Abstract. The PolSAR calibration ensures that the relationship between the SAR observations and the target characteristics on the ground are consistent and resembles the theoretical estimation which in turn improves the overall data quality. Essentially, calibration prevents the propagation of uncertainty into further analysis to characterise the target. In this study, the UAVSAR L-Band data of Rosamond dry lake bed has been calibrated. The calibration of amplitude and phase are carried out with the help of the corner reflector array present in the Rosamond site. The dataset is further calibrated for the crosstalk and channel imbalance using the Quegan’s distortion model. Since the crosstalk distortion model requires an accurate estimation of the covariance matrix, the optimal kernel size for the its computation is selected based on the distortion model behaviour with varying window sizes. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the calibration process has been studied using polarimetric signatures and other statistical measures.

Metadiscourse is a tool for writers to guide and interact with readers through texts. Yet in most student texts, one of the points lacking is the interaction between writers and readers. In this study, frequency and type of interactive and interactional metadiscourse features were explored via students’ research-based essays based on Hyland’s metadiscourse taxonomy. Additionally, the students’ English Vocabulary Profile (EVP), lexical diversity, lexical density, and readability features of the texts in the corpus were scrutinized, which serve as an indicator of writing quality. Finally, the relationship of metadiscourse use with students’ writing performance, lexical diversity, lexical density, and readability was explored through statistical measures. Findings show that following explicit metadiscourse instruction, students’ research-based essays included more interactive metadiscourse than interactional metadiscourse, indicating that the students were dealing with more textual features, such as coherence, than interactional metadiscourse. Apart from findings regarding EVP such as lexical diversity, lexical density, and readability features, a positive relationship was explored between metadiscourse use and writing performance, lexical components, and textual features. It is concluded that metadiscourse should be integrated into the writing syllabus since it has a positive relationship with students’ use of academic vocabulary in their essays.

This paper presents a procedure for estimating discharge in a river cross-section based on the combined use of dimensionless isovels and point velocity measurements. Specifically, taking the Biot–Savart law on the magnetic field induced by an electric current in a wire as their basis as already done by other researchers, the authors propose a new formulation of the relationship characterizing the effect of the wetted perimeter on the range of velocities in a cross-section in order to take explicit account of roughness, expressed by means of Manning's coefficient. Once appropriately nondimensionalized, the isoeffect contours can be read as dimensionless isovels. Assuming in situ velocity measurements are available, discharge at a cross-section can be computed using two different methods. The proposed procedure was applied to six case studies characterized by river cross-sections which differed greatly from one another. The results show that the two methods proposed for estimating discharge lead to equivalent outcomes, and in all the cases the procedure as a whole enables a sufficiently accurate estimation of discharge, even when it is based on a limited number of velocity measurements or on the measurement of maximum surface-water velocity alone.

The research focus was to gain insight into the current employment processes practice and its impact on organizational image in the insurance organizations in Nigeria. The study investigated the relationship between employment processes and organisational image; examined the issues and challenges in organizational image and employment processes. In the course of conducting the study, 80 insurance employees were selected from the chosen 15 insurance organisations and 40 inhabitants in community where these organisations were located; and out of this 88 respondents responded properly representing 73%. The questionnaire was developed by using Likert five scales which consists of different questions on the variables in employment processes and organisational image such as recruitment and selection, job security, job design and responsibility, management style, working environment and job perception. In the study, statistical measures such as Z- test, mean and proportion analysis were used to examine the existing relationship between employment processes and organisational image. The findings reveals that recruitment and selection, job security and management styles have significant effect on the image of the organisation at 0.05 level of sig. while working environment was found to be on neutral level and job perception as well as job design and responsibility were not having significant effect at 0.05 level of sig. on the image of an organisation. It was recommended that there should be sound personnel policy to support job security and the recruitment and selection processes should be transparent, free of biases and fair to all and sundry so as to guaranty trust and confidence.

Background: Accurate estimation of gestational age and fetal wellbeing is mandatory to ensure safe pregnancy and healthy delivery. With recent development in USG, basic scan, Doppler imaging and interventional radiology helped greatly in accurate estimation of gestational age and delivering timely care. The objectives of this study was to determine the USG placental thickness at the level of insertion of cord in antenatal women from gestational age 11 to 40 weeks. To correlate placental thickness with gestational age. To calculate composite gestational age from USG parameters; CRL, BPD, HC, AC, FL. To compare the relationship of menstrual gestational age with placental thickness and composite gestational age separatelyMethods: It is a comparative study of 2 years duration. Total 322 patients were included. Gestational age was determined from LMP. Patient’s routine obstetric USG was done and composite gestational age was calculated from fetal parameters like BPD, HC, AC and FL (CRL in 11 to 14 weeks). At the same time placental thickness was determined at the level of insertion of umbilical cord. The plane of USG image was adjusted so that the thickness measured from cord insertion is perpendicular to the margin of uterine wall.Results: The following parameters were noted: correlation of period of gestation (weeks) with composite gestational age (weeks) correlation of period of gestation (weeks) with gestational age calculated by placental thickness (weeks).Conclusions: Placental thickness can give an estimation of gestational age. The linear correlation and statistical compatibility of placental thickness makes it an alternate parameter for gestational age. Knowledge of correct gestational age helps in delivering proper antenatal care, assessing fetal wellbeing, identifying pathology at the earliest and timely decision of termination and providing safe motherhood.

The influence of sliding surface on SMC design is considered. How the sliding surface affect the chattering frequency and amplitude is investigated by describing function (DF) approach. In part-state sliding surface SMC, the chattering can be changed by feedback state selection. The relationship between chattering types and initial state values is analyzed. The proposed approach is proved has sufficient accurate estimation and judgment by simulation response curves. Simulation curves show that sliding surface design plays important roles in chattering frequency and amplitude.

Nothing great in the world has ever been accomplished without passion. Passion is the strong emotion with inherent behavioural tendencies that can be positive as long as reason underlies the behaviour and this can be either harmonious or obsessive in nature. Thus, this view of passion suggests that adaptive benefits will accrue when individuals are in control of their passion (i.e. Harmonious passion). Moreover Self-compassion is found to elicit increased desirable and productive intrinsic motivation and helps individual perceive any activity as enjoyable or engaging. Thus, the present study adds on as a stepping stone which aims at studying the mediating role of Self-compassion in the relationship between Intrinsic motivation and Harmonious passion by incorporating Correlational research design and maximum variation sampling method (type of purposive sampling) in drawing 120 samples of working emerging adults (experience 0 – 3 years). Standardized tools; Global motivation scale (Guay et. al 2003), Self-compassion scale (Raes et. al 2010), Passion scale (Vallerand et. al. 2003) were used. Statistical measures Mean, S.D, Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation and Meditational analysis was used in assessing the data and obtaining the results. And the findings showed that there was a direct effect of 0.192 between Intrinsic Motivation and Harmonious Passion and indirect effect of 0.2793 between the same in presence of the mediating variable Self-Compassion. Thus, it can be concluded that self-Compassion mediates the relationship between Intrinsic Motivation and Harmonious Passion. Self-Compassion training during the initial period of work or even further will help individuals to develop and experience Harmonious Passion attributing to various positive aspects of individual’s life.
