Abstract. This study explored the role of parental family structure, perceived father figure's involvement, and perceived mother figure's involvement in childhood in women's psychological distress in midadulthood. Six hundred and seventeen 28-59-year-old women with secondary school age children from three areas in South England completed the GHQ-12, scales retrospectively assessing mother's involvement and father's involvement, and items on parental family structure, educational attainment, social class (housing tenure), family size (number of children under age 21 in the household), partner status, employment status, and age. It was found that, even after controlling for current sociodemographic confounding variables, mother's involvement and father's involvement were negatively related to psychological distress. Parental family structure was unrelated to psychological distress. Family structure did not moderate the relationship between parental involvement and daughters' psychological distress, and the effect of father's involvement on a daughter's psychological distress did not vary with the level of mother's involvement.

When an individual dies, the role of the family member(s) is clearly prescribed by society: support, presence, caring, and remembrance. Traditionally, the definition of “family” has broadened to create the “extended family” or “expanded family” with members defined by deep bonds, relationships, and friendships. Currently, close friends who become the extended/expanded family, can be as central as kin to family structure and stability. Therefore, when one member of an extended family dies, the death resonates throughout the entire system affecting not only the lives of the immediate family members, but also those in the expanded circle of family relationships. This article describes the relationships in one extended family and discusses the struggles and counseling interventions used when one member of an extended family suddenly dies.

This chapter focuses on the dynamics of Leatherface's family in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974). From the point at which Cook first sees Hitchhiker in the headlights, a family structure is implied and, to a certain extent, played out during the climatic scenes of Sally Hardesty's torture: Cook has taken on the role of the father who goes out to work to earn money for his family, Hitchhiker is the wayward teenager who refuses to do as he is told, while Leatherface is the mother who is stuck in the kitchen and subject to some domestic abuse from her ‘husband’ Cook. Such a dynamic suggests a patriarchal power structure within this family of cannibals. While this power structure is evident during Cook's arrival at the family home, it slowly starts to shift when the family begins their torture of Sally. For the most part, Cook seems simultaneously to be horrified by the acts being committed at the same time as appearing to enjoy them.

Transgressive conduct and opposition towards the rules often characterize adolescence. During the development, antisocial and aggressive behavior could be a way to grow personally and to be independent. According to previous studies results, the family has a high impact on teens’ aggressive behaviors and moral disengagement. Our research involved 2328 Italian adolescents (13–19 years old) who have filled in the following questionnaires: deviant behavior questionnaire; aggression questionnaire; family communication scale; moral disengagement scale; the multidimensional scale of perceived social support. Our study investigated the role of family structure on deviance propensity through family climate and anger dysregulation joint influence. We conducted a mediation analysis to reach this goal using structural equation modeling (SEM). We have also conducted a multigroup analysis in order to evaluate gender differences in the SEM. Results showed that both family climate and anger dysregulation mediated the relationship between family structure and deviance propensity. The multigroup analysis revealed that the indirect relationship between variables through family climate is significant for both boys and girls (higher in females); variables indirect relationship through anger dysregulation was significant only for girls. These data could be useful for prevention and intervention programs on children–parent relationships and to reduce antisociality and teenager’s aggressive behavior.
