scholarly journals AN EMPIRICAL STUDY ON LENDING PATTERN AND PERCEPTION OF COMMERCIAL BANKS TOWARDS SMALL AND MEDIUM ENTERPRISES LENDING

Micro, Small and Medium sector (MSME) is the most dynamic sector due to its capacity for innovation, competence for advancements and perseverance to face multiple challenges. Though this sector contributes 8 per cent to GDP, 45 per cent towards manufacturing output and 40 per cent of exports. Still, they lack support to grow exponentially. Understanding the lending pattern of the banks and the perception of commercial banks towards MSME lending is essential not only for academic knowledge but also could necessitate policy changes. The objective of the research is to understand the lending pattern of banks to SMEs and the perception of commercial banks towards SME lending. The researcher used both primary and secondary data. Statistical tools ANOVA and Kruskal Wallis tests are used to analyze the collected data. The results indicate that there is no significant difference in the lending pattern of public sector banks, Private sector banks and foreign banks and the bank staff have a similar level of perception on difficulties in lending to SMEs, perception on the rejection of loan, perception on reluctance to serve SME sector, perception on loan default and factors affecting credit decisions irrespective of the type of the bank and experience in SME lending.

Investment-based crowdfunding can be used as an alternative financing tool for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises in Indonesia. Since the population in Indonesia is dominated by Muslim, Islamic financial technology companies that provide crowdfunding services are continue to emerge and develop. The development of these services also encourages the progress of the halal industry because both have integrated relationships. However, not all funding campaigns for crowdfunding services are successful. This study aims to analyze the development of Islamic crowdfunding business in Indonesia and factors affecting the success of funding campaigns in these services using multiple linear regression methods. Primary data obtained through interviews and literature review while secondary data is collected from 39 funding campaigns in 4 Islamic crowdfunding online services. It was found that the regulation of Islamic financial technology did not yet exist though in practice it was already widely found. On the other hand, crowdfunding models in Indonesia still need improvement in its scheme. By using a quantitative approach, it was found that funding target, campaign duration, payback periods and rate of return have a positive effect on campaign success, while a minimum amount of investment has a negative effect which means the minimum amount of investment available in the crowdfunding service is appropriate. After conducting research with a qualitative and quantitative approach, SWOT analysis was conducted at the end of the study to find out the challenges and opportunities for the halal industry in utilizing such Islamic crowdfunding service.

Corporate governance is regarded as the key foundation upon which organizations are more productive, better managed and controlled. Performance has a link to good corporate governance for the sustainable organizational success. This project narrowed down specifically to the factor of corporate governance to determine the practice of corporate governance in SACCOs in Kiambu County, Kenya. The researcher used a descriptive survey design in soliciting information on the practice of corporate governance in SACCOs in Kiambu County, Kenya. The research also made use of both secondary and primary data. Secondary data was collected from statistical data available from the SASRA records and those from the Ministry of Cooperatives. Primary data was obtained by use of a closed ended questionnaire administered on senior managers of the sampled SACCOs. The target population was 8 deposit taking SACCOs and a total population of 200 SACCO managers in Kiambu County, Kenya. Each SACCO had a different number of respondents depending on its size and the number of senior managers in it.  Data analysis was done using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) to generate quantitative reports which is presented in this project in the form of tabulations, percentages and descriptive statistics and inferential data computed using a regression equation. The findings of this project are that the practices of corporate governance have a direct effect on the overall performance of SACCOs in Kiambu County, Kenya contributing to 70% of the factors affecting performance. Recommendations put forward from the findings of this project is that there is need to research on the effect of corporate governance on performance of other institutions such as commercial banks, microfinance institutions and small and medium enterprises. The findings of the research include the finding that majority of those in senior positions in the SAACOs sampled are men at 64% of the sample size while women are at 36%. Another finding of the research is that majority of those in senior management positions are persons aged between 40 and 59 years. The research further brought out the fact that majority of the respondents comprising of 39% had held their current position for a period of between 4 and 6 years while 42% of the respondents had worked in the SACCO for a period of between 10 and 12 years. One of the recommendations from the research is on the need to have increased disclosure of information to the shareholders. A further recommendation was the need to train the board of governance often on corporate governance so as to better equip them to uphold the practice in their respective SAACOs. A final recommendation is the need for further research by other scholars.

