AbstractThe Palearctic species Amara communis (Panzer) and Bembidion femoratum Sturm were both first reported from North America in 1992. Since that time a sizeable number of additional specimens of both species have been found, which substantially expands their known range on the continent. These records are summarized herein. The possible modes of introduction of both species are discussed within the context of other introduced insects, particularly those first found in Atlantic Canada. In the case of A. communis, the many coastal localities where it occurs would seem to indicate that it was introduced in association with transatlantic marine traffic, possibly the shipment of dry ballast. In the case of B. femoratum, the mode of introduction is less clear. Possible associations with nursery stock, dry ballast, and the movement of aircraft are all discussed.

This note deals with three European species of Orthotylinae now known to occur in Canada. Pilophorus confusus was discovered in 1976 in Nova Scotia and is reported for the first time from the Nearctic region. Additional distribution records are given for Orthotylus nassatus and O. viridinervis previously reported from North America by Henry (1977) and Henry and Wheeler (1979), respectively. The three species were likely introduced accidentally into this country some time ago with nursery stock importations but remained undetected until recently. They are predatory and overwinter in the egg stage. The adults of the three species are illustrated.

Twenty-one taxa of trichomycetes are recorded from aquatic insects collected from sites on the east and west coasts of Newfoundland. Three new species, Smittium colboi Strongman sp. nov., Smittium georgense Strongman sp. nov., and Stachylina forantipes Strongman sp. nov., are described. Spartiella barbata Tuzet & Manier ex Manier is reported for the first time in North America, and six species are new geographic records for Newfoundland. Of these six, three are new records for Atlantic Canada. Pennella hovassi Manier ex Manier was recovered from sites in eastern Newfoundland, and taxonomically important features of this and other species in the genus are discussed.

AbstractThe Nitidulidae and Kateretidae of the Maritime provinces of Canada are surveyed. Forty-eight species are now known to occur in the region. Twenty-six are newly recorded in Nova Scotia and nine are newly recorded on Prince Edward Island. One Palearctic species, Soronia grisea (L.), is reported for only the second time in North America. Six other nonnative species have been intercepted. One new synonym, Glischrochilus sanguinolentussanguinolentus (Olivier, 1790) (= Glischrochilus sanguinolentusrubromaculatus (Reitter, 1873) syn. nov.), is designated. Cape Breton and Prince Edward Island appear to have a depauperate fauna, perhaps reflecting an island-related diminution of species, a comparative lack of collection effort, or a combination of both. An examination of the Nova Scotia fauna indicates several distribution patterns within the province. Introduced species constitute a sizeable component of the region's fauna, with four new introductions being reported here.

Three species of the genus Solenostoma Mitt., viz. Solenostoma baueri (Schiffn.) Steph. earlier known from Indonesia, S. fusiforme (Steph.) R.M.Schust. from China, Korea, Japan, Russia and North America and S. vulcanicola (Schiffn.) Va?a, Hentschel & Heinrichs from Indonesia and Japan, are described for the first time in Indian bryoflora from Sikkim in Eastern Himalaya.

Phytophthora tentaculata was detected for the first time in North America in 2012 in a nursery on sticky monkeyflower plant (Diplacus aurantiacus) and again in 2014 on outplanted native plants. At that time, this species was listed as a federally actionable and reportable pathogen by the USDA. As a result of these detections, California native plant nurseries were surveyed to determine the prevalence of Phytophthora species on native plant nursery stock. A total of 402 samples were collected from 26 different native plant nurseries in California between 2014 and 2016. Sampling focused on plants with symptoms of root and crown rot. Symptomatic tissue was collected and tested by immunoassay, culture, and molecular techniques (PCR). Identifications were made using sequences from the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) rDNA region, a portion of the trnM-trnP-trnM, or the atp9-nad9 mitochondrial regions. Phytophthora was confirmed from 149 of the 402 samples (37%), and from plants in 22 different host families. P. tentaculata was the most frequently detected species in our survey, followed by P. cactorum and members of the P. cryptogea complex. Other species include P. cambivora, P. cinnamomi, P. citricola, P. hedraiandra, P. megasperma, P. multivora, P. nicotianae, P. niederhauserii, P. parvispora, P. pini, P. plurivora, and P. riparia. A few Phytophthora sequences generated from mitochondrial regions could not be assigned to a species. Although this survey was limited to a relatively small number of California native plant nurseries, Phytophthora species were detected from three quarters of them (77%). In addition to sticky monkeyflower, P. tentaculata was detected from seven other hosts, expanding the number of associated hosts. During this survey, P. parvispora was detected for the first time in North America from symptomatic crowns and roots of the nonnative Mexican orange blossom (Choisya ternata). Pathogenicity of P. parvispora and P. nicotianae was confirmed on this host. These findings document the widespread occurrence of Phytophthora spp. in native plant nurseries and highlight the potential risks associated with outplanting infested nursery-grown stock into residential gardens and wildlands.

