A practice for analyzing some raw data from fatigue crack growth tests, carried out on specimens obtained from a railway component (wheel), is presented. Despite the data sample is small, it allows to identify the material parameters of the “threshold” propagation model that make this latter amazingly realistic for the examined material. The proposed analysis method is based on the Evolutionary Algorithms theory and uses raw data obtained from C(T) specimens instrumented with crack gauges.

Fatigue crack growth (FCG) rates have traditionally been formulated from fracture mechanics, whereas fatigue crack initiation has been empirically described using stress-life or strain-life methods. More recently, there has been efforts towards the use of the local stress-strain and similitude concepts to formulate fatigue crack growth rates. A new model has been developed which derives stress-life, strain-life and fatigue crack growth rates from strain energy density concepts. This new model has the advantage to predict an intrinsic stress ratio effect of the form ?ar=(?amp)?·(?max )(1-?), which is dependent on the cyclic stress-strain behaviour of the material. This new fatigue crack propagation model was proposed by Huffman based on Walkerlike strain-life relation. This model is applied to FCG data available for the P355NL1 pressure vessel steel. A comparison of the experimental results and the Huffman crack propagation model is made.

Fatigue crack propagation was modeled by using the cyclic plasticity material properties and fatigue constants for crack initiation. The cyclic elastic-plastic stress-strain field near the crack tip was analyzed using the finite element method with the implementation of a robust cyclic plasticity theory. An incremental multiaxial fatigue criterion was employed to determine the fatigue damage. A straightforward method was developed to determine the fatigue crack growth rate. Crack propagation behavior of a material was obtained without any additional assumptions or fitting. Benchmark Mode I fatigue crack growth experiments were conducted using 1070 steel at room temperature. The approach developed was able to quantitatively capture all the important fatigue crack propagation behaviors including the overload and the R-ratio effects on crack propagation and threshold. The models provide a new perspective for the R-ratio effects. The results support the notion that the fatigue crack initiation and propagation behaviors are governed by the same fatigue damage mechanisms. Crack growth can be treated as a process of continuous crack nucleation.

Pressure vessels and piping are commonly subjected to plastic deformation during manufacturing or installation. This pre-deformation history, usually called pre-strain, may have a significant influence on the resistance against fatigue crack growth of the material. Several studies have been performed to investigate the pre-strain effects on the pure mode I fatigue crack propagation, but less on mixed-mode (I+II) fatigue crack propagation conditions. The present study aims at investigating the effect of tensile plastic pre-strain on fatigue crack growth behavior (da/dN vs. ΔK) of the P355NL1 pressure vessel steel. For that purpose, fatigue crack propagation tests were conducted on specimens with two distinct degrees of pre-strain: 0% and 6%, under mixed mode (I+II) conditions using CTS specimens. Moreover, for comparison purposes, CT specimens were tested under pure mode I conditions for pre-strains of 0% and 3%. Contrary to the majority of previous studies, that applied plastic deformation directly on the machined specimen, in this work the pre-straining operation was carried out prior to the machining of the specimens with the objective to minimize residual stress effects and distortions. Results revealed that, for the P355NL1 steel, the tensile pre-strain increased fatigue crack initiation angle and reduced fatigue crack growth rates in the Paris region for mixed mode conditions. The pre-straining procedure had a clear impact on the Paris law constants, increasing the coefficient and decreasing the exponent. In the low ΔK region, results indicate that pre-strain causes a decrease in ΔKth.

