The range of values ​​of the coefficient of resistance to movement of the chain of typical longwall armored face conveyors and the coefficient of inner viscous friction in the chain, both immersed in the moving load and during the idle run of the conveyor, is estimated. The computer model of the conveyor is built as a multi-mass elastic-viscous stretched closed chain without sag with the number of masses n = 200 and one induction drive motor located in the head of the conveyor. Using the constructed model, three-dimensional space-time dynamic characteristics of speeds and forces in the chain of the CP72 longwall armored face conveyor are obtained. Start up to rated speed v≈1 m / s and the working process is simulated with an unloaded conveyor. The spatial form of frictional self-oscillations in the model with distributed parameters is shown. The resonance frequencies and amplitudes of oscillations of the efforts in the circuit and the length of the corresponding spatial waves have been determined. It was found that at the first and second resonance frequencies, self-oscillations are not excited, since the damping effect of the electric drive is quite pronounced in this frequency band. The direct connection of vibration amplitudes with the energy efficiency of the conveyor electric drive is indicated.

Abstract Under on-engine operating conditions, a turbocharger turbine is subject to a pulsating flow and, consequently, experiences deviations from the performance measured in gas-stand flow conditions. Furthermore, due to the high exhaust gases temperatures, heat transfer further deteriorates the turbine performance. The complex interaction of the aerothermodynamic mechanisms occurring inside the hot-side, and consequently the turbine behavior, is largely affected by the shape of the pulse, which can be parameterized through three parameters: pulse amplitude, frequency, and temporal gradient. This paper investigates the hot-side system response to the pulse amplitude via Detached Eddy Simulations (DES) of a turbocharger radial turbine system including exhaust manifold. Firstly, the computational model is validated against experimental data obtained in gas-stand flow conditions. Then, two different mass flow pulses, characterized by a pulse amplitude difference of 5%, are compared. An exergy-based post-processing approach shows the beneficial effects of increasing the pulse amplitude. An improvement of the turbine power by 1.3%, despite the increment of the heat transfer and total internal irreversibilities by 5.8% and 3.4\%, respectively, is reported. As a result of the higher maximum speeds, internal losses by viscous friction are responsible for the growth of the total internal irreversibilities as pulse amplitude increases.

While it is generally accepted that traumatic meniscus pathologies lead to degenerative articular cartilage changes in the mid-to long-term and consecutively to post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA), very little is known about how such injuries initiate tribological changes within the knee and their possible impact on PTOA acceleration. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the influence of three different medial meniscus states (intact, posterior root tear, total meniscectomy) on the initial whole knee joint friction. Six ovine knee joints were tested in a passive pendulum friction testing device under an axial load of 250 N and an initial deflection of 12°, representing swing phase conditions, and under an axial load of 1000 N and an initial deflection of 5°, simulating stance phase conditions. To additionally consider the influence of the time-dependent viscoelastic nature of the knee joint soft tissues on whole joint friction, the tests were performed twice, directly following load application and after 20 min creep loading of either 250 N or 1000 N axial load. On the basis of a three-dimensional joint kinematic analysis, the energy loss during the passive joint motion was analyzed, which allowed considerations on frictional and damping processes within the joint. The so-called “whole knee joint” friction was evaluated using the boundary friction model from Stanton and a viscous friction model from Crisco et al., both analyzing the passive joint flexion-extension motion in the sagittal plane. Significantly lower friction coefficients were observed in the simulated swing phase after meniscectomy (p < 0.05) compared to the intact state. No initial whole joint friction differences between the three meniscus states (p > 0.05) were found under stance phase conditions. Soft tissue creeping significantly increased all the determined friction coefficients (p < 0.05) after resting under load for 20 min. The exponential decay function of the viscous friction model provided a better fit (R2∼0.99) to the decaying flexion-extension data than the linear decay function of the boundary friction model (R2∼0.60). In conclusion, this tribological in vitro study on ovine knee joints indicated that neither a simulated posterior medial meniscus root tear nor the removal of the medial meniscus resulted in an initially increased whole joint friction.

Flow in the inverted U-shaped tube of a conventional siphon can be established and maintained only if the tube is filled and closed, so that air does not enter. We report on siphons that operate entirely open to the atmosphere by exploiting surface tension effects. Such capillary siphoning is demonstrated by paper tissue that bridges two containers and conveys water from the upper to the lower. We introduce a more controlled system consisting of grooves in a wetting solid, formed here by pressing together hook-shaped metallic rods. The dependence of flux on siphon geometry is systematically measured, revealing behaviour different from the conventional siphon. The flux saturates when the height difference between the two container's free surfaces is large; it also has a strong dependence on the climbing height from the source container's free surface to the apex. A one-dimensional theoretical model is developed, taking into account the capillary pressure due to surface tension, pressure loss due to viscous friction, and driving by gravity. Numerical solutions are in good agreement with experiments, and the model suggests hydraulic interpretations for the observed flux dependence on geometrical parameters. The operating principle and characteristics of capillary siphoning revealed here can inform biological phenomena and engineering applications related to directional fluid transport.

