Study of Supratrochlear Foramen of Humerus: A Morphometric Study

ABSTRACT This study is conducted to know the incidence of supratrochlear foramen and its morphometry. A total of 38 humerus bones are studied in the Indian population sample, in light of available literature, and clinical, racial, and regional significance is drawn, if present. Materials and methods Thirty-eight humerus bones belonging to the museum of the Department of Anatomy, Rohilkhand Medical College & Hospital, Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, India, were studied to observe the incidence of supratrochlear foramen anomaly in the Indian population sample. Results The supratrochlear foramen anomaly was observed in 7 out of 38 humeri studied, i.e., 18.4%. ABSTRACT Aim The present study was undertaken to observe the variations of the first rib and understand the significance of such variations. Materials and methods Fifty first ribs obtained from the Museum of Anatomy Department of Rohilkhand Medical College & Hospital, Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, India, were studied to see if any anomaly was present and check its incidence in the Indian population sample and draw clinical and other signi­ficances of such variations. Results The findings are discussed and conclusions are drawn. Variations detected include absence of scalene tubercle, vascular groove on the superior surface, rudimentary head and tubercle of the rib, oblique ridge, and exostosis. Their incidence and significance are discussed. Conclusion The findings are of considerable clinical, regional, and racial significance. Clinical significance Structural malformations of first rib are common, and when present may lead to compression of the neurovascular bundle at the root of the neck. Awareness of such anomalies is important for anatomists, radiologists, and thoracic surgeons dealing with this region. How to cite this article Rashia S, Zaidi SHH. Introduction: Foramen magnum is a large opening located in the occipital bone of the skull. The morphometric analysis of foramen magnum is clinically and surgically important because vital structures passing through it may suffer compression such as in cases of achondroplasia, brain herniation and meningiomas. Objectives: To study morphometric analysis of foramen magnum in dry human skulls and to measure its anteroposterior diameter, transverse diameter and foramen magnum index. Material & Methods: 100 dried human skulls of unknown age and sex were obtained from Department of Anatomy, Rama Medical College and GSVM Medical College, Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India. Deformed samples were excluded. Different parameters were measured with the help of Vernier caliper. Results: The mean antero-posterior diameter of foramen magnum was 33.79mm. The maximum antero-posterior diameter of foramen magnum was 40mm and minimum antero-posterior diameter was 28.2mm.The mean transverse diameter of foramen magnum was 28.30mm.The maximum transverse diameter of foramen magnum was 36mm and minimum transverse diameter was 21.5mm.The mean index of foramen magnum was 84.14mm. Conclusion: The morphometric analysis of foramen magnum and its variation is important not only for anatomists but also important to the anesthetists, neurosurgeons, orthopedicians and radiologists ; while planning and performing cranio-vertebral junction procedures.

Introduction: Upper end of tibia is an important component of knee joint. The aim of present study is to analyse different morphometric parameters of condylar and intercondylar surface of tibia, so as to formulate a baseline data for future studies with relevance to Indian population and to compare the current data with previous literature. Morphometric study of upper end of tibia can be used to guide treatment and monitor outcome of total knee replacement surgeries. Material and Method: 30 dried human adult tibia were obtained from Dept. of anatomy SKIMS Medical College bemina Srinagar. Morphometric measurements of medial condyle, lateral condyle and intercondylar area of tibiae were measured with Vernier caliper. Result: Anteroposterior measurements were found to be greater than transverse measurements for both medial and lateral condyles. Furthermore, both anteroposterior and transverse measurements were greater in medial condyle than in lateral condyle.Racial differences were observed. Conclusion: The present study is to provide a base line data pertaining to morphometric details of upper end of tibia in Indian population, which aims to provide help for anatomists, anthropologists, and orthopedics, in knee arthroplasty procedures, and meniscal transplantation

Introduction: Nasal Index is very useful in anthropology and it is one of the clinical anthropometric parameters recognized in nasal surgical and medical management. Nasal index is the most common nasal parameter which may be related to regional and climatic differences so that it would be further useful as an essential tool to the researchers, clinicians, rhinoplastic and facial reconstructive surgeons and forensic experts related to this field. The present study was designed to provide a normative data of nasal index and to classify their nose type and comparison of data with other studies. Material & Methods: The study was conducted on 200 human dry skulls of north Indian population in Department of Anatomy, S.N. Medical College, Agra. The measurements were taken using digital vernier caliper. Nasal Index was calculated by measuring nasal height and nasal width in order to determine the nasal type. Results: In the present study, mean nasal height was 49.25±3.68mm whereas mean nasal width was 24.63±2.90mm. Mean nasal index was calculated as 51.00± 0.09. Conclusion: The findings of our study suggest that according to the nasal index, the studied population of North India belongs to Platyrrhine type.

