The purpose of the present study is to determine the pre-service social studies teachers’ opinions about digital storytelling process that they were experienced during 2018-2019 fall term. Mainly, their attitudes towards learning and teaching are tried to determine according to their opinions after their digital storytelling experiences. This study employed an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) as a framework. Pre-service teachers were encouraged to create their own digital stories by telling the story along with the pictures through programs like windows movie maker, IMovie and so on. Data were collected through a survey and with semi-structured face to face interviews. A survey developed by researcher was given to all students who were enrolled to democracy and human rights course in 2018-2019 fall term and a total of 37 students completed it. Six pre-service social studies teachers in the group were selected for face to face interviews depended on their answers to survey questions. Three of them were who generally stated most positive views towards the digital storytelling process and other three were who generally reflected the challenges and difficulties during the process.

Background: Dignity is a fundamental concept in healthcare. The symptoms of multiple sclerosis have a negative effect on dignity. Understanding of lived experience of dignity in people with multiple sclerosis is crucial to support dignity in practice. Research aim: The aim was to explore the sense of dignity experienced by people with multiple sclerosis. Research design and participants: An interpretative phenomenological analysis design was adopted, using data collected through face-to-face interviews with 14 participants. Ethical considerations: The study was approved by the faculty Ethical Committee (No. EC 1828/2016). Findings: Four interconnected superordinate themes emerged from analysis: Loss of a fully-fledged life: Violating the dignity-of-self; To accept and fight: Promoting the dignity-of-self; Contempt and rudeness: Indignity-in-relation; and Those who know and see, help: Promoting dignity-in-relation. The loss of former fully-fledged life has a dramatic impact on integrity and impaired dignity-of-self. Accepting illness and changed identity impaired by multiple sclerosis was the step that the participants considered to be important for reacquiring the sense of dignity. The participants encountered misunderstandings, prejudices, embarrassment, insensitive remarks, labelling, unwillingness and impersonal treatment as indignities. Acceptance of their condition, needed support, the feeling of being part of a group, sensitivity and the sharing of problems had a positive effect on their dignity. Discussion: Continual changes in functional ability threaten an individual’s identity and were experienced as violations of dignity. Based on this, participant’s dignity-of-self was not a moral, but much more existential value. Acceptance of changed identity and fighting spirit were important for restoring their dignity-of-self. The misunderstandings, prejudices and unwillingness had a negative impact on their dignity-in-relation. On the other side, support from others in fighting promoted their dignity-in-relation. Conclusion: Dignity is manifested as a complex phenomenon of lived experience of people with multiple sclerosis and also an umbrella concept for providing good quality of person-centred care.

Parent-adolescent communication on sexuality is one of the key determinants of sexual and reproductive health outcomes of adolescents. Despite parent-adolescent communication on sexuality, statistics show an increase in the number of teenage pregnancies. This interpretative phenomenological analysis explored the perceptions of parents in a rural village in the Umzinyathi Health District in KwaZulu-Natal regarding the provision of sex education to adolescents. Ten parents of adolescent children were purposively selected to participate in the study, and data were collected using face-to-face, semi-structured interviews. Field notes were also taken to complement the audio recordings. Data were analysed thematically using the framework for interpretative phenomenological analysis. The results showed that rural parents face challenges in providing sex education to their teenagers. Sex education provided to adolescents is uncoordinated and haphazard. Parents have inadequate information and they are fearful and embarrassed to initiate sex talks with their teenagers. An age-appropriate, structured, formal, culture-sensitive, community-based sexual education programme aimed at empowering parents with knowledge and skills to provide contextual and age-relevant sex education to their teenage children is recommended.