The features of motion of a non-linear oscillator under the instantaneous force pulse loading are studied. The elastic characteristic of the oscillator is given by a polygonal chain consisting of two linear segments. The focus of the paper is on the influence of the dissipative forces on the possibility of occurrence of the elastic characteristic non-symmetry dynamic effect, studied previously without taking into account the influence of these forces. Four types of drag forces are considered, namely linear viscous friction, Coulomb dry friction, position friction, and quadratic viscous resistance. For the cases of linear viscous friction and Coulomb dry friction the analytical solutions of the differential equation of oscillations are found by the fitting method and the formulae for computing the swings are derived. The conditions on the parameters of the problem are determined for which the elastic characteristic non-symmetry dynamic effect occurs in the system. The conditions for the effect to occur in the system with the position friction are derived from the energy relations without solving the differential equation of motion. In the case of quadratic viscous friction the first integral of the differential equation of motion is given by the Lambert function of either positive or negative argument depending on the value of the initial velocity. The elastic characteristic non-symmetry dynamic effect is shown to occur for small initial velocities, whereas it is absent from the system when the initial velocities are sufficiently large. The values of the Lambert function are proposed to be computed by either linear interpolation of the known data or approximation of the Lambert function by elementary functions using asymptotic formulae which approximation error is less than 1%. The theoretical study presented in the paper is followed up by computational examples. The results of the computations by the formulae proposed in the paper are shown to be in perfect agreement with the results of numerical integration of the differential equation of motion of the oscillator using a computer.

Abstract Electro-Hydraulic Actuator (EHA) system is a third order non-linear system which is highly suffer from system uncertainties such as Coulomb friction, viscous friction and pump leakage coefficient which makes this system more complicated for the designing of the controller. The Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controller has proposed in this paper to control EHA system and main problem in its application is to tune the parameter to its optimum value. Two different methods are used to tune the PID controller which are trial and error and Ziegler-Nichols method. MATLAB Simulink is used to simulate the system. In order to determine the performance of EHA system for the position tracking. 3 different of external disturbance such as 0N, 5000N and 10000N has been injected into the system. Simulation results show that the Ziegler-Nichols fine tuning method provides the better tracking performance when compared to the trial and error method for every specific disturbance setting. The Ziegler Nichols method provides better disturbance rejection as the performances indexes such as percentage overshoot, settling time and steady state error are not affected by the varying of disturbance.

In this work, the analysis and design of a speed control system of a variable reluctance motor with six poles and four phases is presented. The nonlinear motor model includes the nonlinearity of the Coulomb friction plus the viscous friction. The structural analysis of the non-linear model is carried out, which is linearized at the operating point established at 2000rpm. Both the non-linear and linear models are compared both in their structure and in their responses through digital simulations, finding that under certain conditions both have similar behaviors. Subsequently, based on the linear model, a classic PI controller is designed and subjected to regulation, tracking and load torque variation tests. The controller design is carried out using the Bode shaping technique, guaranteeing adequate gain and phase margins with a higher bandwidth than the mechanical subsystem mode. The robustness is verified by means of the digital simulation of the control system using the non-linear model, which is also subjected to load variations, finding that the PI controller has excellent performance in both regulation and tracking. Finally, two additional controllers are proposed: the first is a PII controller, the objective of which is to reduce the effect of the non-linearity called dead zone present in the motor at start-up or at low speeds. The second is a PI controller that adds a new technique for reducing the ripple present in the speed and torque responses, characteristics of this type of motor.

Abstract The object of the study is an exoskeleton of the lower extremities with a rigid structure of the power frame, which has 7 degrees of freedom. The movement of the exoskeleton in the sagittal plane is considered with the assumption of symmetrical movement of the right and left legs. The aim of the study is to develop a mathematical model of the dynamics of the exoskeleton, taking into account the forces of viscous friction in the joints. The equations of motion are obtained under the condition that there is no slippage of the points of contact with the supporting surface. Based on the results of numerical simulation, the control moments were obtained, which must be created by the drives to provide program movement.

Abstract A mathematical model of the problem of heating a porous medium containing a liquid by an acoustic field is presented. Assuming that the main mechanism that converts the energy of the wave field in a porous medium into heat is the force of viscous friction between the saturating liquid and the skeleton, the function of a volumetric heat source for the process of heating a porous medium using an acoustic field is constructed. The dependences of the power of a heat source on the parameters of the wave field and the parameters determining the state of a porous medium are analyzed.

AbstractIn a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ H , we study a dynamic inertial Newton method which aims to solve additively structured monotone equations involving the sum of potential and nonpotential terms. Precisely, we are looking for the zeros of an operator $A= \nabla f +B $ A = ∇ f + B , where ∇f is the gradient of a continuously differentiable convex function f and B is a nonpotential monotone and cocoercive operator. Besides a viscous friction term, the dynamic involves geometric damping terms which are controlled respectively by the Hessian of the potential f and by a Newton-type correction term attached to B. Based on a fixed point argument, we show the well-posedness of the Cauchy problem. Then we show the weak convergence as $t\to +\infty $ t → + ∞ of the generated trajectories towards the zeros of $\nabla f +B$ ∇ f + B . The convergence analysis is based on the appropriate setting of the viscous and geometric damping parameters. The introduction of these geometric dampings makes it possible to control and attenuate the known oscillations for the viscous damping of inertial methods. Rewriting the second-order evolution equation as a first-order dynamical system enables us to extend the convergence analysis to nonsmooth convex potentials. These results open the door to the design of new first-order accelerated algorithms in optimization taking into account the specific properties of potential and nonpotential terms. The proofs and techniques are original and differ from the classical ones due to the presence of the nonpotential term.
