Echinocystis lobata (Mich.) Torr. et Gray extracts were investigated for their bioactive compounds and their potential for natural antioxidant properties. In vitro antioxidant activity of methanol, ethanol, and water extracts were evaluated by 1,1-diphenyl-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity. Total phenolic content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC) of fruits and seeds were determined. TPC is a fairly constant value and varies weakly both among the different organs of Echinocystis lobata and among the geographical locations of the populations studied. Like other invasive species, Echinocystis lobata is superior to many other plants in terms of the total amount of flavonoids contained in its fruits and seeds. The dried fruits contain more flavonoids than the seeds. Seeds from Slovak populations have higher flavonoid content than those from Russian populations. The results demonstrated that Echinocystis lobata can be a good source of natural antioxidants and have a great potential for commercialization, especially in the pharmaceutical industry.

Antioxidant potential of Rosa L. leaves methanolic extracts was evaluated in vitro using a spectrophotometric method based on measuring the radical scavenging effect on 2,2-diphenyl- 1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radicals. The contents of ellagic acid, quercetin and kaempferol in the extracts from leaves of seventeen rose species were determined using SPE-RPHPLC methods. Additionally, total phenolic content was determined spectrophotometrically according to the Folin-Ciocalteu procedure and calculated as gallic acid equivalents (GAE). Remarkable high antioxidant activity and high total phenolic content (5.7% < GAE < 15.2%), large ellagic acid (EA) content from 9.37 to 19.42 mg/g of dry weight, a quercetin content ranging from 3.68 to 15.81 mg/g of dry weight and kaempferol content from 1.25 to 9.41mg/g of dry weight were found in rose leaves. Significant correlation between EA (r2 = 0.6131), quercetin (r2= 0.5158), total phenolic content (r2= 0.8485) and antioxidant activity was observed. Basing on the studies conducted one may assume that the extracts of rose leaves are a rich source of natural antioxidants and could be used to prevent free-radical-induced deleterious effects.

Antioxidant and free radical scavenging activity of methanol, ethanol, ethyl acetate and chloroform extracts of aerial parts of Lamium purpureum L. was determined by DPPH, ABTS, FRAP and TRP assays. Contents of flavonoids and phenols were also investigated. The total phenolic content in the extracts, determined using Folin?Ciocalteu assay, ranged between 8.57 to 128.00 mg GAE/g d.e. while concentrations of flavonoids in the extracts varied from 24.20 to 39.80 mg QuE/g d.e. The highest phenolic content was found in methanol extract (128.00 mg GAE/g d.e.). The highest content of total flavonoids was identified in the methanol extract (39.80 mg QuE/g d.e.) and the lowest was in the chloroform (24.30 mg QuE/g d.e.). DPPH scavenging of the extracts was determined and obtained IC50 values ranged from 0.12 to 3.12 mg/mL of solution. The values of ABTS radical scavenging activity ranged from 0.35 to 1.80 mg AA/g. The highest ABTS antiradical activity was registered for methanol extract. The FRAP value was found within the range 0.08 to 1.04 ?mol Fe/mg. The best radical scavenger was methanol (1.04 ?mol Fe/mg). In reducing power assay different extracts of L. purpureum showed increasing of activity with increased concentration, and all extracts possessed substantial dose dependent antioxidant activity. The best reducing capacity was obtained with methanol extract of L. purpureum (0.0132 mg AA/mL). The results in this study confirmed that L. purpureum possesses moderate antioxidant properties.

