AbstractThe European Bruchidius ater (Marsh.), first discovered in Massachusetts in 1918, and later in Virginia, is here recorded from Rochester, N.Y. In addition to Cytisus scoparius (L.) Link, its known host in the United States, the insect was reared from seeds of Petteria ramentacea (Sieber) Presl and Laburnum alpinum Bercht. and Presl at the New York locality. All three plants are introductions from Europe. Bruchidius unicolor (Ol.) was recognized in 1965 when it was discovered in British Columbia breeding in the seed pods of Onobrychis viciaefolia Scop. A single specimen, collected in Nicola, B.C., in 1922, indicates that the insect has been present in southwestern Canada for a considerable time.

Eleven of the 13 North American species of Xeromphalina are reported from Canada. A key to 14 North American and northern Eurasian species is given. Type specimens for 9 names were examined. In Canada, subgenus Heimiomyces is represented by two species: X. tenuipes (Schw.) Smith (sect. Heimiomyces) and X. fulvipes (Murr.) Smith (sect. Fulvipes). Subgenus Xeromphalina is represented by sections Xeromphalina and Mutabiles. Xeromphalina brunneola Miller and X. campanella (Batsch: Fr.) Kuhner & Maire are circumboreal species documented from across Canada. Xeromphalina kauffmanii Smith occurs in southern Quebec, Nova Scotia, Costa Rica, the eastern United States, and in Japan. Section Mutabiles stat.nov. is completely revised based on pigmentation of the pileipellis, on the distribution and types of pileocystidia, and on the pigmentation of the stipe, in addition to characters used previously in the genus. The term "circumcystidia" is coined for pileocystidia largely confined to a band around the pileus margin. In North America, the name X. cauticinalis (Fr.) Kühner & Maire frequently has been misapplied to X. cornui (Quél.) Favre, a common, widespread species in Canada. Xeromphalina fraxinophila Smith is reported from across Canada and the United States and in Eurasia. The name Marasmius cauticinalis is neotypified. In North America X. cauticinalis ssp. cauticinalis occurs in western areas. Xeromphalina cauticinalis ssp. pubescentipes (Peck) comb. et stat. nov. occurs in eastern areas in North America, in Japan, and together with ssp. cauticinalis in Europe. Xeromphalina parvibulbosa (Kauff. & Smith) comb.nov. occurs across North America. Xeromphalina cirris sp.nov. from montane or boreal coniferous forests floors in British Columbia, Ontario, Colorado, Idaho, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming and X. campanelloides sp.nov. from coastal British Columbia and Washington, and eastern montane New York and Quebec, on coniferous logs, are described. Rhizomorphs are formed by all Canadian species except X. tenuipes.

Using evidence drawn from S. de Ricci and W. J. Wilson’s Census of Medieval and Renaissance Manuscripts in the United States and Canada, American auction records, private library catalogues, public exhibition catalogues, and manuscript fragments surviving in American institutional libraries, this article documents nineteenth-century collections of medieval and Renaissance manuscript fragments in North America before ca. 1900. Surprisingly few fragments can be identified, and most of the private collections have disappeared. The manuscript constituents are found in multiple private libraries, two universities (New York University and Cornell University), and one Learned Society (Massachusetts Historical Society). The fragment collections reflect the collecting genres documented in England in the same period, including albums of discrete fragments, grangerized books, and individual miniatures or “cuttings” (sometimes framed). A distinction is drawn between undecorated text fragments and illuminated ones, explained by aesthetic and scholarly collecting motivations. An interest in text fragments, often from binding waste, can be documented from the 1880s.

Results from 17 pollen collecting stations in British Columbia indicate that air-borne pollen of ragweeds and their relatives, the principal causative agents of hay fever in North America, is practically absent throughout the province. Coniferous trees and shrubs such as pines, spruces, firs, cedars, Douglas fir, hemlocks and junipers produce the greater part of the air-borne pollen from March to early July. Pollen from alders, poplars, willows and birches is also prevalent in some areas in the early spring. The peak periods of grass pollen near the United States–Canadian border occur mainly in June and the early part of July, while further north they are about a month later. Of the four types of plantain pollen identified from the different collecting stations, English plantain was the most common, especially in the southwesterly part of the province. Pollen from the lambs’-quarters and amaranth families and wormwoods occurs mainly in the late summer and early fall and is more abundant in the dry interior than along the coast.

Metaltella simoni (Keyserling, 1878), an amaurobiid spider species precinctive to Argentina and Uruguay, and probably southern Brazil, is well established in the southeastern coastal regions of the United States (Leech 1972: 107). It was brought to North America by commercial and trade activities, hence the apparent distribution disjunction. The first Nearctic record is 23–30 July 1944, from Harahan, Louisiana (Leech 1972: 107).

Norway maple leaves bearing powdery mildew were collected from one location in the fall of 2003 and four locations (as much as 1.5 km apart) in the fall of 2005 in Buffalo, NY. No powdery mildew was observed on leaves collected from sugar maples (Acer saccharum) that were present in the vicinity of affected Norway maples at two locations. Trees were located along streets and in yards. Diseased leaves were present throughout tree crowns but lower leaves were more commonly affected. White mycelium was present in irregular, discrete, scattered spots only on the upper surface of leaves and on both sides of wings of samaras. Typically, <10% of the upper leaf area bore visible mycelium. Cleistothecia were present singly or in groups on the mycelium. Morphology of cleistothecia on leaves collected each year, including simple and bifid appendages with uncinate to circinate apices, was sufficient to identify the pathogen to the genus Sawadaea (1). Other characteristics were not sufficiently distinct to make an identification of S. bicornis or S. tulasnei (1), each a European species found on Acer spp. However, a sample from 2003 was supplied by the authors for use in a study of phylogeny of the genus (2) that served as a first report of the species in the United States. Analysis of nuclear rDNA ITS sequence of this specimen (GenBank Accession No. AB193390) placed the sample in a clade with S. tulasnei specimens from Europe. In the same study, powdery mildew samples from Acer spp. in Ohio and Montreal, Canada also were placed in this clade. Thus, occurrence of S. tulasnei in North America is confirmed. S. bicornis was recently identified (based on morphology) on Norway maple in the western United States (3).
