International audience We present in this paper a formal approach of description, posting and handling of the mathematical structured objects; based on the formalism of attribute grammars. We are interested particularly in the problem of two-dimensional and bidirectional posting of certain expressions and mathematical formulas. Indeed, in more of the two-dimensional character that presents certain mathematical symbols like the square root or the matrix, we also note the problem of posting rightto-left of an Arab text in a context planned for a posting left-to-right of an Indo-European text, or a bidirectional posting mixing the two modes. After a study of some solutions suggested in the literature, we show how the method of attribute grammars adapts easily to these types of problem. Nous présentons dans ce papier une approche formelle de description, d'affichage et de manipulation des objets structurés mathématiques ; basée sur le formalisme des grammaires attribuées. Nous nous intéressons particulièrement au problème d'affichage bidimensionnel et bidirectionnel de certaines expressions et formules mathématiques. En effet, en plus du caractère bidimensionnel que présentent certains symboles comme la racine carrée ou la matrice, on note le problème d'affichage de droite à gauche d'un texte arabe dans un contexte prévu pour un affichage de gauche à droite d'un texte indo-européen, ou encore un affichage bidirectionnel mélangeant les deux modes. Après une étude de quelques méthodes proposées dans la littérature, nous montrons comment la méthode des grammaires attribuées s'adapte facilement à ces types de problèmes.

Analysis of Algorithms International audience We analyse the asymptotic behaviour in the mean of a non-commutative rational series, which originates from differential cryptanalysis, using tools from probability theory, and from analytic number theory. We derive a Fourier representation of a first-order summation function obtained by interpreting this rational series as a non-classical rational sequence via the octal numeration system. The method is applicable to a wide class of sequences rational with respect to a numeration system essentially under the condition that they admit a linear representation with nonnegative coefficients.

International audience We study properties of β-numeration systems, where β > 1 is the real root of the polynomial x3 - mx2 - x - 1, m ∈ ℕ, m ≥ 1. We consider arithmetic operations on the set of β-integers, i.e., on the set of numbers whose greedy expansion in base β has no fractional part. We show that the number of fractional digits arising under addition of β-integers is at most 5 for m ≥ 3 and 6 for m = 2, whereas under multiplication it is at most 6 for all m ≥ 2. We thus generalize the results known for Tribonacci numeration system, i.e., for m = 1. We summarize the combinatorial properties of infinite words naturally defined by β-integers. We point out the differences between the structure of β-integers in cases m = 1 and m ≥ 2.

International audience Tools dedicated to mathematics need to display formulas and to interact with them. In this paper, we present a summary of existing tools, then we describe FIGUE, an incremental two dimensional layout engine, developed at INRIA, to get a specialized toolbox for building customized editors and graphical user interfaces. Finally we give an exemple of interface using FIGUE to develop mathematical proofs on computer. Afficher des formules mathématiques et interagir avec ces formules sont des atouts primordiaux pour les outils informatiques dédiés aux mathématiques. Dans cet article, nous faisons un bilan des outils existants puis nous décrivons FIGUE, moteur d'affichage interactif incrémental et bidimensionnel, développé à l'INRIA, pour obtenir une bibliothèque dédiée au développement d'éditeurs de documents structurés et d'interfaces graphiques. Enfin nous montrons un exemple d'utilisation de FIGUE, dans le cadre du développement de preuves mathématiques sur ordinateur.

Building on the picture of post-war Anglo-Danish documentary collaboration established in the previous chapter, this chapter examines three cases of international collaboration in which Dansk Kulturfilm and Ministeriernes Filmudvalg were involved in the late 1940s and 1950s. They Guide You Across (Ingolf Boisen, 1949) was commissioned to showcase Scandinavian cooperation in the realm of aviation (SAS) and was adopted by the newly-established United Nations Film Board. The complexities of this film’s production, funding and distribution are illustrative of the activities of the UN Film Board in its first years of operation. The second case study considers Alle mine Skibe (All My Ships, Theodor Christensen, 1951) as an example of a film commissioned and funded under the auspices of the Marshall Plan. This US initiative sponsored informational films across Europe, emphasising national solutions to post-war reconstruction. The third case study, Bent Barfod’s animated film Noget om Norden (Somethin’ about Scandinavia, 1956) explains Nordic cooperation for an international audience, but ironically exposed some gaps in inter-Nordic collaboration in the realm of film.

The conclusion reaffirms the essential role played by cinema generally, and the coming-of-age genre in particular, in the process of national identity formation, because of its effectiveness in facilitating self-recognition and self-experience through a process of triangulation made possible, for the most part, by a dialogue with some of the nation’s most iconic works of literature. This section concludes by point out the danger posed, however, by an observable trend toward generic standardization in New Zealand films motivated by a desire to appeal to an international audience out of consideration for the financial returns expected by funding bodies under current regimes.

This collection of essays, drawn from a three-year AHRC research project, provides a detailed context for the history of early cinema in Scotland from its inception in 1896 till the arrival of sound in the early 1930s. It details the movement from travelling fairground shows to the establishment of permanent cinemas, and from variety and live entertainment to the dominance of the feature film. It addresses the promotion of cinema as a socially ‘useful’ entertainment, and, distinctively, it considers the early development of cinema in small towns as well as in larger cities. Using local newspapers and other archive sources, it details the evolution and the diversity of the social experience of cinema, both for picture goers and for cinema staff. In production, it examines the early attempts to establish a feature film production sector, with a detailed production history of Rob Roy (United Films, 1911), and it records the importance, both for exhibition and for social history, of ‘local topicals’. It considers the popularity of Scotland as an imaginary location for European and American films, drawing their popularity from the international audience for writers such as Walter Scott and J.M. Barrie and the ubiquity of Scottish popular song. The book concludes with a consideration of the arrival of sound in Scittish cinemas. As an afterpiece, it offers an annotated filmography of Scottish-themed feature films from 1896 to 1927, drawing evidence from synopses and reviews in contemporary trade journals.