The Annual Bio-Ontologies meeting (http://www.cs.man.ac.uk/˜stevens/meeting03/) has now been running for 6 consecutive years, as a special interest group (SIG) of the much larger ISMB conference. It met in Brisbane, Australia, this summer, the first time it was held outside North America or Europe. The bio-ontologies meeting is 1 day long and normally has around 100 attendees. This year there were many fewer, no doubt a result of the distance, global politics and SARS. The meeting consisted of a series of 30 min talks with no formal peer review or publication. Talks ranged in style from fairly formal and complete pieces of work, through works in progress, to the very informal and discursive. Each year's meeting has a theme and this year it was ‘ontologies, and text processing’. There is a tendency for those submitting talks to ignore the theme completely, but this year's theme obviously struck a chord, as half the programme was about ontologies and text analysis (http://www.cs.man.ac.uk/˜stevensr/meeting03/programme.html). Despite the smaller size of the meeting, the programme was particularly strong this year, meaning that the tension between allowing time for the many excellent talks, discussion and questions from the floor was particular keenly felt. A happy problem to have!

Of the many organizational changes that took place in public education in North America at the turn of the last century, few had greater impact on the school than the development of the principal. The creation of the principal's office revolutionized the internal organization of the school from a group of students supervised by one teacher to a collection of teachers managed by one administrator. In its very conception, the appointment of a school-based administrator who was authorized to supervise other teachers significantly restructured power relations in schools, realigning the source of authority from the classroom to the principal's office. Just as significant was the role that the principal played as a school based representative of the central educational office.

Background Anosteira pulchra is one of two species of the obligately-aquatic freshwater clade Carettochelyidae (pig-nosed turtles) from the Eocene of North America. Anosteira pulchra is typically rare in collections, and their distribution is poorly documented. The Uinta Formation [Fm.] contains a diverse assemblage of turtles from the Uintan North American Land Mammal Age. Whereas turtles are abundantly preserved in the Uinta Fm., A. pulchra has been reported only from a few specimens in the Uinta C Member. Methods We describe new records of Anosteira pulchra from the Uinta Basin and analyze the distribution of 95 specimens from multiple repositories in the previously published stratigraphic framework of the middle and upper Uinta Fm. Results Here we report the first records of the species from the Uinta B interval, document it from multiple levels within the stratigraphic section and examine its uncommon appearance in only approximately 5% of localities where turtles have been systematically collected. This study details and extends the range of A. pulchra in the Uinta Fm. and demonstrates the presence of the taxon in significantly lower stratigraphic layers. These newly described fossils include previously unknown elements and associated trace fossils, with new anatomical information presented. This study provides insight into the taxonomy of Anosteira spp. in the middle Eocene, and suggests the presence of a single species, though no synonymy is defined here due to limits in Bridger material.

Plauditus cestus (Provonsha & McCafferty, 1982) is widespread in eastern and central North America. We provide new data from Virginia that fill a gap in the range of distribution and new data from the Northwest Territories that extend the range of the species by over 1900 km to the northwest. The Northwest Territories specimen represents a new larval color variant, with pronounced coloration of abdominal segment 6. We emphasize the need for additional sampling of aquatic habitats in the Far North.

The millipede genus Amplaria Chamberlin, 1941 (senior synonym of Vaferaria Causey, 1958 and Speostriaria Causey, 1960) is endemic to western North America, from Mt. Palomar and San Luis Obispo, California, north to southwestern British Columbia, Canada, and east to northern Idaho. Seven species names are currently assigned to the genus. Below I describe ten additional new species: Amplaria crawfordi, Amplaria fontinalis, Amplaria rykkenae, Amplaria arcata, Amplaria baughi, Amplaria staceyi, Amplaria umatilla, Amplaria cervus, Amplaria mendocino and Amplaria flucticulus, and provide new records of Amplaria nazinta Chamberlin.
