Abstract Variational and divergence symmetries are studied in this paper for the whole class of linear and nonlinear equations of maximal symmetry, and the associated first integrals are given in explicit form. All the main results obtained are formulated as theorems or conjectures for equations of a general order. A discussion of the existence of variational symmetries with respect to a different Lagrangian, which turns out to be the most common and most readily available one, is also carried out. This leads to significantly different results when compared with the former case of the transformed Lagrangian. The latter analysis also gives rise to more general results concerning the variational symmetry algebra of any linear or nonlinear equations.

The discovery by Giacconi and his colleagues of variable X-ray sources in close binary systems certainly ranks as one of the highlights of astronomical research during the last 3 years. These remarkable objects have already been extensively studied, by optical and radio observations as well as in the X-ray band; and they seem likely to prove as significant and far-reaching in their implications as pulsars.The ‘Third Uhuru Catalogue’ (Giacconi et al., 1973a) contains about 160 sources, of which about 100 lie in our Galaxy. Their distribution over the sky (together with other arguments) suggests that these sources have luminosities of the general order 1036–1038 erg s−1, and that their typical distances are ˜ 10kpc. These galactic sources generally display rapid variability. Little else is known about most of them, but they are probably of the same general class as systems such as Her X1, Cen X3, Cyg X1 and Cyg X3. These sources have been investigated in detail, and in all cases one infers a system where the X-ray source is orbiting around a relatively ordinary star. Six sources have been optically identified, and there are some others whose binary nature is established by the occurrence of an X-ray eclipse. Orbital periods range from 4.8 h (Cyg X3) up to ˜ 10 days.

Recently, calculus of general order [Formula: see text] has attracted attention in scientific literature, where fractional operators are often used for control issues and the modeling of the dynamics of complex systems. In this work, some attention will be devoted to the problem of viscous friction in robotic joints. The calculus of general order and the calculus of variations are utilized for the modeling of viscous friction which is extended to the fractional derivative of the angular displacement. In addition, to solve the output tracking problem of a robotic manipulator with three DOFs with revolute joints in the presence of model uncertainties, robust advanced iterative learning control (AILC) is introduced. First, a feedback linearization procedure of a nonlinear robotic system is applied. Then, the proposed intelligent feedforward-feedback AILC algorithm is introduced. The convergence of the proposed AILC scheme is established in the time domain in detail. Finally, simulations on the given robotic arm system confirm the effectiveness of the robust AILC method.

It is also shown that there are natural second order theories which are proof-theoretically equivalent but have different proof-theoretic ordinals.

Shadow images generated from Shamir’s polynomial-based secret image sharing (SSIS) may leak the original secret image information, which causes a significant risk. The occurrence of this risk is closely related to the basis of secret image sharing, Shamir’s polynomial. Shamir’s polynomial plays an essential role in secret sharing, but there are relatively few studies on the power and order number of Shamir’s polynomial. In order to improve the security and effectiveness of SSIS, this paper mainly studies the utility of two parameters in Shamir’s polynomial, order number and power. Through the research of this kind of utility, the choice of order number and power can be given under different security requirements. In this process, an effective shadow image evaluation algorithm is proposed, which can measure the security of shadow images generated by SSIS. The user can understand the influence rule of the order number and power in SSIS, so that the user can choose the appropriate order number and power according to different security needs.

For a general J wheeled mobile platform capable of up to three-degrees-of-freedom planar motion, there are up to two J independent input parameters yet the output of the platform is completely represented by three independent variables. This leads to an input parameter resolution problem based on operational criteria, which are in development just as they have been developed for n input manipulator systems. To resolve these inputs into a meaningful decision structure means that all motions at the wheel attachment points must have clear physical meaning. To this effect, we propose a methodology for kinematic modeling of multiwheeled mobile platforms using instant centers to efficiently describe the motion of all system points up to the nth order using a generalized algebraic formulation. This is achieved by using a series of instant centers (velocity, acceleration, jerk, and jerk derivative), where each point in the system has a motion property with its magnitude proportional to the radial distance of the point from the associated instant center and at a constant angle relative to that radius. The method of instant center provides a straightforward and physically intuitive way to synthesize a general order planar motion of mobile platforms. It is shown that a general order motion property of any point on a rigid body follows two properties, namely, directionality and proportionality, with respect to the corresponding instant center. The formulation presents a concise expression for a general order motion property of a general point on the rigid body with the magnitude and direction separated and identified. The results are summarized for up to the fifth order motion in the summary table. Based on the initial formulation, we propose the development of operational criteria using higher order properties to efficiently synthesize the motion of a J wheeled mobile platform.