Small and medium enterprises are increasingly seen as playing an important role in the economies of many countries. Studies identify adequate and accessible financing as a critical component of SME development. Many SMES are unable to access loans from the commercial banks due to lack of financial knowledge, collateral and credit history. The drive to minimise risks informs the decision of banks to minimise loan approval for SMEs. The question that now arises is how to strike a balance between financial intermediation towards achieving economic development, while reducing operational and credit risks that confront financial intermediation at large, especially banks. The aim of this paper is to investigate the factors affecting the SME lending-decision process of commercial banks and uncover the possible way forward for South Africa

This research analyzes some factors affecting economic activities in relation with the conduct of pilgrimage. Those factors are the pilgrimage cost, the amount of pilgrims, and the amount of pilgrimage officers. The objective of this research is to acquire the information of how each factor and all factors together affect the economic activities. This research also analyzes the effect of foods and drinks expenses, the effect of nonfoods and drinks expenses, and the effect of miscellaneous expenses on UMKM - Micro, Small, Medium enterprises' economic activities.             This research is conducted in DKI Jakarta in 2007. The population of this research is the average economic activities in DKI Jakarta in 2007. There are 42 respondents (Banks), 157 respondents (travel agencies), and 50 respondents (UMKM - Micro, Small, Medium enterprises) which are taken as samples from the population using the purposive sampling method. The data is obtained by the researcher using questioners and secondary data which is taken from 1990-2007.             The methodology used in this research is based on. the causal relationship model In testing the hypothesis of this research, the researcher uses the simple and multiple regression methods, and path analysis method. The significant rate a = 0,05 used in determining the interpretation of the statistic result. The data is processed using SPSS (Statistical Packages for the Social Sciences) version 12.00.             The results of the analysis in the 1st equation -are (i) the effect of the pilgrimage cost on banks' revenues is quite strong, (ii) the effect of the pilgrimage cost on travel agencies' revenues is quite strong, (iii) the effect of the pilgrimage cost on UMKM - Micro, Small, Medium enterprises' revenues is weak.             The results of the analysis in the 2nd equation are (i) the effect, of the amount of pilgrims on Banks' revenues is very weak, (ii) the effect of the amount of pilgrims on travel agencies' revenues is very weak, (iii) the effect of the amount of pilgrims on UMKM - Micro, Smal4 Medium enterprises' revenues is very weak.             The results of the analysis in the 3rd equation are (i) the effect of the amount of pilgrimage officers on banks' revenues is very weak, (ii) the effect of the amount of pilgrimage officers on travel agencies' revenues is very weak, (iii) the effect of the amount officers on UMKM-Micro, Small Medium enterprises' revenues is very weak.   The results of the analysis in the 4th equation are (i) the effect of all three factors which are the pilgrimage cost, the amount of pilgrims, and the amount of pilgrimage officers simultaneously on banks' revenues is very strong, (ii) The effect of all three factors which are pilgrimage costs, the amount of pilgrims, and the amount of pilgrimage officers simultaneously on travel agencies' revenues is strong, (iii) The effect of all three factors which are pilgrimage costs, the amount of pilgrims, and the amount of pilgrimage officers simultaneously on UMKM-Micro, Small Medium enterprises' revenues is strong.             The result of the analysis in the 5th equation is the effect of foods and drinks expenses on UMKM-Micro, Small Medium enterprises' revenues is weak. In the 6th equation, the effect of nonfoods and drinks expenses on UMKM-Micro, small Medium enterprises' revenues is weak. In the 7th equation, the effect of miscellaneous expenses on UMKM - Micro, Small Medium enterprises' revenues is quite strong. In the 8th equation, the effect of all three factors which are the effect of foods and drinks expenses, the effect of nonfoods and drinks expenses, and the effect of miscellaneous expenses simultaneously on UMKM-Micro, Small Medium enterprises' revenues is quite strong.             The implication of the research results mentioned above is the factors in the conduct of pilgrimage do increase the economic activities (Banks, Travel Agencies, and UMKM - Micro, Smal4 Medium enterprises) in DKI Jakarta. Therefore, considering that matter, the General Director of the conduct of pilgrimage division of Department of Religion Republic of Indonesia should determine the pilgrimage cost which is affordable, increase the service, and provide a good information system which will result in a better conduct of the pilgrimage. This paper identifies whether there was a performance difference among micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) led by men and by women in Vietnam during the period 2005–2013 and aims to provide explanations for the differences, if any, in various performance indicators. The paper adopts a quantitative approach using a firm-level panel dataset in the manufacturing sector in 10 provinces/cities in Vietnam in five waves from 2005 to 2013. Fixed effect models are estimated to examine the influence of firm variables and demographic, human capital characteristics of owners/managers on firms’ value added, labor productivity and employment creation. We found that men led MSMEs did not outperform those led by women on average. Although the average value added was lower for female-led firms in the informal sector, the opposite was true in the formal sector where women tend to lead medium-size firms with higher value added and labor productivity. The performance disparity was more envisaged across levels of formality and less clear from a gender perspective. Moreover, while firms owned by businessmen seemed to create more jobs, firms owned by women had a higher share of female employees. No significant difference in business constraints faced by women and by men was found.