Autofrettage is used to known as an effective method to prevent fatigue crack propagation of thick-walled cylinder vessels operating under high pressure. Since low-alloy steel shows an enhanced crack growth rate in high-pressure gaseous hydrogen, this paper aims to validate the effect of autofrettage on crack growth behavior in high-pressure gaseous hydrogen utilizing 4%NiCrMoV steel (SA723 Gr3 Class2). An autofrettaged cylindrical specimen with a 70mm inside diameter and 111mm outside diameter was prepared with an axial EDM (depth of 1mm) notched on the inside surface. The measured residual stress profile coincides well with the calculated results. The fatigue crack growth test was conducted by pressurizing the cylinder and varying the external water pressure. Crack propagation from the EDM notch was observed in the non-autofrettaged cylindrical specimen while no crack propagation was observed when the initial EDM notch size was within the compressive residual stress field. When the initial EDM notch size was increased, the fatigue crack growth showed a narrow, groove-like fracture surface for the autofrettaged specimen. In order to qualitatively analyze those results, fatigue crack growth rates were examined under various load ratios including a negative load ratio using a fracture mechanics specimen. From the information obtained, crack growth analysis of an autofrettaged cylinder in a high-pressure hydrogen environment was successfully demonstrated with a fracture mechanics approach.

Fatigue crack propagation is one of the main problems in structural health monitoring. For the safety and operability of the metal structure, it is necessary to monitor the fatigue crack growth process of the structure in real time. In order to more accurately monitor the expansion of fatigue cracks, two kinds of sensors are used in this article: strain gauges and piezoelectric transducers. A model-based inverse finite element model algorithm is proposed to perform pattern recognition of fatigue crack length, and the fatigue crack monitoring experiment is carried out to verify the algorithm. The strain spectra of the specimen under cyclic load in the simulation and experimental crack propagation are obtained, respectively. The active lamb wave technique is also used to monitor the crack propagation. The relationship between the crack length and the lamb wave characteristic parameter is established. In order to improve the recognition accuracy of the crack propagation mode, the random forest and inverse finite element model algorithms are used to identify the crack length, and the Dempster–Shafer evidence theory is used as data fusion to integrate the conclusion of the two algorithms to make a more accountable and correct judge of the crack length. An experiment has been conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the method.

The objective of the paper is to present the newest results of our complex research work. In order to determination and comparison of the fatigue resistance, fatigue crack growth tests were performed on different grades of S690QL quenched and tempered, and S960TM thermomechanically rolled high strength steels.15 mmand30 mmthick base materials were used for our investigations. Welded joints were made from these base materials, using gas metal arc welding with matching, overmatching, and undermatching filler metals. In the paper, the performance of the welding experiments will be presented, especially with the difficulties of the filler material selection; along with the results of the fatigue crack growth examinations executed on the base materials and its welded joints. Statistical aspects were applied both for the presenting of the possible locations of the cracks in the base materials and the welded joints and for the processing of the measured data. Furthermore, the results will be compared with each other, and the possibility of derivation of fatigue crack propagation limit curves will be referred.

A new approach for the simulation of fatigue crack growth in welded joint has been developed and the concept has been applied to welded cruciform and curve T-joints. The phenomena of crack propagation and interface debonding can be regarded as the formation of new surface. Thus, it is possible to model these problems by introducing the mechanism of surface formation. In the proposed method, the formation of new surface is represented by interface element based on the interface potential energy. The properties of this interface element represent the bonding strength of the material. As the cyclic load continues, the bonding strength decreases between the interacting surfaces and the crack propagates slowly. Based on this concept, an ANSYS code has been written for the simulation of crack propagation. Using this code, fatigue crack growth rate and fatigue crack propagation life of 2-D FEM models of welded cruciform and curve T-joints for different stress/load ratios have been analyzed and presented in this paper. The method is relatively simple compared to other conventional FEM method and save computer time significantly. The predicted results are compared with experimental results and good agreement has been achieved.

The fatigue crack propagation behaviors of an Al-Cu-Mg alloy are investigated in different environments and with varying stress ratios. Fatigue experiments are carried out via a fatigue crack growth rate test in laboratory air, a 3.5% (mass fraction) NaCl solution and a tank seeper. The results show that a corrosion environment has an obvious influence on the fatigue crack growth rate, and the degrees of influence of the two different corrosive environments are basically identical. When the stress ratio is R = 0.5 and 0.06 with a decrease of the stress intensity factor, the difference in the crack propagation rates for the corrosion and air environments gradually increases. However, the corrosion acceleration in each stage of crack propagation is obvious while R=−1.
