Hydroponics is a system of growing plants in nutrient solutions which could be from organic or inorganic sources with or without the use of aggregate medium. It is an alternative way of growing vegetables that would overcome problems encountered in conventional farming like soil acidity, alkalinity, and soil-borne diseases. This study was conducted to evaluate the growth, yield, and profitability of ampalaya varieties grown under aggregate hydroponic systems using different nutrient solutions. The experiment was laid out in a Factorial Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications using ampalaya hybrids as factor A and nutrient solutions as factor B. The two ampalaya hybrids (Galaxy and Jade Star) applied with commercial solution showed significantly greater values in terms of horticultural parameters, yield, and yield components. Between the two ampalaya hybrids, no significant effect was observed in most of the characteristics except on the weight of roots. Galaxy had heavier roots compared to Jade Star. Consistent superiority of plants applied with commercial solution was manifested in most parameters. The overall results revealed that production of ampalaya hybrid using an aggregate hydroponic system is profitable.

ABSTRACT Growth regulators can be used to further retard or inhibit vegetative growth. In this sense, the objective of this study was to determine the effects of age and number of trinexapac-ethyl applications on the growth and yield of sugarcane. The experiment was in a randomized complete block design with four replications. The treatments were in a 3 x 2 + 2 factorial arrangement, where factor A corresponded to the application times of the plant growth regulator (120, 200 and 240 days after bud burst (DAB) of sugarcane) and factor B to the number of applications (one or two applications). In addition, two controls (one with three applications and another application without the regulator) were added. The application of trinexapac-ethyl decreased the number and the distance between buds, height, root volume and sugarcane yield. The sequential application (2 or 3 times) induced an increase in stem diameter and three applications of the product increased the number of plant tillers. The use of growth regulators applied at 240 DAB has reduced plant height, however without changing the number of buds. It can be concluded that trinexapac-ethyl changes sugarcane growth and yield, regardless of season and number of applications.

An experiment was carried out at Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh to evaluate the effect of urea super granule (USG) as a source of nitrogen on the yield and yield components of transplant Aman rice cv. BRRI dhan39, BRRI dhan46 and BINA dhan7. Five levels of N (viz., 0, 60, 120 kg ha-1 as prilled urea and 60 and 120 kg ha-1 as USG) were taken as experimental treatments. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Plant height, effective tillers hill-1, grains panicle-1 and grain yield varied significantly due to different cultivars. All the yield and yield components except 1000-grain weight were influenced significantly by the levels of nitrogen fertilizer. The highest grain yield (4.82 t ha-1) was recorded in BINA dhan7 and the lowest one (4.30 t ha-1) was recorded in BRRI dhan39. Nitrogen @ 120 kg ha-1 as USG performed the best among the treatments in respect of yield and yield components of rice. The highest grain yield (5.46t ha-1) was obtained from BINA dhan7 with 120 kg N ha-1 as USG which was statistically identical with 60 kg N ha-1 as USG. A considerable amount (31.25%) of prilled urea (PU) nitrogen could be saved by using USG. It may be concluded that USG could be used as N management to achieve better nitrogen use efficiency in reducing N loss than the PU.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/pa.v24i1-2.19095 Progress. New superior varieties (VUB) are a reliable technological innovation to increase rice productivity. This study aims to determine the yield potential of some lowland rice VUB. The assessment was carried out on land owned by a member of the Sumber Rejeki Farmer Group, Cintaratu Village, Lakbok District, Ciamis Regency at Dry Season II in June-September 2020. The study used a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with six varieties of treatment and was repeated ten times. The varieties tested were Inpari 32, Inpari 42, Padjadjaran, Cakrabuana, Inpari IR Nutrizinc, and Siliwangi varieties. The variables observed included the growth component, yield component, and yield component. Data were analyzed using the F test followedby the Duncan Multiple Range Test at the Q=5% level. In addition, a correlation test was conducted between the growth components, yield components, and yields. The results of the study indicated that the new superior rice varieties studied had different performance in growth, number of tillers, yield, and yield components. Inpari 42 variety produced the highest productivity, namely 6.88 ton ha-1 which was supported by the number of grains per panicle, percentage of filled grains per panicle, and percentage of empty grain per panicle which were better than other varieties. Plant height and number of grains per panicle were positively correlated with yield.

An experiment was conducted to evaluate effect of urea fertilizer on yield and yield components of Zea mays L. Using Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) split plots in three replications in agricultural research farm of Balkh University by 2019. Doses of urea used in this experiment were 0, 80, 160 and 240 kg ha-1 , respectively. It has been found that amount of nitrogen fertilizer (urea) had significant effect on yield of maize at p<0.05. The higher level of nitrogen caused the higher grain yield, number of kernels per ear, the number of grains per ear row, ear diameter, cob length, grain per plant and plant height. As a result 7.76 ton ha-1 was recorded as high yield while 240 kg ha-1 urea was used, and 5.12 ton ha-1 was recorded as low yield in treatment one with 0 kg ha-1 of nitrogen fertilizer. Finally, as a result using 240 kg ha-1 nitrogen fertilizer is recommended.

Tuberose (Polianthes tuberosa L.) is a perennial summer flower grown by smallholders in Kenya for export. However, its production and export volumes have declined drastically due to nematodes infestation. This study evaluated the effect of Cleome gynandra accessions on nematode management on tuberose. Experiment was conducted at the Horticulture Research Field, Egerton University, Kenya using a randomized complete block design with four replications. The treatments were: five accessions of C. gynandra namely ‘Simlaw’, ‘Egerton’, ‘Taastrup’, ‘PS’ and ‘IP8’, applied at 6 kg/m2 and compared with Brassica napus, solarization and untreated control. Data was collected on growth and yield parameters, nematode infestation and quality of tuberose. Data collected was subjected to analysis of variance at p≤0.05 and means separated using Tukey’s test. Biofumigation with Cleome gynandra accessions helped to reduce nematode population by 34%, gall numbers by 83% and galling index by be 96% when compared with the control. Use of biofumigation helped to improve plant height and leaf number of tuberose by 16% and 87%, respectively, when compared with the control. Use of biofumigation helped to improve spike length by 32%, marketable spikes by 80%, and flower yield by 90% and reduced nonmarketable spikes by 95% when compared with the control. Based on the above results, use of Cleome gynandra accessions and other biofumigants such as rape seed can be used to manage nematodes and improve growth, yield and quality of tuberose.
