<p>Tuning the characteristics of granular activated carbon bed (GAC-bed) in household water-filters would be a technique to maintain iron at the required-level in drinking water. In the present study the individual effects of the depth of GAC-bed and the size and porosity of GAC particles on the iron removing capacity are investigated experimentally. A spectrophotometer is used to measure iron-content in water. It is observed that iron removing capacity increases monotonically with the increase in bed-depth regardless of the size of GAC particles. It is also observed that the iron removing capacity decreases drastically with the increase in the size of GAC particles for any fixed bed-depth. Finally the porosity of GAC particles is found to affect the iron removing capacity. The higher the GAC porosity the higher is the iron removing capacity over the considered porosity-range. It is believed that the observations of present study would be useful in adjusting GAC-bed characteristics at the time of designing household water-filters to maintain iron at the required-level.</p><p>Chemical Engineering Research Bulletin 18(2015) 1-5</p>

An experimental study on hydrogen sulphide (H2S) adsorption behaviours using amine-impregnated solid adsorbent (GAC/PEI) was carried out for H2S concentration in the range of 200 and 400 ppm. The dynamic adsorptions of GAC and modified GAC (2.0 and 1000 g/L PEI) in a fixed-bed column were investigated by determining the breakthrough curves and adsorption capacities of various adsorbents. The adsorbent exhibits an excellent adsorption capacity of 106.87 and 231.45 mgH2S/g-adsorbent for 200 ppm and 400 ppm H2S, respectively. The H2S breakthrough capacity is found to relate to the surface adsorption and chemical adsorption.

Multicomponent adsorption of Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb and Zn onto date palm pits based granular activated carbon (GAC) augmented with highly active natural clay at different proportion was investigated. The effects of the initial pH and the adsorbents mixed ratio on the removal selectivity sequence of the metals evaluated. Batch adsorption experiments were undertaken at initial pH 2, 6 and 12. At initial pH 2, both the percent removal and the metals adsorptive capacity decreased with increasing GAC to clay ratio (from 0 to 1) with the percentage removal of Cd, Zn and Cr ions dropping from 68, 81, 100% to 43, 57 and 70%, respectively. At both pH 6 and 12, the percentage removals and adsorption capacities of all the heavy metal ions are higher than at pH 2. Selectivity sequences for pH 2, 6 and 12 followed the order Pb &gt; Cr &gt; Cu &gt; Zn &gt; Cd; Pb &gt; Cr &gt; Cu &gt; Cd &gt; Zn and Cd &gt; Cr &gt; Cu &gt; Pb &gt; Zn, respectively. The adsorption trends were analyzed in relation to point of zero charge and ξ-potential and the metals ions speciation at different pH. These results will help better understand the feasibility of augmenting GAC with natural clay minerals during fixed bed column test which is more beneficial for practical industrial applications.
