Background and aims – We here describe two new species of Eremitis from Bahia, Brazil, and compare them with morphologically similar species. We also provide illustrations, photos, a distribution map, and notes on habitat and conservation status of the new species.Material and methods – This study was based on fieldwork, analysis of herbarium specimens, and literature review. Specimens collected were analyzed and photographed during fieldwork and observed in cultivation in a greenhouse. The conservation assessment is based on field observations and spatial analyses, following the IUCN guidelines and criteria.Results – Eremitis clarkiae sp. nov. occurs in southern Bahia and has been collected only twice, in the municipality of Floresta Azul. The new species is similar to E. jardimii and E. robusta, both also endemic to Bahia, but can be distinguished by several vegetative and reproductive structures longer than those observed in these species, such as leafy culms, ligules, decumbent culm inflorescences, and pedicels of the staminate spikelets of the staminate whorls. Eremitis vinacea sp. nov. was collected in three localities in southern Bahia, but only the type population was found during recent field trips, in the municipality of Camacã. It is similar to E. afimbriata, a species endemic to Espírito Santo state, being differentiated by its leaf sheaths with persistent fimbriae (vs absent), leaf blades with green adaxial surface (vs bluish green with a blue iridescence), and a single inflorescence on decumbent culms (vs multiple). Both new species are endemic to the Bahian Coastal Forests subregion and should be considered Critically Endangered (CR), according to the IUCN guidelines and criteria.

Two new species of Pavonia subgenus Goetheoides are described (Pavonia gerleniae and Pavonia macrobracteolata) from the wet coastal forests of eastern Brazil. This increases the number of species in the subgenus to 30, which is considered a high level of diversity for arborescent species in this geographically and ecologically limited area. We present morphological descriptions and comments, taxonomic relationships, pictures and conservation status of these species.

Two new species of Sonerila Roxb. (Melastomataceae), S. erectifolia Phonep., Soulad. & Tagane sp. nov. from southern Laos, and S. souvannii Phonep. & Soulad. sp. nov. from central Laos, are described and illustrated. Comparisons with morphologically similar species are presented, along with ecological information and preliminary conservation status. A key to the species of Sonerila in Laos is also provided.

Background and aims – The genus Anemopaegma (Bignoniaceae) includes around 47 species and has its centre of diversity in Brazil. Here, we describe and illustrate a new species from French Guiana, Anemopaegma kawense, and compare it to the two most similar species, A. foetidum and A. granvillei. We further assess the conservation status of all three species.Material and methods – Morphological descriptions are based on herbarium specimens deposited at BM, BR, CAY, INPA, K, MO, P, SPF, and U, and, in the case of the newly described species, also on field observations. The conservation status assessments follow the IUCN Red List criteria.Key results – Anemopaegma kawense differs from both A. foetidum and A. granvillei by its densely villose twigs, longitudinally plicate leaflets with secondary veins not or hardly prominent below, and tertiary veins impressed below. It is further separated from A. foetidum by the leaflets that are villose below and the calyx that is entirely pubescent outside. On the other hand, A. kawense differs from A. granvillei by the densely lepidote outer surface of the corolla, shorter petiolules, leaflets with midrib impressed above, shorter bracts and bracteoles, inflorescence peduncle exceeding the rachis, and pedicels densely puberulous, not lepidote or only sparsely so at the apex. This species is endemic to the Kaw Mountain in north-eastern French Guiana, where it grows in low stunted forest on laterite; it is assessed as Endangered according to the IUCN criteria. New descriptions are provided for A. granvillei, which is newly reported from Suriname, and for A. foetidum, which is newly reported from French Guiana; these two species are assessed as Endangered and Least Concern, respectively. Lectotypes are designated for A. maguirei, which is here synonymised with A. foetidum, and for A. umbellatum, another synonym of that species. A key to the 12 species of Anemopaegma occurring in the Guianas is presented.

Detailed morphological descriptions, geographical distribution, evaluation of their IUCN conservation status and photographs are presented. Comparison tables with morphologically similar species occurring in Rio Grande do Sul and an identification key to the species occurring in Brazil are also provided.

Two new species of Graffenrieda are described from the Amazon rainforest. Graffenrieda maturaca is characterized mainly by its leaves which are dull on the adaxial surface, chartaceous, narrowly elliptic to oblanceolate, and apparently uni-nerved, with only the median acrodromous vein evident. This species has been collected only at Serra de Maturacá, in the state of Amazonas, Brazil. Graffenrieda goldenbergii is distinguished mainly by the pulverulent, whitish, early caducous indumentum of the rachis, pedicel, hypanthium and calyx, by the abaxial surface of the leaves which is moderately lepidote, with trichomes ca. 0.2 mm diam., by the irregularly valvate calyx, and by the membranaceous, costate, not sulcate fruits. This species has been collected in the state of Acre, Brazil, and in the Province and District of Lama in Peru. Both species are illustrated, compared with similar species, and their conservation status is discussed.

