This paper presents a diagnostic campaign carried out in an old church located in the historic center of Bologna. The campaign's objective is to evaluate the mechanical properties, the texture, the defects, and the state of preservation of the masonry. In addition, the campaign aims to assess the state of the crack pattern and monitor its changes over time. To achieve these aims several non-destructive methods and sensors have been used for structural health monitoring.

Richard Bushman’s 2005 biography of Joseph Smith incorporated the findings of the New Mormon history. Bushman saw changes over time in Smith’s vision accounts and granted the critics that point, just not their interpretation that it meant Smith did not experience what he claimed. Bushman did not question whether Smith told the truth about his vision, only what truth he told he time he recorded it. Bushman’s Joseph Smith is therefore not the deceived or deceiving one of Fawn Brodie or Wesley Walters, but neither is he the simplified teenage prophet of the movies and manuals. Though initially barred from use in LDS religious education curriculum, provided the standard interpretation of Smith’s first vision adopted by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by 2018. This was most evident in “First Vision Accounts” and Saints: The Standard of Truth, volume 1—products espoused and promoted by LDS leaders.

Mode errors are one kind of breakdown in human-computer interaction. The concept was developed originally in the context of relatively simple reactive computerized devices such as word processors. When a device possesses multiple modes, where something is done one way in one mode and another way in another mode, there is increased potential for erroneous actions. In this paper we extend and expand the concept of mode error to supervisory control of automated resources in event-driven situations such as pilot interaction with cockpit automation. In this type of situation, the state of the automated system can change in response to either operator input, situation factors or system factors. This creates complexities in tracking system mode changes over time, surprises created by “uncommanded” mode changes, and the possibility of errors of omission as well as commission in managing multiple system modes. Progress in our understanding of mode error in the context of highly automated systems is important in our ability to develop effective countermeasures for mode-related problems in human-computer cooperation.

In the present article, an investigation carried out to diagnose the state of deterioration of a reticular type slab, located in the Historic Center of Oaxaca city Mexico, using non-destructive (TND) and semi-destructive (TSD) techniques, is described. The roof was built with an unconventional structural system, which consisted of the use of reticular beams, missing hollow block cases and a compression slab. During the visual inspection, various signs of deterioration in the structure were observed, such as: leaks, salt leaching, shedding of the rebar cover and corrosion of the reinforcing steel. Accordingly, the TND and TSD selected to perform the diagnosis of the state of deterioration of the structure were the following: estimation of the compressive strength (f´c), by means of sclerometry test and compression test in concrete cores, determination of the effects of salts leaching on the pH of the concrete, estimation of the amount and location of the reinforcing steel with a digital pacometer and estimation of the corrosion state in selected rebars by electrochemical testing. The results obtained revealed the feasibility of using NDT and SDT to reliably diagnose the state of deterioration of a reticular slab of reinforced concrete in a non-invasive manner.

In this paper we analyze the concepts of fenxiang and gongxiang—the Mandarin words for ‘sharing’—in the context of Chinese social media. Drawing on earlier work on ‘sharing’, and based on analyses of four corpuses and changes over time to the homepages of 32 Chinese social network sites (accessed through the Wayback Machine), we find that the concepts of fenxiang and gongxiang offer a heuristic for understanding Chinese social media, while also pointing to an important facet of the discursive construction of Chinese social media. Although seeming to refer to the same activities as ‘sharing’, analysis of the language of fenxiang and gongxiang in Chinese social media reveals the entanglement of a new individualistic self with a self that remains socially embedded in pre-existing relationships; it shows how micro-level harmony (fenxiang) and macro-level harmony (gongxiang) cohere with each other; while also reflecting the interplay among social media platforms, users, and the state.

The paper describes non-destructive methods for determining the physical and mechanical properties of metals based on the regularities of elastic-plastic indentation of a spherical indenter into the test material. Using the proposed methods makes it possible to construct a diagram of true tensile stresses based on the results of a single indentation of a spherical indenter.

Hobbes’s views on church–state relations go well beyond Erastianism. Rather than claiming that the state holds supremacy over the church, Hobbes argued that church and state are identical in Christian commonwealths. This chapter shows that Hobbes advanced two distinct arguments for the church–state identity thesis over time. Both arguments are of considerable interest. The argument found in De Cive explains how the sovereign unifies a multitude of Christians into one personified church—without, intriguingly, any appeal to representation. Leviathan’s argument is premised on the sovereign’s authorized representation of Christian subjects. Authorization explains why, from Leviathan onwards, full sacerdotal powers are ex officio attributed to the sovereign. In Hobbes’s mature theory, every clerical power, including baptism and consecration, derives from the sovereign—now labelled ‘the Supreme Pastor’. Developments in Hobbes’s account of church personation thus explain Leviathan’s theocratic turn.
