In some of our previous articles, we have analysed and discussed the goals of physics education at secondary schools and some aspects of physics education at the secondary school level.  In this contribution, we proceed with bringing our experience with the preparation of new physics teachers at Comenius University in Bratislava. We discuss the theoretical background we used as a base for preparing the curriculum for university students – future physics teachers and we highlight some aspects of their preparation. Especially, we focus on the development of abilities to scaffold the learning of their future secondary schools' students. In details, we describe the ways we try to improve the abilities of our students to scaffold their future secondary schools' students in concept formation, in process skills development, in planning and processing inquiry, ability to scaffold effective work with literature. As a vast majority of our graduates will teach their secondary school students in Slovak language, which is a language used by a small number of people (5 mil), we discuss also some specifics related to physics textbooks for secondary schools in Slovak language, university textbooks available in Slovak language and ability of our university students-future physics teachers to work with sources written in English. At the conclusion, we propose some possible improvements, hopefully, inspiring also for preparation of physics teachers for other educational systems.

The world is becoming more and more competitive and for the performance and personal progress is the key factor. A study was designed to know teachers' perceptions regarding students' performance at the higher secondary school level. All the higher secondary school students (male and female) were the population of the study. The higher secondary schools of district Toba Tek Singh were considered for the target population. The 80 teachers (40 male and 40 female) were chosen as a study sample proportionate from the 17 higher secondary schools. The collected data were statistically analyzed using descriptive statistics frequency and percentages with Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software. The demographic characteristic of respondents shows that the vast majority of teachers have a graduate degree, and half of the teachers belong to the 25-50 age category and have up to 10 years experience, respectively. The teachers’ response indicated that students of higher secondary schools have confidence in asking and answering questions.

The significance of improving nutrition knowledge in order to have a positive influence on food choices and health should not be underestimated. This study assessed the nutritional status and knowledge of school children attending selected secondary schools in Sokoto metropolis. The study population was purposively drawn from secondary school students in Nigeria attending Federal Government College and State Government-owned schools. Four secondary schools were used for the study: Federal Government College (FGC), Sani Dingyadi Secondary School (SDUSS), Nagarta Secondary School (NSS) and Army Day Secondary School (ADSS). A sample of 240 school students, aged 10 to 25 years participated in the study. The measuring instruments included a questionnaire to determine the nutrition knowledge of the students. Anthropometric measurements included weight, height and mid-upper arm circumference, measured using standard methodologies. The mean age recorded for male and female students were 18.0±1.90 and 15.7±1.20 years, respectively. The result showed that 27.9% were underweight, 7.5% overweight and 64.6% had normal BMI status. Nutritional status was significantly related with sex (χ 2 = 16.169, p<0.05) but not with age (χ 2 = 1.368, p>0.05). The prevalence of underweight was higher among the males (33.9%) compared to the females (13.9%), while more females were overweight (15.3%) compared to the males (4.2%). Seventy one percent performed poorly in the nutrition knowledge assessment rating. The overall performance of the female students was significantly higher (χ 2 = 46.386; P<0.05) than their male counterparts. Furthermore, 5, 12 and 12% had excellent, very good and good nutrition knowledge, respectively, while 33% and 38% had fair and poor nutrition knowledge, respectively. The results further revealed that the students were deficient in knowledge and understanding of the facts about energy and nutritive values of foods. Therefore, adequate nutrition education is needed at the secondary school level; this will enable the students to make good food choices and positively influence their eating habits thereby ensuring better nutritional status.

Mathematical reasoning uses a logical mindset in analyzing a problem that will eventually be marked by concluding activity on the problem. Someone who has good reason, will certainly be careful in acting and deciding something. The material content on the calculus is the material that exists at the secondary school level which will become the field of teaching the prospective master of math teacher bachelor. The reasoning ability studied influences student learning in the future as it applies to advanced courses, for example in the ability of proof will always be used in the course of differential equations, algebraic structure, vector analysis, real analysis, etc. While as a teacher candidate who will teach at the secondary school level, then this reasoning ability becomes one of the achievements of mathematics learning for high school students, therefore teachers who teach it must have good reasoning ability. Error analysis is very important to evaluate and reflect on the problem structure as well as on the treatment in learning in order to improve the reasoning ability.

