This study was conducted in secondary schools librariestoascertain the factors retardingthe development ofschool libraries in North Central Nigeriaand to proffer suggestedstrategies to overcome them.The researchersused tworesearch questions to guide the study which adopted the descriptivesurvey design method.A total of10 secondary schools were used as sample with8 respondents comprising the Principal, a Teacher Librarian and 6 other teachers were used as respondentsin each school. The main instrument for data collection was questionnaire while data collected were analyzed using the simple frequency and percentage table.The findings highlight lack of accommodation,inadequate funding in school libraries in Nigeria, as well as inadequate provision of library resources and services, amongst others, as factors retardingthedevelopment of school libraries.The study recommends some measuresthat would enhance the development of school librariesto includeproper awareness creation,recruitment of qualified staffas well as sufficient funding of the libraries.

This article reports on a study that investigated the issues and challenges in the provision of school libraries in secondary schools in Katlehong, Gauteng province, South Africa. A qualitative research method was used to conduct the study among 14 secondary schools in Katlehong. The target population included 14 teacher-librarians, 14 principals and one Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) official, who were interviewed. Additionally, 102 teachers participated in focus group discussions (FGDs). Convenience sampling was used to select the teachers, while purposive sampling was used to select all the other participants in the study. The study revealed that teachers are not using school libraries in Katlehong because they are unable to provide relevant information services due to a lack of space; out-dated and inadequate information collections; uncatalogued and poorly organised books; inaccessible opening hours; and a lack of funds and networked computers. Only 29 per cent of the schools had qualified teacher-librarians in their employ, while the 71 per cent unqualified ‘teacher-librarians’ indicated that they were managing the school libraries without the professional skills required to guide both teachers and learners in the use of library resources. The teacher-librarians were also burdened with additional teaching loads, which negatively affected the opening hours of the libraries. It was recommended, firstly, that a specific library period be allocated to each class to allow for library orientation; secondly, that sufficient funding be allocated to each school library to enable it to function optimally; and, thirdly, that library hours be regulated and qualified library staff be employed.

This study analyzed the use of library resources by staff and students of secondary schools in southern Kaduna senatorial district. The population of this research comprised all secondary schools in southern Kaduna senatorial zone. Multistage sampling technique was employed in drawing a sample size of 800 students and 400 teachers. The instrument used for data collection was a questionnaire and was tested for reliability using Cronbach alpha. The reliability coefficient of Library use scale was= 0.9. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Findings indicate that majority of the respondents reported that nobody encouraged them to use the library. While, respondents were also tried to benefit from all facilities of the library; borrow books from the library. In the face of using library facilities, majority of the respondents established that they visit the library not only when they have assignment. Based on the findings, the study concludes that organizing a series of lecture under user instruction or user education or library orientation program is required in public senior secondary schools. The study recommends that teachers should also mandate students to use the school library effectively; it can help attain high academic achievement. It was also recommended that professional librarians should be employed in public senior secondary schools to plan and execute result oriented information education.

The purpose of this research was to determine strategies used by 8th grade students in Number Sense problems. This was a case study of 28 8th grade students at three similar secondary schools in a city centre south of Turkey. A Number Sense test consisting of 25 items designed according to five main Number Sense components was used as a data collection tool. The data were analyzed using qualitative analysis methods. The students preferred Strategies Based on Rules while solving the Number Sense test compared to strategies based on number sense or Strategies Partially Based on Number Sense.

In this paper, the methods for developing a database of Spanish writing that can be used for forensic linguistic research are presented, including our data collection procedures. Specifically, the main instrument used for data collection has been translated into Spanish and adapted from Chaski (2001). It consists of ten tasks, by means of which the subjects are asked to write formal and informal texts about different topics. To date, 93 undergraduates from Spanish universities have already participated in the study and prisoners convicted of gender-based abuse have participated. A twofold analysis has been performed, since the data collected have been approached from a semantic and a morphosyntactic perspective. Regarding the semantic analysis, psycholinguistic categories have been used, many of them taken from the LIWC dictionary (Pennebaker et al., 2001). In order to obtain a more comprehensive depiction of the linguistic data, some other ad-hoc categories have been created, based on the corpus itself, using a double-check method for their validation so as to ensure inter-rater reliability. Furthermore, as regards morphosyntactic analysis, the natural language processing tool ALIAS TATTLER is being developed for Spanish.  Results shows that is it possible to differentiate non-abusers from abusers with strong accuracy based on linguistic features.

Document delivery is a service offered by academic libraries that allows distance education students to access or obtain the research materials required for their studies. These services find the document and send a copy of it to the student (Calvert, 2001). Document delivery services aim to provide the same level of service to on-campus students and to off-campus students. They provide access to library materials at the student’s home institution as well as from other libraries. Document delivery services for distance students are generally part of a library’s Interlibrary Loan Department but document delivery can be a separate department. Some libraries have a division or department dedicated to serving distance students and document delivery is handled there when they exist. In the United States, regional accreditation agencies consider document delivery services to be a vital part of a distance education program. For example, the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools’ Guidelines for Distance Education emphasize that students should have access to the appropriate library resources for the field of study (2000).

A subset of international scholarship from the full Causality: School Libraries and Student Success corpus comprising empirical studies conducted in non-American locations (n=47) are examined for: geographic distribution, publication outlets, citations, data collection and analysis methods, and research strands. The majority of papers used one experimental design or two or more methods for quasi-experimental design approach for data collection, and used at least one or more often two or more data analysis methods. Six categories describe the research: learning environment, student attributes, teacher and school leadership characteristics, instructional interventions, academic skill development, and external factors for achievement.