Abstract Preparation process for meniran (Phillantus urinaria) functional drink (MFD) influences its antioxidant activity. This research aims to understand the phenolic content, DPPH Radical Scavenging Activity (RSA), and LDL oxidation of MFD through various preparation processes. Those preparation processes included soaking fresh meniran (SFM), boiling fresh meniran for 5 minutes (BFM5’), boiling fresh meniran for 10 minutes (BFM10’), and soaking dried meniran (DM). The phenolic content was determined with Folin–Ciocalteu, antioxidant activity was assessed using DPPH and TBARS assay with LDL as the oxidation substrate. An antioxidant references in this research used ascorbic acid. The phenolic content in methods of SFM, BFM5’, BFM10’ and DM were 122±0.022, 182±0.043, 192 ±0.03, and 117 ±0.019 mg GAE/g of meniran respectively. Meanwhile, the DPPH RSA of SFM, BFM5’, BFM10’ and DM accounted for 82.18±0.35, 86.19±0.53, 86.75±0.64 and 69.96% respectively. As comparison, the DPPH RSA of ascorbic acid 50 ppm is 75.65±0.82%. At the same time the optimum inhibition of TBARS formation from BFM5’ and BFM10’ methods were 45.83 % and 48.66%, with MDA concentration in human LDL accounted for 38.30±2.39 and 36.30±1.82 nmol MDA/mg protein, respectively. As comparison, MDA concentration in human LDL added with ascorbic acid 25 ppm accounted for 41.35±2.41 nmol MDA/mg protein. In contrast, the control human LDL was 70.70±2.35 nmol MDA/mg protein. This study concludes that the BFM5’ and BFM10’ methods showed the highest antioxidant properties compared to other methods. All methods showed that MFD extract in concentration more than 25 ppm increased the concentration of MDA in human LDL. Therefore, to produce meniran functional drink in optimum antioxidant properties is best by using BFM5’ and BFM10’ preparation methods in meniran concentration of not more than 25 ppm.

Purpose: The investigation of Equisetum ramosissimum Desf. (Equisetaceae) extracts for total phenolic content, potential antioxidant properties, and antibacterial activity against Propioni bacterium acne and antityrosinase effects.Methods: The aerial parts of the E. ramosissimum from Jordan were extracted by maceration and Soxhlet methods, using solvents of different polarities. The composition of the extracts were qualitatively screened using standard phytochemical tests. Quantitatively, total phenolic content (mg/mL, equivalent to gallic acid), ABTS free radical scavenging activity (IC50), anti-P. acne (MIC and MBC), and tyrosinase inhibitory effects (IC50) were also determined.Results: The aqueous-methanol Soxhlet extract contained the highest total phenolic content (0.675 mg/mL gallic acid equivalents). Besides, phytochemical screening tests revealed the presence of phenols, flavonoids, tannins, alkaloids and saponins in the aqueous methanol Soxhlet extract, contributing to the antioxidant (IC50 = 0.125) and antityrosinase (IC50 = 1.125) effects. This extract also showed potent antimicrobial effects against P. acne (MIC = 6.250 mg/mL; MBC = 12.500 mg/mL). Other extracts, including ethanol, water and ethyl acetate, showed lower total phenolic content with moderate and weak biological activity.Conclusion: E. ramosissimum is a promising plant species to be considered for antioxidant, antiacne, and antityrosinase effects. However, further testing (including invivo, histological examination, and highperformance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis) is necessary to understand more about its mechanisms of action. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menentukan aktivitas antioksidan dan anti glikasi ekstraks fenolik bebas dan ekstrak fenolik terikat dari tongkol jagung. Tongkol jagung diekstraksi secara sekuensial berbantu ultrasonikasi dengan pelarut etanol dan aseton selama 60 menit yang untuk mendapatkan ekstrak fenolik bebas. Residu dari ekstraksi fenolik bebas dihidrolisis dengan NaOH 2 M dan dinetralkan serta diekstraksi dengan etil asetat untuk mendapatkan ekstrak fenolik terikat. Ketiga ekstrak tersebut dilakukan analisis kandungan total fenolik dan pengujian aktivitas antioksidan dan anti glikasi. Kandungan total fenolik ekstrak  ekstrak fenolik terikat (EFT), ekstrak fenolik bebas aseton (EFBA) dan ekstrak fenolik bebas etanol (EFBE) berturut-turut adalah 288,39; 100,32 dan 92,95 μg/mL yang dinyatakan sebagai ekuivalen asam galat. Ekstrak EFT menunjukkan aktivitas penangkalan radikal bebas DPPH dan total antioksidan lebih tinggi daripada ekstrak EFBA dan ekstrak EFBE. Sejalan dengan itu, aktivitas anti glikasi dari EFT, EFBA dan EFBE berturut-turut adalah 61,93; 64,42 dan 66,31%. Hasil penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa ekstrak EFT dari tongkol jagung mengandung senyawa yang memilki sifat antioksidan dan berpotensi sebagai anti glikasi. ABSTRACTThis objective of this research was to determine the antioxidant activity and inhibition of AGEs formation of free phenolic and bound phenolic extract from corn cobs. Corn cobs were extracted sequentially assisted by ultrasonication with ethanol and acetone solvents for 60 minutes to obtain free phenolic extract. The residue from free phenolic extraction was hydrolyzed with 2 M NaOH and neutralized and extracted with ethyl acetate to obtain bound phenolic extract. The three extracts were analyzed for total phenolic content and evaluated for antioxidant activity and inhibitory activity of AGEs formation. The total phenolic content of bound phenolic extract (EFT), acetone-free phenolic extract (EFBA) and ethanol-free phenolic extract (EFBE) were 288,39; 100,32 and 92,95 μg/mL expressed as gallic acid equivalents, respectively. EFT extract showed higher DPPH free radical scavenging activity and total antioxidants more than EFBA extract and EFBE extract. Anti-glication of EFT, EFBA and EFBE were 61,93; 64,42 dan 66,31%, respectively. These result concluded that the EFT extract from corn cobs contains compounds having antioxidant properties and potential as anti-glication.