This study investigated the influence of fishing related activities on academic performance of secondary school students in Rachuonyo North Sub-County. The specific objectives were to examine the activities associated with fishing and determine how they influenced academic performance of secondary students in the Sub-County. The study targeted students and principals of the 49 secondary schools in Rachuonyo North Sub-county. The research used simple random sampling to select 14 public secondary schools and 20 Form Three students from each of the sampled schools. The total sample size was 292 respondents. Primary data was collected and analysed using quantitative and qualitative methods and then presented in tables in percentages. Data analysis was done using SPSS and the Microsoft Excel software. The study established that students participated in fishing activities while attending school. Major fishing activities that students engaged in included: actual fishing an agreement  index of 82.9% of students; repairing of fishing nets which was supported by 74.2% of students; setting of nets in the lake which was supported by 84.4% of students; and removal of fish from the nets which was agreed to by 83.9% of students. Some (91.7%) of the students believed that their counterparts who engaged in fishing activities tended to perform poorly in their classwork.  The study has recommended that parents, School Boards of Management and the communities along the beaches collaborate with each other in order to keep students from engaging in fishing activities for this likely to improve school attendance and academic performance of students. The Government should enforce compulsory basic education as well as provide it free to all children at this level of education.

The purpose of this study was to determine the validity of KCPE as a predictor of KCSE scores among public secondary school students in Kisii central Sub-county, Kenya. This study was guided by a conceptual framework where KCPE was the independent variable and KCSE the dependent variable. It adopted Correlational and Ex-post-facto research designs. The study population was 3,897 KCSE candidates from 55 public secondary schools. Stratified random sampling based on school type and size was used to select 16 public secondary schools for the study. Saturated sampling was employed to include all KCSE candidates whose KCPE marks were available in each sampled school, yielding a sample of 1,391 students.  Data used included 2006 KCPE scores and 2010 KCSE scores of the same students under study. Data was collected using a researcher made pro forma. It was analyzed quantitatively using correlations and regression analyses. Results showed a strong positive Pearson’s correlation coefficient (r=0.693; n=1391; p < 0.05) between KCPE and KCSE scores. It recommended that; KCPE should continue to be used as selection tool for secondary school admission and school evaluation using KCSE examination scores should be based on students’ past KCPE scores.

An important part of the mathematics syllabuses at the secondary school level in most countries is the concept of function. However, secondary school students often experience difficulties with this concept. These difficulties are well-known in the research literature. The study applies the mathematical knowledge for teaching (MKT) framework, including the category knowledge of content and students (KCS). Teachers’ ability to anticipate students’ difficulties is one aspect of KCS. The aim of this study is to investigate secondary mathematics student teachers’ KCS regarding the concept of function. Ten mathematics student teachers participating in a Supplementary Teacher Education Program answered a questionnaire about fictive secondary school students’ various difficulties with the concept of function. Follow-up interviews were conducted with four of the respondents. Compared to the findings of previous research on students’ difficulties with the concept of function, the respondents in the study sometimes provide reasonable suggestions about the sources of students’ difficulties. Some of the respondents demonstrate an aspect of KCS when they suggest that students can reason that a function must be defined by one algebraic expression only, and that students only know about continuous functions. However, no respondent suggests that one source of students’ difficulties with a constant function with an implicit domain is the missing domain. In addition, some respondents take for granted that students can interpret the algebraic representation of a piecewise-defined function and translate it into a graph.

The paper presents the results of the study on participative mapping of landscape values and conflicts and a subsequent interpretation of the indicated localities from respondents’ point of view. The study focused on younger groups of landscape users—lower-secondary-school students (aged 11–15) and university students (aged 20–25)—in comparison with experts’ points of view. The research presumed that the perception of landscape values and issues are determined by age, level of education and by experience in the field. The study was conducted in the southeastern area of the Czech Republic (49° N, 16° E) via online data collection. Based on the obtained records, we conclude that, in terms of the typology of the valuable and problematic locations, the individual groups of respondents did not differ significantly and the selection of location types was similar across all groups. Lower-secondary-school students rather identified cultural values associated with everyday activities, and the descriptions contained emotional overtones. University students preferred natural values associated with formal values based on general consensus or conflicts associated with society-wide impacts. The experts base served as the benchmark for other groups.
