REVISION OF THE NEW WORLD CHRYSOLAMPINAE (HYMENOPTERA: CHALCIDOIDEA)

AbstractThe taxonomy and biology of New World species of Chrysolampinae are reviewed with diagnoses given for the subfamily, genera, and species. A key to the species of Chrysolampus and a summary of geographic distribution and information on host and floral associations are presented. Three new species are described from North America (Chrysolampus improcerus, C. luridus and C. elegans); Chrysolampus lycti Crawford is transferred to Perilampus and synonymized with the European species P. micans Dalman. The genus Chrysomalla is recorded in the New World for the first time based on the new species Chrysomalla hesperis. An explanation of the historical biogeography of the genera is proposed that is consistent with Late Cretaceous and Tertiary geological, botanical, and climatic information. It is suggested that the extant species are descendents of elements of a widely distributed arid biota.

Ochrotrichia, with about 160 extant species in the New World, is the most diverse genus assigned to the Ochrotrichiinae. Despite its diversity, only eight species were previously recorded from Brazil, only one from Rio de Janeiro state. In this paper, we describe three new species from Parque Nacional da Tijuca, an Atlantic Forest area at Rio de Janeiro. Ochrotrichia nematomorpha sp. nov. is placed within the O. xena Group, having a plate-like tergum X, with an unusual phallus which is slender and pointed apically. Ochrotrichia sagitta sp. nov. and O. taunay sp. nov. belong to the O. aldama Group, each having a divided tergum X, but being distinguished from the others in this group by the arrowhead-like apex of left lateral process of tergum X (O. sagitta) and the presence of two dorsal spine-like projections on tergum X (O. taunay). Furthermore, O. caatinga Souza, Santos & Takiya, 2014 is reported for the first time from Rio de Janeiro state.

AbstractThe genus Synosis Townes, 1959 (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae: Metopiinae) currently comprises 18 described species. A redescription of the genus is presented and three new species are described and illustrated: S. diaguita new species, S. nigra new species, and S. zezei new species. Two previously known species, Synosis rubinus Alvarado and Rodriguez-Berrios, 2013 and S. townesi Alvarado and Rodriguez-Berrios, 2013 are recorded for the first time in Ecuador. The genus is recorded for the first time for Ecuador and Argentina. An identification key to the New World species is presented.

AbstractThree new species of Tabanidae egg parasitoids are described: Telenomus hybomitraesp. nov. and Telenomus utilissp. nov., both reared from eggs of Hybomitra nitidifrons nuda (McDunnough) and Hybomitra lasiophthalma Macquart, and Telenomus chrysopsissp. nov., reared from eggs of Chrysops aestuans Wulp, Chrysops excitans Walker, and Chrysops mitis Osten Sacken. Specimens of these species were compared with type specimens of known New World species of scelionid parasitoids attacking tabanid eggs. Diagnostic characters and identification key to the Nearctic species are provided.

Pangrapta Hübner, 1818 was erected for the North American species P. decoralis Hübner, 1818 as its type species. The genus Pangrapta presently consists of about 100 species, and is widely distributed in China and surrounding regions, as well as in the New World (Hu & Wang, 2013). In this article, three new species, P. nanlingensis sp. n., P. jianfenglingensis sp. n. and P. hainanensis sp. n., are described from China. Each of them is superficially similar to the species, P. neorecusata (Hu & Wang, 2013), P. perturbans (Walker, 1858) and P. pannosoides (Holloway, 2005), correspondently. The known Southeast Asian species, P. shivula (Guenée, 1852), is reported for the first time from China. Adults and genitalia are illustrated. The type series of all described species (including holotypes) are deposited in Southwest University of Science and Technology (SWUST), Mianyang, China.

AbstractThree new species are described; two European species, tringarius L. and lineola Fabr., are recorded for the first time; and the previously described species are redefined and new distribution records presented, with a key to the eastern species. Rhagio hirtus Loew is recognized as a good species, R. boscii Macquart and Xylophagus fasciatus Say are synonymized with albicornis Say, and R. intermedius Walker is synonymized with R. vertebratus Say. The three new species are R. dichromaticus from Louisiana, recognized by its extremely dark coloration; R. floridensis from Florida and Georgia, with yellow thorax and distinctively patterned wings; and R. orestes from Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which is close to hirtus but separable by the darker thorax and abdomen.

The European species of Euplectrus Westwood are comprehensively treated for the first time, using a combination of morphological and DNA data (CO1, the barcode). Ten species are included, seven already described: E.bicolor (Swederus), E.flavipes (Fonscolombe), E.intactus Walker, E.liparidis Ferrière, E.maculiventris Westwood, E.nigriceps Ferrière, E.phthorimaeae Ferrière, and three new species: E.carinifersp. n., E.geometricidasp. n., E.pallidigastersp. n. To stabilize the nomenclature a neotype is designated for E.bicolor. Euplectrusintactus is removed from synonymy under E.bicolor and E nigriceps from synonymy under E.platyhypenae Howard, and both are re-established as valid species. Several host records are given and presented in a table, and new geographical records are introduced for previously described species. All host records are from exposed Lepidoptera caterpillars and the dominant host groups are Geometridae and Noctuidae. A key including all European species of tribe Euplectrini is presented. Prior to this paper the identification of European Euplectrus species has been difficult and misidentifications have probably been common. Existing host and geographical records in the literature must therefore be treated with great care.

