In this work we study the propagation of light in a twist-oriented pleochroic nematic liquid crystal with pleochroic dye. The dependence of the intensity of transmitted light on the azimuthal angle of the linearly polarized incoming light has been investigated experimentally. As a result, the role of absorption anisotropy has been identified.

Our intention in the present work is to find out the role of dye in the molecular orientation of the weakly polar nematic liquid crystal D6AOB. The doping of a dye introduces a disturbance in the molecular arrangement of the nematic liquid crystal molecules. However, this disturbance is found to be sensitive to the concentration of the dye dispersed in the nematic liquid crystal. It is found that orientation in the dyed nematic liquid crystal is less ordered than the orientation in the pure nematic liquid crystals. This behavior has been explained on the basis of intermolecular interaction, i.e., dipole–dipole interaction.

The spatial dynamics of polarized light in a smoothly inhomogeneous anisotropic medium mixed with an anisotropic absorbing dye is analyzed. As such a medium, a twist-oriented nematic liquid crystal with a pleochroic dye was considered. In the geometrical-optical approximation, a system of coupled shortened equations for the Cartesian components of the electric component of the light wave is obtained. A system of coupled complex equations was analytically solved and the behavior of a linearly polarized wave in such a medium was analyzed in the case of both absorption and amplification. An asymmetric effect of these two processes on the spatial dynamics of light propagation in the medium is found.

Basing on Landau–de Gennes theory, this study investigated the chiral configurations of nematic liquid crystals confined to cylindrical capillaries with homeotropic anchoring on the cylinder walls. When the elastic anisotropy (L2/L1) is large enough, a new structure results from the convergence of two opposite escape directions of the heterochiral twist and escape radial (TER) configurations. The new defect presents when L2/L1≥7 and disappears when L2/L1<7. The new structure possesses a heterochiral hyperbolic defect at the center and two homochiral radial defects on both sides. The two radial defects show different chiralities.

The orientational behaviour of some liquid crystals with various molecular structures was studied by means of the Raman scattering depolarization method. The Raman scattering spectra of linearly polarized light were recorded as a function of temperature in the nematic phase. On the basis of these spectra the order parameters 〈P2〉 and 〈P4〉 as well as the molecular distribution function were determined. The obtained data were compared with those estimated on the basis of polarized light absorption and emission measurements. The influence of the molecular structure on the orientational order of liquid crystals was discussed.
