed on the surface of boronized and sintered specimens have a denticular morphology. The thicknesses of the boronized layers varied from 63 to 208 ?m depending on the processing temperature. The structures of the boronized layers were Fe2B and FeB confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis. The microhardness values of boronized layers ranged from 1360 to 2066 HV0.3 much higher than that of substrate hardness which was about 186 HV0.3. Wear testing results showed that the wear resistance of the boronized and sintered specimens was significantly improved, resulting from increased surface microhardness.

In this study, 45 carbon steel was boronized and borosulphurized at 950°C for 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8 h, respectively. The samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, optical microscope, microhardness tester and ring-on-block wear tester. It is found that the surface of borosulphurized samples was dense, compact and relatively smooth; Although the boride layers produced by boro- sulphurizing at 950°C showed a lower microhardness value compared with that produced by boronizing, the wear resistance of the borosulphurized carbon steel is higher than that of boronized sample due to formation of FeS phase in the boride layer.