The conoidean gastropod genus Benthofascis Iredale, 1936 is examined. This genus of Conorbidae has extant species. Three previously described species from the Recent including the type species B. biconica (Hedley), B. sarcinula (Hedley), and B. lozoueti Sysoev & Bouchet are reviewed. Three new species from the Recent, B. conorbioides sp. nov., B. pseudobiconica sp. nov., and B. angularis sp. nov. are described from Australia. One of these (B. angularis) is the first Benthofascis species described from Western Australia. Two fossil species originally described as Conorbis from the Miocene and Oligocene of Australia (C. atractoides Tate and C. otwayensis Long, respectively) are for the first time assigned to Benthofascis, thus extending the geologic record of the genus to the Oligocene.

Megalota Diakonoff, previously known from the Indoaustralian Region (India, Sri Lanka, New Guinea, and Australia), Madagascar, and Africa, is reported from the Neotropics for the first time. Three previously described New World species (i.e., Megalota submicans (Walsingham), n. comb.; M. delphinosema (Walsingham), n. comb.; and M. plenana (Walker), n. comb.) were concealed within incorrect generic assignments or as “unplaced” species (i.e., lacking contemporary generic assignments). Twenty-one new species are described and illustrated: M. synchysis (TL: Venezuela), M. peruviana (Peru), M. aquilonaris (Mexico), M. vulgaris (Costa Rica), M. cacaulana (Brazil), M. macrosocia (Ecuador), M. ochreoapex (Costa Rica), M. spinulosa (Costa Rica), M. simpliciana (Costa Rica), M. jamaicana (Jamaica), M. ricana (Costa Rica), M. ceratovalva (Venezuela), M. bicolorana (Costa Rica), M. longisetana (Costa Rica), M. deceptana (Costa Rica), M. crassana (Costa Rica), M. gutierrezi (Costa Rica), M. chamelana (Mexico), M. beckeri (Brazil), M. flintana (Brazil), and M. pastranai (Argentina). Males of the genus are characterized by three distinctive features of the genitalia: the uncus consists of a pair of greatly expanded, flattened, variably round or square lobes, densely covered with spines and setae; the valvae are narrow with an elongate, apically spined process arising from the base of the costa; and the juxta is membranous with a narrowly sclerotized Uor J-shaped posterior edge. Five species have been reared from Croton spp. (Euphorbiaceae) in Costa Rica, and this is consistent with a single record of this host for an Australian species of Megalota.

The New World species of Craspedochaeta Czerny, 1903 are revised and the first New World representative of the C. biseta group (C. argoniae spec. nov.) is described from Ecuador and Bolivia. Ten new species (C. amazonensis spec. nov., C. apsilutea spec. nov., C. candida spec. nov., C. chela spec. nov., C. feminea spec. nov., C. melanosoma spec. nov., C. pacaraima spec. nov., C. pollostos spec. nov., C. protomis spec. nov., C. weemsi spec. nov.) are described from the C. transversa species group and eight new species (C. biloba spec. nov., C. brunneivibrissa spec. nov., C. chauliodon spec. nov., C. loreto spec. nov., C. phaios spec. nov., C. pullipleura spec. nov., C. xanthonotum spec. nov., C. zongo spec. nov.) are described from the C. concinna species group. Craspedochaeta basalis brasiliensis Sóos, 1961 syn. nov. and C. piceoflava (Sóos, 1962) syn. nov. are synonymized with Craspedochaeta annulipes (Johnson, 1913) comb. nov.; C. minuta Sóos, 1962 syn. nov., C.atra (Kertesz, 1903) syn. nov. and C. albohalteria Sóos, 1962 syn. nov., are synonymized with C. concinna (Williston, 1896). Craspedochaeta sasakawai nomen nov. is provided as a replacement name for C. pleuralis (Curran, 1936), which is a junior homonym of C. pleuralis (Williston, 1896) comb. nov. Agonistic behaviour is recorded for the first time in Craspedochaeta, with photographs showing male-male interactions in the Bolivian species C. pullipleura. A key is provided for all 31 New World Craspedochaeta species and the relationships of the C. concinna and C. transversa groups are discussed on the basis of male and female morphological characters. Species of Craspedochaeta are recorded for the first time in North America, with C. weemsi found in Florida, C. concinna found in Florida and New Mexico, and C. annulipes found in Georgia, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, and Texas.

Radiolitid specimens appear better preserved than those of other taxa and are thus discussed more in detail. Both the number of radiolitid genera exclusively known from the New World, and reasonable doubts about the correct attribution of some New World species to Old World genera, indicate important differences between rudist faunas at both sides of the Atlantic (Mediterranean and American Tethys, respectively) during the Late Cretaceous.
