The use of hybrid composite materials has increased due to their special mechanical and physical properties. However, machining of these materials is extremely difficult due to non-homogeneous, anisotropic and highly abrasive characteristics. The performance of machined surface quality of CFRP/Al2024 was described using two level factorial methodology. This research aims to study the interaction effects and significant factors of cutting parameters on the surface quality and optimise the cutting parameter for the surface quality of CFRP/Al2024 1μm to 2μm. The trimming process test was performed under dry conditions using burr tools 6mm diameter of end mills. The factors investigated were spindle speed (N), feed rate (fr) and depth of cut (dc), meanwhile profile roughness parameters (Ra) of CFRP and Al2024 were the response variables. Results show that the best estimated value of fr should be 500 mm/min to 530 mm/min, N is between and 2313.870 rpm to 2336.042 rpm. For both responses, N is the most significant effect followed by fr and dc.

This paper presents the use of vibration analysis based on autoregressive (AR) trispectrum in milling process to indicate the relationship between machined surface quality of workpiece and spectrum character under a variety of different cutting parameter settings, such as the depth of cut, the feed rate and the spindle speed. The metal cutting experiments were performed on steel A3 material without using any cutting fluid. The experimental results for slices analysis of trispectra indicated that the spectral peaks were abundant as the milling process went smoothly. The roughness value measured reflects the machined surface quality of workpice. According to the changes for spectral peak and roughness value, a conclusion was made that the proposed trispectrum slices method for choosing cutting parameters and monitoring the machined surface quality in milling process was practicable.

Acquiring the desired surface quality is one of the major efforts in machining of materials. Milling operation is a widely used machining operation to shape the material in different forms. Machining parameters and conditions are two major factors that affect the surface quality of machined workpiece in milling operation. In this paper, we analyze the surface finish of machined workpiece under the variations of machining parameters and conditions (wet and dry conditions) in milling operation. For our analysis, we use fractal dimension as the indicator of complexity of structure. Based on the obtained results, in the case of wet machining condition, by increasing the depth of cut, feed rate and spindle speed in separate experiments, the fractal dimension of machined surface increases. However, the obtained results in the case of dry machining condition are not consistent with the variations of different machining parameters. The obtained results will be discussed in terms of complex structure of machined surface. The method of analysis employed in this research can be investigated with other machining operations to check how the machining parameters and conditions affect the surface quality of machined surface.

For its good processing flexible, economic and environmental protection performance, hardened steel GCr15 is used widely in car and energy industry. Although surface quality in machining process is not controlled well, that restricts application of hardened steel GCr15 extensive to a certain degree. Therefore, this study revealed the effect of cutting parameters on surface roughness. Also influence of cutting conditions on surface morphology and organization generation mechanism of subsurface were stuied for high-speed cutting hardened steel GCr15. Appear reasons of plastic side flow on surface was researched. Also, effect of tool wear on surface quality was studied as well. The research results provided theoretical basis for rational choice for high speed hardened steel cutting process.

Shape memory alloys (SMAs) are now widely used in many industrial and engineering applications e.g. in aircrafts, space vehicles, robotics and actuators. However the available literature reveals that little or no work is published on the machinability of these alloys. In this paper, the effect of the main cutting parameters namely: cutting speed, depth of cut and feed rate on the surface quality of the machined surface of the Cu-Zn-Al shape memory alloy both in the cast and after direct extrusion using a CNC milling is investigated. The cutting speed was varied from 750 to 2000 rpm , the depth of cut was varied from 1 to 4 mm and the feed rate was varied from 100 to 250 mm/min. Furthermore, the general microstructure, the mechanical behavior and hardness of the Cu-Zn-Al shape memory alloy both in the cast and after direct extrusion are determined and discussed. It was found that the best achieved surface quality in this SMA, machined within the different investigated cutting conditions is 0.13 microns at cutting speed of 750 rpm, 1 mm depth of cut and 150 mm/min. feed rate, which is better than the surface quality achieved in other materials at the same cutting conditions.

The benefit of pre-sintered machining is to avoid machining difficulty of sintered parts especially hardenable PM steels. Pre-sintering treatments of green PM part at temperatures lower than the normal sintering temperature of 1120 °C result in green strength improvement high enough for machining. In this study, the influences of various pre-sintering temperatures and several machining conditions on machined surface quality of pre-sintered PM samples were investigated. The pre-sintered samples were machined by a turning process using a carbide cutting insert with varied cutting speeds at a fixed feed rate and depth of cut without cutting lubricant. Chromium alloyed PM steel (Astaloy® CrM) powder samples with (0.5 wt. %C) and without graphite (0 wt. % C) additions mixed with 1 wt. % of zinc stearate were prepared as green parts by cold compaction in a cylindrical die with diameter of 30 mm. Green density was about 7.00 g/cm3 and height of each sample was controlled by hydraulic pressure and powder weight of 80 g/sample. The green samples were treated by pre-sintering treatment before machining testing. Surface quality of each machined sample was evaluated by average surface roughness and surface texture by SEM analysis and the appearance of outlet edge breakout. The experimental results revealed that the pre-sintered samples with graphite addition showed better surface quality in terms of surface roughness and surface texture and small outlet edge breakout appearance. Moreover, at high pre-sintering temperatures of 900 and 1,000°C, the samples showed similar average surface roughness under the same turning conditions. The obtained surface textures were better than those of the samples pre-sintered at 700 and 800°C. The outlet edge breakout could not be found in the graphite-added samples pre-sintering at 1,000°C.

Analysis of surface quality of machined workpiece is an important issue in machining of materials. For this purpose, scientists analyze how the texture of machined surface changes due to different conditions. Machine vibration is one of the factors that highly affects the surface quality of machined surface. In this research, we analyze the relation between machine vibration and surface quality of machined workpiece. For this purpose, we employ fractal theory and analyze how the complex structure of machined surface changes with the complex structure of machine vibration signal in case of variations of machining parameters, namely, depth of cut, feed rate and spindle speed, in milling operation. Based on the results, variations of surface quality of machined workpiece are related with the variations of complexity of machine vibration signal. The method of analysis employed in this research can be applied to other machining operations in order to find the relation between machine vibration and surface quality of machined workpiece.

Analysis of the machined surface is one of the major issues in machining operations. On the other hand, investigating about the variations of cutting forces in machining operation has great importance. Since variations of cutting forces affect the surface quality of machined workpiece, therefore, analysis of the correlation between cutting forces and surface roughness of machined workpiece is very important. In this paper, we employ fractal analysis in order to investigate about the complex structure of cutting forces and relate them to the surface quality of machined workpiece. The experiments have been conducted in different conditions that were selected based on cutting depths, type of cutting tool (serrated versus. square end mills) and machining conditions (wet and dry machining). The result of analysis showed that among all comparisons, we could only see the correlation between complex structure of cutting force and the surface roughness of machined workpiece in case of using serrated end mill in wet machining condition. The employed methodology in this research can be widely applied to other types of machining operations to analyze the effect of variations of different parameters on variability of cutting forces and surface roughness of machined workpiece and then investigate about their correlation.
