Unveiling the relationship between taxonomy and function of the microbiome is crucial to determine its contribution to ecosystem functioning. However, while there is a considerable amount of information on microbial taxonomic diversity, our understanding of its relationship to functional diversity is still scarce. Here we used a meta-analysis of 377 completely annotated and taxonomically different fungal genomes to predict the total fungal microbiome functionality on Earth with all known functions from level 3 of KEGG Orthology using both parametric and non-parametric estimations. The unsaturated model described the accumulation of functions with increasing species richness significantly better (P-value < 2.2e−16) than the saturated model suggesting the presence of widespread and rare functions. Consistent with the parametric approach, the non-parametric Chao-1 estimator that assumes a maximum functional richness did not reach a plateau. Based on previous estimates of fungal species richness on Earth, we propagated the unsaturated model to predict a total fungal microbiome functionality of 42.4 million. Of those, only 0.06% are known today since the vast majority belongs to yet unknown rare functions. Logically, our approach not only highlighted the presence of two types of functions but pointed towards the necessity of novel and more sophisticated methods to unveil the entirety of functions to fully understand the involvement of the fungal microbiome in ecosystem functioning.

Aims. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy and safety of timolol in the treatment of myopic regression after laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK).Methods. We searched MEDLINE, CENTRAL, EMBASE, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and Chinese Biological Medicine (CBM) from the inception to July 2015 for relevant randomized controlled trials that examined timolol therapy for myopic regression. The methodological quality of the studies included was assessed using the Revman 5.3 software.Results. We included six clinical trials involving 483 eyes in this review, including 246 eyes in treated group and 237 eyes in controlled group. We observed statistically significant improvements on the postoperative SE in the 3 months. However, the change of CCT was not statistically different between the control group and the experimental group. There were fewer cases of IOP, UDVA, and CDVA in treated group having significant difference from the controlled group.Conclusions. Topical timolol could be an effective treatment for reduction of myopic regression especially the spherical errors after myopic LASIK. Further RCTs with larger sample sizes for these trials are warranted to determine the efficacy and limitation for myopic regression after LASIK.

Seasonal dynamics of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungal community composition in three common mangrove plant species, namely, Acanthus ilicifolius, Excoecaria agallocha, and Rhizophora mucronata, from two sites in Goa, India, were investigated. In all three species variation in AM fungal spore density was observed. Maximum spore density and AM species richness were recorded in the premonsoon season, while minimum spore density and richness were observed during monsoon season at both sites. A total of 11 AM fungal species representing five genera were recorded. Acaulospora laevis was recorded in all seasons at both sites. Multivariate analysis revealed that season and host coaffected AM spore density and species richness with the former having greater influence than the latter.

The inoculation of strawberry cultivars with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) is a profitable and viable biotechnological tool, with potential to improve the horticultural performance of plants. However, this biotechnology is lacking and unknown to producers. The aim of the research was to investigate whether strawberry cultivars in the absence and presence of inoculation with AMF differ in their horticultural performance. The treatments, delineated in a bifactorial scheme, were four strawberry cultivars in the absence and presence of two AMF-based inoculants. The experiment was designed in randomized blocks, with three replications. The root system of ‘Albion’ cultivar showed the highest mycorrhizal colonization. Claroideoglomus etunicatum showed greater capacity to infect plant roots. ‘Portola’ was the most productive cultivar and ‘Albion’ and ‘Aromas’ produced strawberries with the highest levels of total anthocyanins. It is concluded that the use of mycorrhizal biotechnology enhances the levels of total flavonoids in fruits of the ‘Albion’ cultivar inoculated with the fungal species C. etunicatum. The root system of ‘Albion’ cultivar has greater mycorrhizal colonization. The fungal species C. etunicatum is more effective in colonizing the roots of the plant host. It is suggested to use the ‘Portola’ cultivar to obtain higher fruit yields and the ‘Albion’ and ‘Aromas’ cultivars for producers who aim to obtain strawberries with higher levels of total anthocyanins. ‘Aromas’ is recommended for those seeking a dual purpose (production and quality).

Recently white light cystoscopy (WLC) is the standard method for detection of urothelial cell carcinoma of the bladder. Regarding the problem that on the one hand the sensitivity of WLC is not high enough, and on the other hand it can miss small ‘satellite’ tumors or carcinoma in situ (CIS), other techniques are used. Such techniques are the new imaging by photodynamic diagnosis (PDD) and narrow band imaging (NBI). The both techniques allow very accurate bladder cancer visualization. It is obviously very important to improve diagnostic accuracy and as consequence it increases the quality of resection. Regarding the meta-analysis of several studies, it can be concluded that the new imaging techniques should be applied for a more precise diagnostic, comparing with WLC. Further results of multicentric meta-analysis between these two techniques will stabilize their advantages for concrete clinical indications.