Objective: The present study was undertaken to evaluate the total phenolic and flavonoid content and the antioxidant property of two important seagrass species namely, Halophila ovalis and Halophila beccarii occurring in Chilika lagoon, Odisha, India. Methods: Total Phenolic Content (TPC) of the extracts of Halophila species was determined by Folin-Ciocalteu method with little modifications and the total flavonoid content (TFC) was measured by aluminum chloride colorimetric assay. The antioxidant activity of different extracts was investigated by DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activity. IC50 values were calculated for the DPPH and ABTS methods. Result: The study revealed that the methanol extract of H. ovalis has greater antioxidant activity than H. beccarii. Methanol extract of both the species (H. ovalis and H. beccarii) was found to possess high phenolic content at value of 70.25 mg GAE/g of extract and 48.53 mg GAE/g of extract respectively. Similarly flavonoid contents was found highest in methanol extract for both H. ovalis (76.82 mg quercetin equivalent/ g of extract) and H. beccarii (64.28 mg quercetin equivalent/ g of extract). The antioxidant activity of different extracts of these two species were evaluated using DPPH and ABTS radical assay. The methanol extract of both H. ovalis and H. beccarii showed high radical scavenging activity with IC50 values of 37.77 μg/ml and 52.25 μg/ml for DPPH and 25.62 μg/ml and 45.45 μg/ml for ABTS respectively. Conclusion: The study revealed the potential of the Halophila species as natural sources of antioxidants having considerable commercial importance.

