Quench propagation velocity is an important parameter to the stability and protection issues of superconducting magnet. In this paper, the finite element method (FEM) numerical simulation of quench propagation velocity has been performed for using the powerful analysis software COSMOS by establishing a suitable thermal analysis model of Bi-2223/Ag superconducting multifilamentary tape. The effects of quench energy and operating temperature on the quench propagation velocity have been studied. The analysis shows that the simulation result basically coincides with the experimental result.

The effects of progressive failure on flood embankments with underlying thin layers of soft, sensitive soils are investigated. Finite element analysis allows for investigation of strain-softening effects and progressive failure in soft and sensitive soils. However, limit equilibrium methods for slope stability analysis, widely used in industry, cannot capture these effects and may result in unconservative factors of safety. A parametric analysis was conducted to investigate the effect of thin layers of soft sensitive soils on the stability of flood embankments. A flood embankment was modeled using both the limit equilibrium method and the finite element method. The foundation profile was altered to determine the extent to which varying soft and sensitive soils affected the stability of the embankment, with respect to progressive failure. The results from the two methods were compared to determine reduction factors that can be applied towards factors of safety computed using limit equilibrium methods, in order to capture progressive failure.

The vice frame bears and transfers the forces and loads between the bogie and the vehicle body. The strength of the vice frame relates directly to the stability and smoothness of the vehicle. In this study, finite element analysis is utilized first to analyse the structural strength and fatigue life of the vice frame, and the recognize the weak parts of its structure in order to enhance its structural strength in the following design work. The finite element analysis is performed on a simulation software Ansys. Then an experiment is designed to test the fatigue strength of the vice frame. The experimental result indicates that the fatigue strength of the object corresponds to the standards and the finite element analysis has high feasibility in solving this kind of problem.

This paper describes a finite element structural analysis model and determines analysis methods appropriate for determining the stability of the mast of a crane. This analysis model allows various analysis approaches to be applied to the conditions affecting the construction of a large gantry crane in order to ensure the stability of the mast of the crane. The finite element method is used as a way to construct an analytical model that can help ensure the stability of the mast in two stages. The model is used in a two-stage analytical process that takes into account the conditions of the model. In this way, the model can be used to judge the stability of the mast. By allowing variation in the analysis approach used for the crane mast, the analysis model may be changed if the conditions of the one-girder gantry crane require. Designers may apply this method for the active analysis of the stability of a crane mast.

This paper presents the results of a study on a joint slope deformation affecting the western slope of the GuangYang highway (YangQuan, China). Fieldwork identified the ongoing deformational process and assisted in defining its mechanisms, evolution and controlling factors. Here we discuss how to use limit equilibrium methods to calculate the behavior of slopes and to use the finite element analysis to evaluate the stability, displacements of slopes and soil-slope stabilization interaction. The finite element method with shear strength reduction (SSR) technique is explained in Phase2D. This method is effective for the prediction of the stability of slope. Based on numerical comparisons between the limit equilibrium methods and finite element method, it is suggested that the finite element method with SSR technique is a reliable and maybe unique approach to evaluate the slope stability. The paper also took into account effectiveness of the large rain and seismic load. The results of the numerical analysis are consistent with the observed slope surface evidence.

In order to study the effect of blast shake on the stability of tunnel during mining process, finite element analysis software for rock and soil engineering is used to simulate the effect of blasting shake. In the simulation, a short-time dynamic load is applied to the rock in the blasting zone. Dynamic stress field in the rock mass and distortion in the surface of the tunnel are calculated with the finite-element method. Equivalent displacement method is utilized to determine the amount of sudden applied load, the actuation duration and the range of action. Consequently, the maximum critical explosive content at the critical shake speed of rock mass can be defined.

Based on the experimental study of its constitutive relations, uses the ABAQUS finite element analysis software to simulation analyzes the three-dimensional static property of one type of polyurethane vibration isolators. The numerical analysis and experimental result demonstrate that the material constitutive model built by this method can describe the three-dimensional static mechanical property of the polyurethane isolator accurately. This method provides certain reference value for establishment of the constitutive relations of other types of polyurethane isolator.

The special type of C-hook is investigated in this paper. The C-hook is designed to carry a special load, where is not possible to use classical hooks or chain slings. The designed hook is consisted of two arms that ensure the stability of the load being carried. The finite element analysis is performed for the control of the stress and deformation state in the whole hook. The fatigue analysis is performed for the check of a lifetime of C-hook.

This paper used the finite element method to compare the mechanical properties of two different configuration counterweight booms of the bucket wheel stacker reclaimer. And two different forms of the finite element analysis model of the counterweight booms were built in ANSYS. The stresses and strains under its working state were calculated. Then the impact of the counterweight arm to the force and stability of the whole rack could be analyzed. The results of this analysis provided a basis to select different types of the counterweight booms in different environment, and it has an important guidance and reference significance to the design and analysis of counterweight booms of large-scale machinery.

Bone drilling is a standard procedure in medicine mainly for internal fixation with a gripper plate. Drilling bone generates much heat, then the heat causes the temperature of bone to rise, nearby the borehole rapidly, while drilling. Studies indicated that the bone would irreversibly be damaged after being heated up to 47°C for 60 s. Hence, it is vitally important to control the drilling temperature of bone. Two different models of the tibia for drilling simulation were established with ABAQUS software based on finite element analysis in this article. The first model is an approximate ideal model of the tibia with fluid in the bone cavity. And the other one is a tubular tibia without fluid in the bone cavity, and a pair of thermocouples is embedded to match the experimental condition when measuring the drilling temperature. The distribution of heat on the bone and the highest drilling temperature were revealed by simulation, and the influences of drilling parameters on drilling temperature of bone were also explored by variance analysis. The results show that the maximum drilling temperature increases with an increase in the diameter of bit and spindle speed. The drilling temperature also increases as the feed rate increase, but the effect of feed rate on drilling temperature is not as significant as that of spindle speed. The drilling temperatures of two models were obtained by the finite element method. The maximum temperature of model 1 is taken as the benchmark. The temperature of model 2 takes as the experimental result. A formula for modifying the experimental temperature to actual value was derived. Then predicted temperature of model 1 could be achieved to obtain the optimized drilling parameters.
