Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the effect of a destination positioning itself as a responsible tourist destination to improve its image. Design/methodology/approach A review of the literature pertaining to responsible tourism management, crime risk and destination image. Findings This paper observes that responsible tourism policy can help improve the image of destination South Africa. Research limitations/implications This paper provides recommendations for destinations impacted by a negative global perception or being seen as a risky area to travel to, in the context of crime. Originality/value This paper examines the role of responsible tourism management in countering the negative image of crime risk in South Africa. In general, there is a dearth of research on this association.

The lack of information related to the best practices in responsible tourism is one of the causes to tourist behavior problems. This study aims to determine the behavior of tourists in hiking, the adoption of responsible tourism practices, and to compile a responsible tourism practices guidebook. The research method used is survey research by spreading the questionnaire. Based on Likert analysis, at the pre-ascending stage, the classification of attitudes indicated by the respondents for cost and transportation is quite agreeable, while for equipment, guide, and simaksi is agreed. The ascent stage, the indicator when going up the mountain is quite agree, camping is not agree, the cook is agree, and when down the mountain is strongly agree. The post-ascent stage shows quite agreeable attitude. The public test of the guidebook, for the aspect of size and language of submission shows an agreeable attitude, while for the design, thickness, and content of the book shows an agreeable attitude. The conclusion is that (1) Still found the behavior of tourists in mountain climbing that is not environmentally friendly, (2) The responsible tourism practices of mountaineering that includes pre-ascending, ascent, and post-ascent, not well implemented by tourists, and (3) The responsible tourism practices guidebook still lack both technical and substance. The Mangrove Batu lumbang as conservation areas where live so many variety of flora and also has so beautiful view. Although the mangrove has not yet defined it as a tourist attraction, there are few tourist visitors. Assets or potential have been particularly supportive to develop as alternative tourism but there are some issues about garbage and waste. Voluntourism has become one of the best types of alternative tourism to develop. Voluntourism or volunteer tourism is a form of tourism where tourists use leisure time as volunteers and donators on conservation projects in an attraction. The purpose of this study is to identify the chances of voluntourism development in the mangrove forest Batu Lumbang based communities to help the ecosystem and grow the communities also give a new experience for tourist. The study used qualitative descriptive methods. The result of this study is the mangrove forest Batu Lumbang fillup some of the criteria of voluntourism activity. The criteria of the study based on the criteria of the global tourism business industries.
