The peer assisted learning (PAL) scheme in the mathematics degree at Sheffield Hallam University consists of final year PAL leaders guiding groups of first year students through an assessment task. Evaluation of the scheme in 2014-15 took place through a number of methods, including questionnaires, reflective log book comments and group contribution sheets. The scheme was found to help to ease the transition into university, help develop a mathematics community through the creation of support groups, and encourage inter-year interactions, developing skills, and increasing confidence of all involved. Engagement and enjoyment was very high and success extended far beyond the duration of the scheme. Despite the overall success, improvements will be made following on from comments and suggestions made by students.

In the last years, the Integrated Master in Mechanical Engineering (MIEM) at FEUP revealed a very high capability for attracting young students. However, the true reasons that determine the interest of the students in the Mechanical Engineering cycle of studies (CS) are not well understood. This paper tries to shed light on this question. A survey was prepared and applied to the first year students enrolled on MIEM in 2020-2021. The responses were analyzed statistically and organized comprehensively. The results show that the opinions of others, the quality and availability of information, the versatility and employability rates of the CS, the quality of training and the reputation of the HEI/CS are crucial. The findings can be further explored by the FEUP/CS decision makers to delineate policies envisaging strengthening the ability of Mechanical Engineering to compete for the best potential candidates to higher education. Indeed, the higher education institutions are aware that they have to fight for students in the global recruitment market and be more proactive than they used in the past.

Тhe paper is aimed to help the inconsistency between the training of school graduates and requirements of universities for first-year students through the creation of training courses in profession-oriented classes. A variant of construction of elective courses for subject oriented classes is exemplified though the analysis of several topics from «Mathematics and Informatics». A sample program of elective course «Arithmetic and geometric progression and introduction to the theory of limits» recommended for all profiles is displayed. On the basis of these principles it is possible to develop other programs of elective courses for majoring classes on various subjects. The program contains all the necessary components, along with examples of tasks, materials for practical classes and individual work.

Research into the transition of first year students in higher education (HE) confirms that student integration into the academic community is a primary condition for student success (Borglum & Kubala, 2000; Tinto & Pusser, 2006; Tovar, Simon & Lee, 2009; Stebleton, Soria & Huesman, 2014). It is also crucial that it is combined with peer support if students are going to settle into university life (Hamshire, Jack, Prowse, & Wibberley, 2015a). This article seeks to explore the potential value and purposes of peer assisted learning (PAL) as a tool to increase the social and academic integration of first year university students. Focus group interviews (n=16) were conducted between the spring and autumn of 2013 with first-year students (n=93) enrolled in the Faculty of Educational Sciences (Psychology and Educational sciences) at the Free University of Brussels. By using the method of appreciative inquiry (AI), respondents suggested that peer-assisted learning methods are important tools for enhancing social and academic integration.  In this sense, tutoring and mentoring need to address specific criteria on at least two organisational dimensions (Topping & Ehly, 2001): (a) objectives of the subject and (b) contact installation. This article aims to prompt further discussion on the potential, value and purposes of peer-assisted learning programmes for integration.

The academic performance and retention of first-year students are under scrutiny worldwide. In view of the emphasis on first-year success, a support group was established in a first-year module - Financial Accounting 178 - at Stellenbosch University in South Africa. The article reports on students perceptions of their participation and their pass rates within the support group. Both qualitative and quantitative data were obtained from interviews, questionnaires, and an analysis of support group pass rates. The overall conclusion from this study is that students in financial accounting perceived their participation as positive and an increase in pass rates, compared to previous results, was observed. Small-group participation, tutorial classes, and peer student assistance all appear to contribute positively to improved performance of support groups. A number of areas for possible future research were identified from the results.

Peer assisted learning (PAL) was initiated to support the first-year students. In medical faculty, first-year students often find starting new academic life challenging. The impact from the peer mentors’ aspect is not widely explore. The aim of this study was to review studies that reported the impact of PAL programs on peer mentors in medical faculty, particularly on their academic life and communication skill. The DOAJ, PubMed Central, SciELO, and Science Direct databases advanced search used to conduct a systematic literature searching. Systematic search was performed according to preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analysis (PRISMA) checklist recommendations. Five studies were included. All of the reviewed studies shown the impact of PAL programs on mentors’ academic life. Three studies have shown both the impact of PAL programs on mentors on their academic life and communication skill. Studies in this review have shown positive impacts on mentors’ academic life and communication skill. Good communication skills, empathy, leadership and teaching skills will promote individual abilities and skills as a doctor, be it as a practitioner, or as an educator.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the aerobic capacity of the first year students in the Lithuanian Military Academy.63 first year students (57 men and 6 women) agreed to participate in the study. They performed graded cycling exercisetest until voluntary exhaustion. The starting work load was set at 70 W and was increased every minute by 21 W.Pulmonary gas exchange was measured breath-by-breath using the portable telemetric system (Oxycon Mobile,Jaeger). The maximal oxygen uptake (VO 2  max) was determined as the highest VO 2  within 20 s period obtained duringincreasing cycling test. Maximal cardiorespiratory values at this point were calculated as well. The VO 2  max in militaryacademy cadets was 52.9 (4.6) ml / kg -1  / min -1  (from 42.7 to 63.4). The aerobic capacity in most cadets may beconsidered as high and very high (80%), and only in one fifth of the subjects — as moderate, applying the normativescale for untrained persons. Keywords: maximal oxygen uptake, aerobic capacity, cycling ergometry.
