AbstractRobsonomyia reducta, new genus and new species, is described from males collected in British Columbia and California. Characters distinguishing it from other genera of Macrocerinae are discussed.

Betapista dekkerae, new genus and new species, is described. The generic diagnoses for Laphania and Scionides are improved after inspection of the holotypes of the type species. Eupolymnia heterobranchia (syn., E. crescentis) is redescribed. Additions to the descriptions, based on study of type material, are made for Laphania boecki (new record, Northeast Pacific), Neoamphitrite robusta (syn., Scionides dux), Neoleprea californica and N. spiralis, Pista brevibrunchiata (new record, British Columbia [B.C.], Washington [WA], Japan) and P. fratrella, and Polycirrus californicus (new record, B.C., WA, syn., P. perplexus). Other additions to the descriptions are provided for Amaeana occidentalis (new record, B.C.) and Pista cristata. Two further Pista species (one from the Skagerrak) and five Polycirrus species are charcterized but not named. Other new records are Lanassa venusta venusta (B.C.), Lysilla loveni, and Neoleprea japonica (the two latter for Northeast Pacific). Lysilla pacifica, Pista fasciata, and P. fratrella are shown not to be members of the fauna of British Columbia and Washington. Presumably, neither is Polycirrus caliendrum. New observations on the types of the Antarctic Polycirrus kerguelensis and Ereutho kerguelensis are noted.Key words: Betapista n.g., Neoleprea, new records, Northeast Pacific, Pista, Polycirrus, Scionides, Terebellidae

AbstractThe new genus Archepandemis, with type-species Parapandemis borealis Freeman, 1965, is described. Two new species, A. coniferana from British Columbia and Alberta and A. morrisana from New Brunswick, are distinguished from A. borealis by characters of maculation and especially of male and female genitalia.

AbstractWe describe three new genera and four new species (three named) of siricomorph sawflies (Hymenoptera: Symphyta) from the Ypresian (early Eocene) Okanagan Highlands: Pamphiliidae,Ulteramus republicensisnew genus, new speciesfrom Republic, Washington, United States of America; Siricidae,Ypresiosirex orthosemosnew genus, new speciesfrom McAbee, British Columbia, Canada; and Cephidae,Cuspilongus cachecreekensisnew genus, new speciesfrom McAbee and another cephid treated as Cephinae species A from Horsefly River, British Columbia, Canada. These are the only currently established occurrences of any siricomorph family in the Ypresian. We treat the undescribed new siricoid from the Cretaceous Crato Formation of Brazil as belonging to the Pseudosiricidae, not Siricidae, and agree with various authors that the YpresianMegapterites mirabilisCockerell is an ant (Hymenoptera: Formicidae). The Miocene speciesCephites oeningensisHeer andC. fragilisHeer, assigned to the Cephidae over a century and a half ago, are also ants. Many of the host plants that siricomporphs feed upon today first appeared in the Eocene, a number of these in the Okanagan Highlands in particular. The Okanagan Highlands sites where these wasps were found also had upper microthermal mean annual temperatures as are overwhelmingly preferred by most modern siricomorphs, but were uncommon in the globally warm Ypresian, only found then in higher elevations and highest latitudes.

The conodont fauna from nine sections across a platform-to-basin transect in northeastern British Columbia includes species of Early Ordovician (Tremadocian) to Early Silurian (Llandovery) age. A collection of 9,110 conodont elements was recovered from 205 samples taken from nine stratigraphic sections that preserve the platform succession of the Kechika, Skoki, Beaverfoot, McCusker and Nonda Formations and their off-shelf equivalents, the Ospika, Robb, Kenny and Laurier Formations of the Road River Group. The fauna is assigned to 106 species representing 67 genera; the Ordovician species are representative of two faunal realms. One new genus, left in open nomenclature, is described. Five new species include Drepanoistodus latus and four new species left in open nomenclature assigned to the following genera: Walliserodus, Multioistodus?, Pseudooneotodus, and Belodina. The Midcontinent Realm zones recognized include, in ascending order, the Acodus kechikaensis, Oepikodus communis, Jumudontus gananda, Tripodus laevis to Plectodina aculeata zones, Phragmodus undatus and Gamachignathus ensifer? zones. Zonal species of the Atlantic Realm are Microzarkodina flabellum, Eoplacognathus suecicus, Baltoniodus variabilis, Pygodus anserinus, and Amorphognathus tvaerensis. The Silurian fauna, of lower diversity than the Ordovician fauna, is representative of the Distomodus staurognathoides and Pterospathodus amorphognathoides zones.