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are the main contributor toward prospering the Malaysian economy [1]. Despite the fact that Malaysia is a fast growing economy in South-East Asia, death of SMEs is unavoidable. An exploratory study was conducted to investigate the factors that have an impact on business performance and success in Malaysia. Interviews with SMEs from different industries were conducted. Several factors were found to contribute to the success of business. The factors are classified into financial and non-financial determinants. These factors include customer satisfaction, service quality, experience, business expansion, competitor orientation, solving problems, cash flow, and the amount of sales and revenue. Building on these interviews, a discussion and conclusion have been provided.

The aim of this study is to find out the major challenges that hinder smooth operation of women entrepreneurs of Bangladesh. It also finds the reasons behind the success of the women entrepreneurship. Both primary and secondary data have been used to conduct the study. The questionnaire included questions about economic problems, family related issues, social constraints and other limitations faced by women entrepreneurs and the reasons behind their success. Women involved in various small and medium enterprises take on the challenge to work in a male-dominated society, competitive and complex economic and business environment. However, the identified challenges are inadequate capital, sales promotion, getting permission to start-up a business, gender discrimination, illiteracy and lack of knowledge among women, non-availability of training program and technical support, lack of managerial experience, in some cases young people make ill talk about the enterprise and so on. Personal qualities such as hard work and perseverance, management skills and marketing skills, support provided by their spouses or family are the main reasons behind the success of the women entrepreneurs. The level of participation of women in mainstream economic activities remains insufficient and the percentage of women in business is still much below than that of their male counterparts.Journal of Business and Technology (Dhaka) Vol.9(2) 2014; 27-41

The purpose of this study was to analyze: 1) The implementation of the Deed of Establishment of Cooperative manufacture in Rembang. 2) The role of the Notary as the maker of the Deed of Establishment of Cooperative Enterprises. 3) Barriers and solutions in the Deed of Establishment of Cooperative Development in Rembang.The approach method in this research is juridical empirical, data sources used are primary and secondary data obtained through interviews and literature study, performed data analysis by descriptive analytic.Results of the research results can be concluded: 1) Implementation of Creation Deed of Establishment of Cooperative in Rembang which starts with the preparation stage of formation, preparation stage meetings of formation, stage meetings of formation, stage request for approval rights of legal entities cooperatives, and the stage of issuance of the deed pendiiran and 2) As the role of Notary Deed of establishment of cooperative enterprises in Rembang is as maker deed of cooperative efforts. Notaries have the right authority / legal standing in a deed of incorporation of cooperatives. 3). Obstacles and solutions in the Deed of Establishment of Cooperative Development in Rembang of the cooperative is a member of the cooperative awareness level is still low, less managerial capacity, and limited capital resources. Barriers of Notary Public Notary is still much limited knowledge of Notary Deed Official Cooperation (PPAK) and the low interest of the Notary Deed Cooperative (NPAK) in Rembang district were registered for the Legal Entity Administration System Cooperative (SISMINBHKOP). The pillar goals of this research are to review the conditions of MSMEs, their contribution to employment creation, income generation, poverty alleviation, contributions to the local, regional and national GDP, stimulating entrepreneurial climate and the challenges and opportunities in the design, implementations, marketing opportunities, linkages, financial sources, dynamics, survival and policy landscape. To achieve the presented purposes, we collected primary and secondary data through a survey, focus group discussions and documents reviews. We used qualitative and quantitative approaches to analyse the collected data using various statistical programs. We used descriptive and econometric statistical analysis to process the data, obtain the relevant estimation results and fully discuss the purposes under the study. We firmly maintain that the systems we presented, and the methods applied enabled us to tackle the aims of the study. MSMEs in Ethiopian are the chief sources of job, income, significantly contribute to the local, regional and national GDP and key policies to eliminate poverty. In the log-linear regression, we found that MSMEs initial capital, BDS, access to credit facility are the key determinants of MSMEs performance. Majority of the MSMEs produce for local and regional markets; few for national markets and none for international markets. Besides, we found that sex of MSMEs owner/manager, BDS, access to credit and capital size strongly determine the survival of MSMEs. Based on this study, the major obstacles of MSMEs in Ethiopia are the question of sustainability, lack of credit, weak market linkage, insufficient training, weak human resources development schemes, dependency on government and spoon-feeding mentality, oscillations in government policies, price variations, weak links and poor market and product development strategies.