<b>International students’ experiences are a major concern for universities and educational researchers. Globally, Vietnam is a top source country for international students. Universities in Aotearoa-New Zealand host an increasing number of Vietnamese students, but researchers often subsume this group into generic cultural and ethnic categories such as ‘Asian student’. As a result, little is known about their experience.</b><div><b><br></b><p>This study explores the everyday experiences of 10 Vietnamese master’s students from an Aotearoa-New Zealand university through a series of semi-structured in-depth interviews. An interpretative phenomenological analysis approach enabled me to capture the essential meanings of the participants’ experiences and understand what it was like to be Vietnamese students in Aotearoa-New Zealand. </p> <div><b><br></b></div>As the participants built new lives in Aotearoa-New Zealand, they dealt with the practicalities of uncomfortable or difficult housing conditions as well as established relationships within the diverse cultural contexts of the host country. Accommodation issues had a significant impact on their studies and sense of security and belonging. The students had a hard time finding a place to live. Not feeling comfortable, safe or at peace in their new houses, they did not feel like they were at home. They did not view their houses as a place where they could take refuge and leave the hustle of life outside. <p><br></p><p>In academic settings, the students initially struggled to deal with a range of new and unfamiliar learning and teaching styles (e.g., classroom discussion) and conventions about referencing and citing. These made them feel overwhelmed and bewildered. During these formative months, many of them experienced language difficulties, a sense of cultural dislocation, and a deep yearning for their families. These difficulties forced them to learn to deal with challenges and become independent. The students drew strength from their Vietnamese cultural values and practices to overcome difficulties. </p> <p><br></p><p>Based on the findings, I propose a framework for exploring the experience of short-term Vietnamese international students. The study provides implications for host universities to assist Vietnamese students as they orient themselves to daily life in Aotearoa-New Zealand.</p></div>

Traditionally, family-focused care extends to parents and siblings of children with life-limiting conditions. Only a few studies have focused on the needs of grandparents, who play an important role in the families of children with illness and with life-limiting conditions, in particular. Interpretative phenomenological analysis was used as the methodological framework for the study. Seven bereaved grandparents participated in this study. Semistructured, individual, face-to-face interviews were conducted. A number of contextual factors affected the experience of bereaved grandparents, including intergenerational bonds and perceived changes in role following the death of their grandchild. The primary motivation of grandparents stemmed from their role as a parent, not a grandparent. The breadth of pain experienced by grandparents was complicated by the multigenerational positions grandparents occupy within the family. Transition from before to after the death of a grandchild exacerbated the experience of pain. These findings about the unique footprint of grandparent grief suggest the development of family nursing practice to better understand and support grandparents during the illness of a grandchild, in addition to bereavement support.

Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) is an experiential research methodology that aims to rigorously investigate personal meaning and lived experience. Informed by phenomenological philosophy, hermeneutics and idiography, IPA allows researchers to conduct a detailed exploration of how participants construct meaning from their personal and social contexts. The method has been applied further afield in social science disciplines such as education. This article provides insight into the process of conducting IPA in music education research, which is illustrated by material taken from studies conducted by the author who began using the analysis system in 2005. In this context IPA is regarded as an authentic approach situated in constructivism for exploring and interpreting authentic learning and teaching practice. It is proposed that such an approach can be used in music education qualitative research studies to provide an evidence-base for practice.

Background Fathers can play an important role in their children’s learning about relationships and sexuality but we know very little about the father’s lived experience in this regard. Aim To explore eight fathers’ perceptions and experiences of discussing puberty, relationships and reproduction with their 10-year-old children. Methods The paper commences with a genealogical analysis of the history of sex education in England from the Public Health Act of 1848 to the present day. Interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) was used as both a methodology and a method. Face-to-face interviews were conducted with each father and results were analysed ideographically, followed by analysis across the group. Interpretations were developed using a Foucauldian lens of governmentality and biopower. Findings The paper explores how synthesis of IPA with a Foucauldian lens revealed significant tensions between the fathers’ cognitions, accounts and behaviours, which were underpinned by an enduring perception of sexuality as taboo. Conclusion By providing a contextualised understanding of the fathers’ practices, this study demonstrates that a more informed approach to health promotion strategy can be achieved and the implications for nursing are explored.

Suicidal behaviour is a complex phenomenon—its aetiology spans biological, psychological, environmental, social and cultural facets. Men’s deaths by suicide outnumber women in every country in the world. This study explored the male experience of suicide attempts and recovery as well as factors which may be protective for men. Men (n = 12) participated in semi-structured face-to-face interviews which were subjected to Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Four master themes were identified: (1) “characteristics of attempt/volitional factors”, (2) “dealing with suicidal thoughts and negative emotions”, (3) “aftermath” and (4) “protective factors”. The theoretical and clinical implications of this study are discussed, including help seeking, emotional expression, the long-term impact of suicide attempt as well as the applied contribution to established theories.