We repeatedly sampled eight sites on the Crooked River in British Columbia’s Arctic watershed for adult and nymph mayflies (Ephemeroptera) over the course of two years. Using taxonomic keys and DNA-barcoding we report eight new species records for the province. These are five Baetidae (Acerpenna pygmaea, Baetis phoebus, Baetis vernus, Iswaeon anoka, and Procloeon pennulatum), one Heptageniidae (Leucrocuta hebe), one Leptohyphidae (Tricorythodes mosegus), and one Siphlonuridae (Siphlonurus alternatus). Three of these – Acerpenna, Iswaeon, and Leucrocuta – are also new genus records for the province. In total we detected 40 species in eight families as indicated by clustering into BINs (Barcode Index Numbers), by morphological keys, and by matches in the Barcode of Life Database. One of those species, Ameletus vernalis, is of conservation concern. Our analysis indicated that a number of other specimens may represent new species or genus records for BC. In addition this unique and anthropogenically impacted river may contain cryptic species of Baetis tricaudatus (Baetidae), Leptophlebia nebulosa (Leptophlebiidae), and Paraleptophlebia debilis (Leptophlebiidae).

AbstractThree new species of Pipunculidae (Diptera) are described (one named), from the early Eocene (Ypresian) Okanagan Highlands of British Columbia, Canada and Washington State, United States of America: Metanephrocerus belgardeaenew species from Republic, Washington; and Pipunculidae species A and Pipunculinae species A from Quilchena, British Columbia. We re-describe the late Eocene (Priabonian) species Protonephrocerus florissantius Carpenter and Hull from Florissant, Colorado, United States of America, and assign it to a new genus proposed here, Priabonanew genus. Pipunculinae species A is the oldest known member of the family whose wing lacks a separated M2 vein; previously this had been known in species only as old as Miocene Dominican amber. This is a presumably derived character state that is predominant in modern species. Molecular analysis indicates an origin of the Pipunculidae in the Maastrichtian; the morphological and taxonomic diversity seen here in the Ypresian is consistent with an early radiation of the family. This is concordant with the radiation of Auchenorrhyncha, upon which they mostly prey, which is in turn associated with the early Paleogene diversification of angiosperm-dominated forests recovering from the K-Pg extinction event.

Morphological and distributional observations on 11 of the 19 ampharetid species and subspecies recorded from British Columbia and Washington are presented. Hobsonia new genus and Sosanopsis hesslei new species are described, and remarks made on the generic diagnosis of Sosanopsis. Amage anops is studied from type material. Ampharete labrops, A. goesi brazhnikovi, Hobsonia florida, and Samytha californiensis are newly recorded for the Oregon biogeographic Province. Ampharete gagarae is shown to be restricted to deep water of the northeast Pacific and adjacent seas.

AbstractStem-group Phasmatodea, known as the Susumanioidea, are previously established from the Jurassic through the Paleocene. Here, we extend this record to the early Eocene with five new fossils: two forewings from the Klondike Mountain Formation exposures at Republic, Washington, United States of America, and three partially complete specimens from the McAbee locality in southern British Columbia, Canada. We assign both of the Republic specimens to the new genus and species Eoprephasma hichensinew genus, new species. Two of the McAbee fossils appear to represent two further new species, which we refer to as Susumanioidea species A and B for lack of clearly preserved diagnostic species-level character states. The third might belong to one of these two species, but this is unclear. In all three, the mesothorax and metathorax are not notably extended, the forewings are not shortened, the foreleg femur is straight, and species A possesses an extended, external ovipositor with an operculum (unknown in the other specimens). These conditions are rare and never found in combination in Euphasmatodea. All other stem-group Phasmatodea younger than the Early Cretaceous of China are only known from isolated wings.

AbstractThe new conodont genusMagnigondolellais recognized based on specimens recovered from the Anisian (Middle Triassic) of British Columbia in Canada, and Nevada in the USA. This new genus encompasses problematic specimens with high carinas, which have recently been collectively referred to asNeogondolellaex gr.regalisMosher. Ten species from North America are herein assigned toMagnigondolellan. gen., including the eight new speciesM.alexanderi,M.cyri,M.julii,M.nebuchadnezzari,M.salomae,M. n. sp. A,M. n. sp. B, andM. n. sp. C, as well as the two existing speciesM.regalis(Mosher) andM.dilacerata(Golding and Orchard). Other species from the Tethys region are also tentatively assigned toMagnigondolellan. gen. Based on published records, the genus appears to range from the Spathian to the upper Anisian in North America. The recognition of eight new species from the Anisian significantly increases the conodont biodiversity of this period, which has previously been regarded as a time of low diversity. Although some of the species included withinMagnigondolellan. sp. have relatively long stratigraphic ranges, many have been identified in both British Columbia and Nevada, and therefore show potential for biostratigraphic correlation on a regional scale.
