At the University of Pretoria the author, a practical theologian, experiences a fruitful soil for the development of an interdisciplinary process. He referred to concrete examples of cooperation, but used the article to reflect on best practices for the interdisciplinary dialogue. He came to the conclusion that it probably made more sense to talk of Practical-theological alternatives rather than to describe the subject in a single fixed manner of understanding and action. Our goal should rather be to open up the boundaries between Practical Theology, Human, Social and Natural Sciences.

Boshoff became the first full-time lecturer for Missiology. The article is written mainly from the perspective of the Dutch Reformed Church, but with the acknowledgement of the appointments of Professor Yolanda Dreyer from the Nederduitsch Reformed Church of Africa and Professor Maake Masango from the Uniting Presbyterian Church of Southern Africa.

The Department of Practical Theology (Sec A): The ‘De Wet era’ and subsequent years The Department of Practical Theology (Sec A) at the University of Pretoria was established in 1968 when Professor J I de Wet was appointed head of the Department. He held this position until his death in 1983. He can thus be depicted as the ‘father’ of Practical Theology within the Faculty. This paper is an attempt to identify his viewpoints and to trace his influence in the academic and ecclesiastic spheres. The results show that he can be described as a practical theologian who stood for the preservation of the theological character of this discipline, based on biblical principals. He rejected the ‘gesellschaft’ as theoretical basis for Practical Theology. Trends since his death in 1983 will also be identified.

The inception and establishment of the Centre for Continued Theological Education (Practical Training) of the Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk van Afrika at the University of Pretoria During 1988 the Curriculum Committee of the Faculty of Theology (Sec A) launched an in-depth investigation into the training of ministers of the Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk van Afrika. With a view to maintaining the practical and academical training standards, it was decided to provide for more practical training to take place at the Centre for Continued Theological Education (CCTE). During 1989 this decision culminated in a second division of the CCTE which started to provide this important supplement to the existing curriculum, known as Practical Training. This division has since been called the CCTE (Practical Training) Department.

The article deals with the problem of full professional realization of the personality based on permanent enrichment of knowledge, skills and competences. The modern man lives in a society defined as a "knowledge society." In order to keep up-to-date in the labor market, where some professions are losing their importance and the need for new ones is created, they are faced with the need to learn throughout their whole life. The article presents the results of an empirical study. The study covers 66 graduate students in a one-year specialization to acquire a new vocational qualification "teacher", who study at the Faculty of Education at Trakia University in Stara Zagora, Bulgaria. The results indicate that the sustainability of the idea of lifelong learning is being considered and realized by representatives of different generations. The age of the respondents varies over a very wide range – from 23 to 56 years of age. The persons surveyed clearly differentiate the strengths and weaknesses of their studies at the university. They express their satisfaction with the theoretical and practical training they have received in the higher education institution. They unambiguously define their motives for acquiring a new professional qualification – from the realized opportunity for a new professional realization, competitiveness in the labour market, desire for change, to the realization of an unfulfilled dream.

In recent years some of the lecturers at the Faculty of Theology at the University of Pretoria were confronted with the question whether they believed in the historical and physical resurrection of Jesus. This article focuses on a book on the resurrection in which one of these lecturers, professor Julian Mller of Practical Theology, responds to this question. He refuses to answer with a simple yes, because he feels the question originates from a fundamentalist and modernistic theology, in which the aim is to take control of the truth. He offers a postmodern interpretation. In this article an effort is made, from the viewpoint of Missiology, to understand his views as he wishes them to be understood, and to respond to it. In Missiology, through the theological rediscovery of Biblical eschatology, the physical and historical resurrection of Jesus has become of central importance again, also in a postmodern paradigm. In conclusion, an effort is made to understand the role of our Faculty of Theology within our Southern African context.

During September 1961, a charge of heresy was laid against New Testament scholar and antiapartheid activist Prof. A.S. (Albert) Geyser. The charge was brought by three senior theological students of the University of Pretoria. They accused Geyser of interpreting Philippians 2 in such a way that it undermined the church’s doctrine of Christ’s pre-existence. The heresy trial started on 24 October 1961 under massive public interest. The trial lasted 6 months and the proceedings covered 2672 typed pages. Reporters of 25 national and international newspapers attended the trial. The heresy trial caused widespread international condemnation of what was regarded as an orchestrated attempt to get rid of Geyser, because of his public and radical opposition to apartheid. In this contribution, Geyser’s theological critique of apartheid as well as his conviction of heresy is discussed. The proceedings of the trial, minutes of the moderature, media coverage and Geyser’s publications serve as primary sources. It concludes with a critical evaluation of Geyser’s theology and his role as a public theologian.
