scholarly journals TEACHING IN HIGHER EDUCATION: TEACHER TRAINING AND THE CHALLENGE OF NEW INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES (ICT)

In the face of the advance of new technologies that has been occurring and reaching all sectors of society, this article presents a discussion guided by scholars about the changes that are occurring in education. It is important to think of how you can use so many resources available today while providing power changes in the teaching-learning process which until then was seen as something static and conservative. The task of the teacher in the twenty-first century is no longer ready to take the knowledge to the student, but rather has the role of acting as a mediator and facilitator in the process of knowledge construction. The changes that are taking place have led educators to seek knowledge and expertise so that they can perform satisfactorily their role in society.

The emergence of new information and communication technologies (ICTs) has generated much debate both in and out of academia in relation to theories ranging from economic advancement to imperialism. In the context of the ‘low-income’ economies, a dominant discourse associated with ICTs persists. The discourse of development predicts that nations which have joined the global market will use ICTs to harness global knowledge that will enable them to be competitive and therefore attain development. This has led to change in policy from international to local as ICTs are embraced as the next big development tool. Recently however, there have been reports of more failures of ICTs initiatives than success as professionals in the industry complain about unsustainability of the systems. A genuine issue is that so far analysis of this discourse has tended to be economically or technically deterministic, with little attention paid to social and cultural perspectives. In order to understand how the role of norms, practices and politics of people in particular communities play in this discourse in ‘low income’ economies, over 1000 semi-qualitative questionnaires were analysed from five geographical locations in The Gambia. A key conclusion that has emerged from the research is that there are different attitudes towards the ICTs in the different locations, which vary from full acceptance to rejection of ICTs. Such diverse reactions are underpinned by the religion and information ecologies in which gender plays a critical part. This result challenges the ICT4D agenda, and might be applied to reports of unsustainable ICT initiatives, especially in Africa.

The use of new information and communication technologies (ICT) as a business tool has increased rapidly for the past 10 years (Bonsón, Coffin, & Watson, 2000; Claessens, Glaessner, & Klingebiel, 2000; Vasarhelyi & Greenstein, 2003). More specifically, financial software, e-banking, and the Internet, as core aspects of the various technologies used, have become driving forces behind the expansion of firms and the development of cash management. New technologies are considered as one of the most attractive ways for businesses to increase revenue and achieve economies of scale that can reduce unit costs (Ballantine & Stray, 1998; Barajas & Villanueva, 2001; Daniel, 1999; Daniel & Storey, 1997; Deyoung, 2001; Downes & Muy, 1998; Faulder, 2001; Jayawardhena & Foley, 2000). There are different studies about the use of ICT in the management of the enterprise that explain the obtaining of enterprise performance. Brynjolfsson and Hitt (2000) and Nájera (2005) have done a review of these works and a classification of these types of researches. Unfortunately, there are not specific works or empirical researches about the use of e-banking in cash management; consequently, this work is focused in this. The rest of the chapter is structured as follows. The theoretical foundation on which the study is based is explained in Section 2. Section 3 presents the data and the analysis procedure used to conduct the empirical study. The main results of the investigation are shown in Section 4, and Section 5 presents conclusions. The chapter ends with a list of bibliographical references.

In this paper, the authors present a scale elaborated in order to find out towards training and continuum improvement in NICT (new information and communication technologies) of education professionals, since this attitude is negative to them.

Abstract: Introduction: The challenges brought by the continuity of the university teaching-learning process in the face of the measures to combat the pandemic of COVID-19 made the debate on the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) in medical education more important. Several strategies were used by teachers worldwide to continue their teaching activities. Objective: to investigate the strategies and uses of ICT in medical education in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. Method: Five databases were systematically assessed, using the terms “COVID-19”, “medical education”, “higher education” and “students”, in Portuguese, English and Spanish, resulting in 321 initial citations, with 18 final references after applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Result: Four key topics were identified in the literature: (1) Challenges for Medical Education prior to COVID-19; (2) Challenges in migrating to remote education; (3) Strategies to overcome challenges related to the learning environment; and (4) Strategies to overcome challenges related to assessments and exams. Conclusion: The use of ICT in medical education in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic showed to be especially important, with considerations regarding the improvement in areas that were already used, the migration of some more articulated areas and experiences in clinical and procedural disciplines. There was also concern about the impacts of using ICT to replace the in-person presence of students in medical learning environments.

The application of some technologies in the educational field, especially the computer, has been causing this process to undergo considerable changes. The new information and communication technologies (TICs) are beginning to be used in the construction of knowledge. Looking to discuss this issue, this paper proposes to establish a discussion about the use of computers in education; the positive and negative aspects of TICs; and on some technologies for teaching chemistry, pointed out as tools that favor learning in a pleasant and pleasant way. Through the knowledge resulting from this study, it is verified that improving the teaching-learning process, especially of chemical discipline, is not an inherent attribute of the various digital resources available for this, but a consequence that is tied to the way in which they are used. It is the function of the teacher to conciliate all these resources at his disposal to better prepare and teach his classes, always establishing a dialogic and dynamic relationship with the student.

The European Higher Education Area has caused changes in higher education, what involves new adaptations in the teaching-learning process because now the main aim is "learn to learn". The implementation of innovative experiences within the educational context is part of a transformation process where new information and communication technologies (hereafter, ICT) promote the use of methodological tools that contribute to conventional classroom systems, through the creation of virtual training environments that establish the development of audiovisual language and facilitate communication. The objective of the following article is to reflect on the implementation of the inverted classroom as a learning tool for social change that breaks the traditional paradigms of education and represents an option for redesign the curriculum model. It is also part of the Education Research project and Literacy in Communication and Audiovisual and Interactive Arts applied in intercultural contexts for the conservation and diffusion of cultures and ancestral knowledge in conflict or isolation. The study presents a qualitative-quantitative and documentary methodology, and a case of study uses a bibliographic investigation that contrasts the information with the data obtained from the application of data collection instruments such as surveys, and observation; that will allow establishing the appropriate parameters, and discussing the results that show the importance of the use of the inverted classroom in the teaching-learning processes to strengthen resilient, autonomous and meaningful learning, recognizing students as the main protagonists of new knowledge.