Myrcia amplifolia, a new species from the coastal forest of southern Bahia, eastern Brazil, is here described and compared with morphologically similar species. Additionally, a morphological plate, distribution map and conservation assessment of the species are presented. We assign the new species to Myrcia sect. Calyptranthes with a reasonable reliability due to the combination: presence of cataphylls, inflorescences sympodially branching at the base and calyptrate flowers. Myrcia amplifolia seems to be closely related to M. carioca, from which it can be distinguished through the leaf blades strongly coriaceous (vs. chartaceous in M. carioca), leaf venation very slightly raised and barely conspicuous abaxially (vs. venation strongly raised and conspicuous abaxially), inflorescences with a shorter main axis (75–110 mm long vs. 130–270 mm long), and shorter first lateral branch (3.3–19 mm long vs. 48–95 mm long), and the calyptra acuminate (vs. rounded or shortly apiculate). It is also similar to M. boanova, differing by the leaf blades significantly larger (31–60 × 10–20 cm vs. 7–13 × 4.1–5 cm in M. boanova) and strongly coriaceous (vs. chartaceous), and the calyptra acuminate (vs. rounded) and smaller (2.3–2.6 × ca. 1.8 mm vs. 3.5–3.7 × 3.5–4 mm).

This work is part of a larger ongoing study of taxonomy and systematics of Rudgea (Rubiaceae), with the recognition of two new Brazilian species, R. agresteophila and R. hileiabaiana, described and illustrated here. The new species occur in the eastern Bahia State, Brazil, which is a place of high diversity for Rudgea. Rudgea agresteophila is morphologically distinct within the genus, by the combination of thickly coriaceous leaves, flowers with long calyx-tube and fruits crowned by a persistent calyx up to 6 mm long; and is known only from the type locality, in the municipality of Jequié. Rudgea hileiabaiana is distinguished by its coriaceous leaves, up to 30 cm long and round to cordate base, broadly infundibular corolla and unexpanded calyx; and it is restricted to southern Bahia. Detailed data on distribution and habitat, phenology and conservation status of both species are presented.

Isoetes dubsiisp. nov. and I. santacruzensissp. nov., two new species from lowland areas in South America, are described, illustrated and compared to similar species. Isoetes dubsii can be distinguished from other species of the Brazilian Pantanal wetlands by a set of characters including leaves that are long, flexuous and trigonal in transverse section, tri-lobate stems, rudimentary velum, pustulate megaspores of 310‒390 µm diameter and laesurae of the megaspore at least four times wider than high. Isoetes santacruzensis has flexuous, filiform leaves, 0.4–0.8 mm wide at mid length and reaching up to 15 cm long, black or reddish-black sporangia, sclerified phyllopodia and sparsely verrucate megaspores of 320‒390 µm in diameter. We also include a key for species from the Brazilian Pantanal wetlands and Bolivia and spore images for all species that are discussed. Isoetes dubsii and I. santacruzensis are only known from their type localities and they may deserve special attention concerning their conservation status. However, based on our current knowledge on these species and according to IUCN Red List criteria, they are assessed here as data deficient (DD).

While developing taxonomic studies about Connaraceae in Brazil, two new species of Rourea were discovered. Rourea barbata and R. prostrata are here described and illustrated. The new taxa belong to Rourea subgen. Rourea sect. Multifoliolatae and comparisons to morphologically similar species are provided, along with notes on their distribution, habitat, taxonomy and conservation status.

Two new species of Cryptanthus from Bahia State, in northeastern Brazil, are described and illustrated. Cryptanthus apiculatantherus occurs in Atlantic Forest and Cryptanthus brevibracteatus was discovered in a transition area between Atlantic Forest and Caatinga. Cryptanthus apiculatantherus and C. bibarrensis have similar stem lengths and leaf blade shapes, but differ mainly by the stem diameter, width of the leaf sheaths, sepal and petal color, anther apex shape, and length and width of the ovary. Cryptanthus brevibracteatus and C. warren-loosei have a similar leaf blade color and are geographically close to each other, but differ by the number of flowers in the apical cluster of flowers of the inflorescence, length and width of the floral bracts, length of the sepals, connation of the sepals and length of the sepal lobes. Data about the geographic distribution, habitat, phenology, conservation status, taxonomic comments, a distribution map and photographs of the new species are provided. In addition, there are tables included that compare the new species to morphologically similar species.
