COVID-19 has reshaped our lives. Our houses turned into co-working areas, school classrooms, and playgrounds. Social distancing has put more weight on parents to ensure their children’s education and cognitive gains. This has raised questions about the impact parents had on their children’s cognitive levels even before COVID-19. This paper is an attempt to show how parents’ behavior contributes to improving the cognitive level of their preschool children in a developing country. The paper also attempts to determine the relationship between parenting behavior and socioeconomic factors such as income and education.

The purposes of this study were (a) to contrast the reported perceptions of maternal rearing using the Child's Report of Parental Behavior Inventory of 70 disabled (cerebral palsied) and 70 non-disabled adolescents of similar sex, age, intelligence, and socioeconomic status and (b) to evaluate the impact of severity of physical impairment within the disabled group. Analyses of variance were completed using group (disabled/controls) as one dimension and sex as the within-groups source. Partial correlations were used to assess the relationship between severity of incapacitation and perceived maternal behavior. Of the 18 main effects, two were significant, suggesting that the non-disabled perceived their mothers as more possessive and intrusive than did the disabled. Males perceived their mothers as significantly more lax in discipline and allowing more autonomy than did females. Severity of disability was only modestly related to perceived maternal behavior. With this sample of disabled adolescents it was suggested that a physically handicapping condition and its severity may be of more limited influence in the maternal rearing process than assumed.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between environmental management practices (EMP) and competitive operational performance with respect to reduced cost, improved quality, improved flexibility and improved delivery as well as overall environmental performance, of firms, using data from a developing country. Design/methodology/approach The study employed a survey approach with responses from 164 informants from different industries and used partial least squares structural equation modeling to examine the relationship between EMP and competitive operational performance and their overall impact on the environmental performance of firms. Findings The results indicate that EMP by firms have a significant positive effect on firms’ competitive operational performance. Again, firms’ competitive operational performance has a partial positive effect on the overall environmental performance. It was also realized that the EMP initiated by a firm have a direct positive impact on the overall environmental performance of the firm. Research limitations/implications There is the need for organizations to take steps to plan and implement EMP since it is likely to enhance their competitive operational performance as well as their overall environmental performance. Practical implications The findings demonstrate the impact of EMP on competitive operational performance as well as on the overall environmental performance of firms. This is important as firms struggle with balancing investments in those practices against the perceived benefits that might be obtained from the practices. Originality/value The work provides insights and adds to the literature in the area of EMP and firm performance by providing evidence from a developing country environment. This study is among the few that have investigated the impact of EMP on firm performance in developing country environments.

ABSTRACT Objective The aims of this study were to assess the prevalence of dental caries among preschoolers at public and private schools and to evaluate the associations among the prevalence of the disease, socioeconomic factors, and the impact of a university extension project. Methods Five-year-old preschool children were examined and were divided into three groups: children from private schools who were not receiving regular preventive care (group 1), children from public schools who were not receiving regular preventive care (group 2), children from public schools who were receiving preventive care through a university extension project (group 3). The children were examined for decay-missing-filled index, and their caregivers were interviewed to collect data on socioeconomic factors. Fisher’s and Chi-squared tests were used to analyze the data. Results Group 1 showed better socioeconomic and oral conditions compared with groups 2 and 3. Parents’/guardians’ level of education was associated with the presence of disease in their children; however, income showed no association. Conclusion Dental caries were more prevalent in the group with worse socioeconomic indicators, and although the university extension project had been implemented in one of the groups, it was not able to overcome health inequalities.

The main aim of this paper is to investigate the relationship between market orientation and business performance. Hypothesis concerning the relationship between market orientation and business performance were posited and tested. Data were collected using a mail questionnaire survey approach. This study employed a simple random sampling procedure in selecting the organisations for inclusion in the sample. A total of 158 Malaysian manufacturing organisations participated in this study. Factor analysis, Pearson correlation, and multiple regression methods of data analysis were utilised for hypotheses testing. The results revealed that market focus, market action, market planning, market feedback, and market coordination jointly explained 32.6% of the variance of business performance. Market focus and market coordination were found to have statistically significant association with business performance. The outcome of this study provides vital information from a developing country perspective on the impact of market orientation practices on manufacturing organisations’ performance.

