<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> The National Oceans and Coastal Information Management System (OCIMS) of South Africa is a large, integrated IT system for enhancing oceans, coastal and maritime governance, and supporting sustainable economic utilisation of ocean and coastal resources. This article is a case study, describing how a range of Free and Open Source Software are deployed to generate the Open Standards based core of this federated system for providing decision support applications in addition to data and information management, access and dissemination services. This article demonstrates the importance of modern software development and deployment approaches in constructing the OCIMS core and easing the integration process with other systems in the federation. Finally, this article discusses some lessons learned and reflects on the lineage of OCIMS architectural choices and how these approaches may need to adapt to changing computing environments.</p>

Crowdsourcing and open licensing allow more people to participate in research and humanitarian activities. Open data, such as geographic information shared through OpenStreetMap and image datasets from disasters, can be useful for disaster response and recovery work. This chapter shares a real-world case study of humanitarian-driven imagery analysis, using open-source crowdsourcing technology. Shared philosophies in open technologies and digital humanities, including remixing and the wisdom of the crowd, are reflected in this case study.

This chapter intends to show how companies can benefit from open source software and its development culture and how the open source communities could, in turn, be stimulated and accelerated. One of the first major steps for businesses that plan to act in this context is to accept that open source projects have their own communication culture. After explaining this fact, we illustrate its relevance on the basis of a case study in which an open source framework was used to build a commercial product. The decision-making process and the lessons learned from it point out some guidelines, particularly for companies that offer projects rather than products. As there are, however, more parties involved than just the developers when OSS is discussed as a business opportunity, we also classify the different players in the software business such as distributors, system integrators, and software/hardware vendors. Findings on roles and their motivations and restraints, partially based on a survey carried out within our research project, point up this categorization. The authors hope that this overview of the benefits and pitfalls will encourage more companies to make use of and invest in the open source way to develop and deploy software.

Abstract This chapter presents selected analytical narratives of successful institutional transformation of tertiary agricultural education (TAE) from four African universities. The four universities analysed are Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, Kenya (JKUAT); Gulu University, Uganda (GU); University of Abomey Calavi, Benin (UAC); and the University of Venda, South Africa (UNIVEN). The study examines what each of the universities changed, and how they went about effecting and supporting those changes. The discussion focuses on both 'soft changes' in organizational culture and strategies, and 'hard changes' in enrolments, staffing, programmes, departments, faculties/colleges and campuses. Outcomes of the transformation process are described, along with lessons learned.

Public health deals with promotion of health, prevention and treatment of communicable and non-communicable diseases by designing appropriate health interventions and services to deliver through the health systems. There is a need for robust database on the magnitude of disease burden, socio-demographic characteristics and associated risk factors for evidence-based effective planning and developing appropriate strategies, their implementation, monitoring and evaluation. Although India has vast information available through various large-scale surveys and research studies, it still lacks a reliable health information management system. The available data are seldom analysed to draw meaningful conclusions, to develop evidence for policies and strategies and to measure effectiveness of health programmes. The challenges faced in the survey research are multifaceted, from data collection in the field to its rapid transmission of data to central data servers. There is an increasing trend in using technology, especially computer-assisted personal interviews (CAPI) which is not only expensive but also requires extensive training and information management for transmission of data and its storage. This article examines the application of technology in survey research for efficient data management and to improve data quality. A software called Open Data Kit (ODK) was used for data collection and real-time monitoring of interviewers in field to improve the quality of data collection, achieve desired response rate (RR) and for better field operations’ management. The data collection and field reporting forms designed using ODK act as a significant tool to demonstrate how technology can be used to articulate research expectations at various levels with lower cost and higher efficiency. The research article examines all possible aspects of using technology in Health Survey Research. It aims to introduce further discussion of using technology for field data collection and monitoring.

Effective planning, coordination, and scheduling of the maintenance function can be, and for many years was, accomplished without computer support. However, in these days of high technology and rapid, economical data communication, job preparation is accomplished far more efficiently with the support of a sound maintenance management information system. Fast, flexible access to reliable, current, and comprehensive information is vital if planners and managers are to control the maintenance function on the basis of knowledge rather than intuition. The paper presents a maintenance information management system designed for the needs of the healthcare company. Due to its universality, the system can read information from different sources, appropriately process, interpret and deliver it to the right people in the most appropriate manner.

An evaluation of the feasibility and the requirements associated with a facility-wide deployment of a laboratory information management system (LIMS) at an electron microscopy facility was conducted. 4CeeD, an open-source LIMS, was selected for the focus study. This report summarizes data infrastructure prerequisites, critical and desirable features, and lessons learned from using and interacting with 4CeeD, and broader LIMS adoption recommendations for this facility.