Abstract A population of a nematode species belonging to the genus Oscheius was isolated in western Uttar Pradesh, India. Morphological and morphometrical studies on this species showed its high similarity with six species described previously from Pakistan (Oscheius citri, O. cobbi, O. cynodonti, O. esculentus, O. punctatus and O. sacchari). The molecular analysis of the ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 rDNA sequences of the Indian population and the six species described from Pakistan showed that all the sequences are almost identical. Thus, based on morphological and molecular characteristics, all of the six above-mentioned Pakistani species and Indian strain do not differ from each other, hence can be considered synonyms. The correct name for this taxon is the first described species O. citri. Additionally, the phylogenetic analysis of the 18S rDNA and the 28S rDNA sequences showed that Oscheius citri is sister to the clade formed by O. chongmingensis and O. rugaoensis from China. The high similarity of morphological and morphometric characteristics of O. citri and other species, O. maqbooli, O. nadarajani, O. niazii, O. shamimi and O. siddiqii, suggest their conspecificity; however, lack of molecular data for these species does not allow this hypothesis to be tested.

Background: Facial anthropometry is the scientific study of measurements and proportions of the human face. There is huge paucity in the metric measurements of face in Indian population. This study is involved in collecting facial anthropometric data of Western Uttar Pradesh population of age group between 18-25 years. Aims and Objectives: This study aims at evaluating predominant facial phenotype, using facial height and facial width of Western Uttar Pradesh population as study subjects. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted on 200 medical and paramedical students of Shri Ram Murti Smarak Institute of Medical Sciences (SRMS-IMS), Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh. The study subjects were of 18-25 year’s age, belonging to Western Uttar Pradesh region. Digital Vernier Caliper was used to measure the facial parameters. The data was analyzed using statistical tool SPSS 16.0 version. Results: In the present study it is found that facial height and width are more in males compared to females. This difference is statistically significant. On analyzing facial index, hyperleptoprosopic face is the predominant phenotype in males as well as in females, followed by leptoprosopic type in males and mesoprosopic type in females. However, gender differences in facial index are not statistically significant at p<0.05.  Conclusion: The current study reveals that facial parameters can be used to determine the gender of an individual on the basis of height and width.

Introduction: In human anatomy the acetabulum is a cavity on the lateral aspect of the hip-bone. The purpose of this study is to record the depth and diameter of the acetabulum cavity to accumulate morphological data helpful for anthropologists, Forensic medicine experts and orthopedicians. Materials And Methods: The study was done on 88 adult human hip bones (42 right and 46 left) collected from Department of Anatomy, Govt.T.D Medical College, Alappuzha, Kerala state. The diameters and maximum depth were measured using digital vernier calliper. The measurements were compared with other studies in the world. The mean diam Results: eter of acetabulum was 48.08 ± 3.21mm, 44.16 ± 2.60 mm in male and female respectively. The mean ± S.D value of depth was 29.11± 2.37 and 27.20± 2.01 mm. in male and female respectively. The correlation between depth and diameter was signicant only in the right male hip bones. There is signicant variation in the Conclusion: anatomical parameters of hip bone between different Indian population groups. The data from this study may be used for designing population specic hip prosthesis.

Background: The aim of the study is to determine the prevalence of thyroid dysfunction in pregnancy and its impact on obstetrical outcome in Eastern Uttar Pradesh.Methods: This was a prospective observational study undertaken at antenatal clinics and indoor of BRD Medical College, Gorakhpur. Total 720 antenatal women, ≤20 weeks of gestation were recruited for the study. In all patients’ routine obstetrical investigations and thyroid function tests were done. All patients were followed up to delivery. Maternal and perinatal outcome were ascertained.Results: Prevalence of thyroid dysfunction among pregnant was found to be 21.1% and subclinical hypothyroidism (15.9%) was the commonest thyroid disorder. Most common complication observed in subclinical and overt hypothyroidism was preeclampsia (9.56 % versus 20%) followed by preterm labour (7.82% versus 10%). Major fetal complications in hypothyroid mothers included intrauterine growth restriction, low birth weight and stillbirth.Conclusions: Prevalence of hypothyroidism was found to be high in our study and was associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes; hence, thyroid screening should be included in routine antenatal investigations.

The aim of this article is to identify the prevalence of posttraumatic psychological symptoms following maxillofacial trauma among an Indian population sample and assess changes in these symptoms over a period of time. Forty-eight adult patients were assessed within 2 weeks of injury with two follow-up visits (4–6 weeks and 12–14 weeks). Patients were administered three self-reporting questionnaires in local language (GHQ-12; HADS; TSQ) on all occasions. Relevant sociodemographic and clinical data were obtained. Forty patients were included in the final analysis. Emotional distress was present in nine participants and five participants satisfied the TSQ criteria for a diagnosis of stress disorder. Anxiety and depression were observed in 10 and 4 patients, respectively. Characteristics associated with abnormal high scores included substance abuse, low education and income levels, facial scars, and complications needing additional intervention. These findings reveal the abnormal psychological response to maxillofacial trauma in immediate and follow-up periods. The use of such screening tools can be considered by the maxillofacial surgeon for early identification of psychological symptoms and referral to the psychiatrist.