The purpose of the study is to determine the effectiveness of the impact of fitness classes with elements of sports dancing on the development of coordination abilities in children 6-8 years, to identify the relationship between wellness activities with elements of sports dance and indicators of physical development of older preschool children. Research methods - theoretical analysis of special scientific and methodological literature and documentary materials, anthropometric research methods, pedagogical methods (experiment, observation, fitness testing), methods of mathematical statistics. Anthropometric studies involved children 6-8 years of age engaged in fitness with elements of sports dancing (24 people). By means of pedagogical methods, the influence of wellness fitness classes with elements of sports dances on the development of coordination abilities of older preschool children was determined. The study identified the age at which children of pre-school age are most involved in exercising children's fitness with elements of sports dancing. The relationship between wellness activities with elements of sports dance and indicators of physical development of older preschool children is established. The factors that positively influence the development of coordination abilities of older preschool children engaged in fitness with elements of sports dance have been identified. According to the results of the experiment, it was found that fitness classes with elements of sports dance significantly contribute to the development of coordination abilities in children of older preschool age.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the literature on business model (BM) design by deepening the relationship between BM design themes and performance in a sample of firms based in a developing country. In particular, the authors deepen the relationship between business model novelty (BMN), business model efficiency (BME), the trade-off between novelty and efficiency – that the authors call BM ambidexterity – and performance. Design/methodology/approach Data are drawn from a sample of 107 manufacturing and service firms based in a developing country (Albania). Hierarchical regression is used to assess the impact on firm performance from the two BM design themes and their interaction. Findings The authors find novelty-centred BM design is significantly related to firm performance while efficiency-centred design has no direct effect on performance. However, the authors also find that BME positively moderates the relationship between BMN and firm performance. Research limitations/implications The relationship between BM design and firm performance can be better understood if contextualised. In the paper, the authors find that different types of BM designs have different impacts on the performance of firms based in a developing economy. While novelty matters, quite surprisingly the authors find no support for efficiency. Additionally, the authors find the interaction between the two design themes (BM ambidexterity) to have a positive impact on firm performance. Practical implications The surveyed firms based in a developing economy appear to benefit from novelty-centred BM designs. Efficiency-centred designs have a more ambiguous role: while efficiency alone seems not to pay off, an efficient BM design may facilitate the market exploitation of a novel design. Originality/value This study responds to a precise call for additional quantitative empirical studies on the relationship between BM and performance. The study also contributes to an emerging stream of research focused on BM ambidexterity.

The purpose of this paper is to provide further insights into drivers and consequences of supply chain sustainability in a developing country. Specifically, it aims at empirically examining the impact of stakeholder pressures on sustainable supply chain practices as well as the impact of these practices on sustainable performance including environmental, economic, and social dimensions. By means of regression analysis of data collected from 112 firms in a developing country context, the results indicate that pressures by organizational champions and customers are positively related to supply chain sustainability. However, the relationship between government pressures and supply chain sustainability is insignificant. Moreover, the findings provide evidence that the impact of supply chain sustainability on sustainable performance is significantly positive. The paper has important implications for managers, practitioners, and researchers to improve sustainable supply initiatives and sustainable performance in organizations.

Abstract:Retinoblastoma is the most common intraocular malignancy in children. Early detection plays an important role in management of retinoblastoma because it significantly affects the prognosis. Unfortunately, early detection is difficult in developing country due tolow socioeconomic level. This study aims to describe the profile of retinoblastoma in Dr. M. Djamil Hospital Padang from 2003 to2012, and to show the relationship between socioeconomic factors and management of retinoblastoma. Data was obtained from patients’ medical records. There were 99 retinoblastoma patients in this period, 56 (56.56%) male and 43 (43.44%) female. The majority of patients aged 3-4 years (40.40%). Unilateral retinoblastoma presented in 76 patients (76.76%). Protusio is the most common ocular presentation(65.66 %). Combination of exenteration and chemotherapy was the most commonmanagement (32.32%). The most common reason causing delay to seek treatment wasfinancial problems (42.42%) followed by lack of informationabout the complication of disease (35.35%). These two factors were dilemma, because on one hand we were trying to find cases earlier, but patients’ financial and socioeconomic factors were not supporting.
