Prevalence Of Tooth Injuries Among Children 2 To 13 Years Of Age Reporting To Dental Hospital- An Institutional Based Retrospective Study

Introduction: Oral mucosa can be affected by a variety of soft tissue lesions and conditions. Benign as well as malignant lesions of oral cavity are common. Squamous cell carcinoma is one of the commonest malignancies. The present retrospective study was undertaken to study the prevalence of various oral mucosal lesions in a tertiary care dental hospital of Kathmandu. Methods: This retrospective study was carried out in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology at Kantipur Dental College and Teaching hospital from January 2015 to January 2017. The study included biopsy specimen from the oral cavity. The parameters included in the study were age, gender, site of the lesion and histopathological diagnosis. The data collected was statistically analyzed. Results: A total of 111 biopsy cases were included in the present study. Out of which, there was 16 (14.4%) cases of non neoplastic and 16 (14.4%) cases of benign pathology. The oral cavity lesions were commonly seen in age range between 6-74 years where males 59 (53.2%) were mostly affected. The most common site for oral lesion was buccal mucosa 23 (20.7%) and anterior gingiva 23 (20.7%). 15 (13.5%) cases of oral squamous cell carcinoma were seen as the predominant malignancy affecting in the vestibular region 8 (7.2%). Conclusions: The present study shows benign as well as the non neoplastic lesions were more prevalent in oral mucosa with the buccal mucosa and anterior gingiva as the commonest site of occurrence. The majority of previous studies that have looked at the management of delayed eruption secondary to a supernumerary tooth advocate exposure of the unerupted tooth at the time of supernumerary removal. However, accepted UK orthodontic practice is to extract the supernumerary and provide sufficient space for the unerupted tooth to erupt spontaneously. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the management and outcome for 96 patients who had been referred to Newcastle Dental Hospital between 1976 and 1988 who between them had 120 teeth with delayed eruption secondary to a supemumerary tooth.

The hypothesis that palatally-displaced canines are associated with smaller than average lateral incisors or with congenital absence of adjacent lateral incisors was tested on a West of Scotland population. A retrospective study of the records of orthodontic patients attending Glasgow Dental Hospital was carried out. One-hundred-and-eighty-two subjects with palatally displaced canines were identified. The tooth length of lateral and central incisors was measured on radiographs and the crown widths of lateral incisors were measured on study casts. One-hundred-and-six extracted maxillary lateral incisors were examined to allow more accurate measurement of crown width and root length than was possible from radiographs. An association was sought between the size of the lateral incisor or its absence, the position of the adjacent maxillary canine, and between crown size and root length of the lateral incisor. The conclusions supported the hypothesis that there is a weak association between palatally displaced maxillary canines and lateral incisors of smaller than average crown width. There was weak support for the association between palatal canines and absence of the adjacent lateral incisor. There was no correlation between lateral incisor crown width and root length.