Aim: Golden melon (Cucumis melo) is an annual herbaceous plant belonging to the family of Cucurbitaceae (Cucurbit). This study was carried out to evaluate the phytochemical composition and in vitro antioxidant activity of golden melon seed extract. Place and Duration of Study: The study was carried out between a period of July and August 2017 at Baking Milling Division, Federal Institute of Industrial Research Oshodi Nigeria.  Methodology: The crude methanolic extracts of the seed were tested for phytochemical and antioxidant activities according to standard analytical procedure. The antioxidant potential of the seed extracts was examined using different assays by determining total phenolic content, total flavonoid content, total antioxidant capacity. The free radical scavenging activities of the extract such as 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH)  radical scavenging activity,  in vitro lipid peroxidation, and nitric oxide (NO) scavenging assay were determined spectrophotometrically. Results: The phytochemical screening of the seed extracts revealed the presence of some secondary metabolites such as alkaloids, phenolic, steroids, flavonoids, terpenoids and cardiac glycosides. The total phenolic content of extract was found to be 29.39 mg/100 g while the amount of total flavonoid content was 20.67 mg/100 g. Scavenging ability was observed to increase in proportion to concentration for all the scavenging assays and at the highest concentration of              100 µg/ml. Total antioxidant capacity assay showed 19.44 mg per 100 g. This high scavenging ability in the seed extracts may be attributed to the presence of phenolic and flavonoids compounds in the extract. The DPPH free radical scavenging activity of 100µg/ml Cucumis melo extract was 75.20% ± 0.72 while the reference standard (Ascorbic acid) was 83.24% ±0.31. Lipid peroxidation inhibition ability of 100 µg/ml Cucumis melo extract was 87.18% ± 0.16 while the standard (ascorbic acid) was 94.96% ± 0.16 at the same concentration. Results obtained from this study showed that the nitric oxide scavenging ability of the extract was 80.50%±0.63 while the standard antioxidant was 85.94% ± 0.54. Conclusion: In all the assays, Cucumis melo extract showed maximum percentage of antioxidant potentials at 100 µg/ml. Additionally, golden melon seed possess appreciable amount of phenols and high antioxidant properties which could be explored and incorporated in functional food applications particularly in baked products.

Objective: The combination of two or more plants in a product can improve the nature of the activity of the compounds contained and reduce toxicity. This study was aimed to make water extracts from the combination of Coccinia grandis (L.) CG Voigt and Averrhoa bilimbi L. (AB) with antidiabetic properties. Methods: The water extracts were made by decocting the combination of powdered CG Voigt leaves and AB fruits at various mass ratios (1:0, 1:3, 1:1, 3:1, and 0:1) and various amounts of powdered samples (1–5 g). The process was done in 100 ml of boiling water for 5 min. Results: The results showed that the highest total flavonoid content and total phenolic content of 135.1±0.18 mg quercetin equivalent micrograms d.m. and 48.5±3.09 mg gallic acid equivalent/g d.m., respectively, were found in the sample with a combination ratio of 1:3 (1 g). The antioxidant activity test using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl method showed that the sample with a combination ratio of 3:1 had the lowest value of IC50 (4.447±0.446 mg/ml), which indicated the strongest radical scavenging activity, while the highest inhibition of α-amylase activity in the sample with a combination ratio of 1:1 amounted to 1.086±0.264 mg/ml. Conclusion: In general, all combinations of CG Voigt leaves and AB fruits had the potential as antidiabetic health beverages.

One of the most challenging issues in the food and pharmaceutical industries is finding effective and safe antioxidants from natural resources compared to their synthetic compounds, which have side effects. In this regard, Trehala manna was considered a great antioxidant source categorized as the major type of manna produced naturally and by the Echinops plant in response to insect activity. In this study, the antioxidant activity and phenolic content of the numerous Trehala manna in Echinops sp. have been investigated. Different methods of radical scavenging activity comprising 2,2′-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS) and 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) have been investigated to evaluate antioxidant activity. The phenolic contents were measured by Folin–Ciocalteu and standard phytochemical methods. Quantitative and qualitative amounts of phenolic content, including caffeic, ferulic, coumaric, syringic, and hydroxybenzoic acids, were quantified by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The results indicated the significant changes in the amounts of phenolics and the antioxidant properties in Trehala manna samples, based on the place of collection. Based on results, antioxidant capacity detected by DPPH and ABTS tests showed the IC50 values of 40–94 µg/mL and 28–72 µg/mL, respectively. Results of the FRAP test represented very strong ferric ion reducing activities (0.04–0.83 mmol Fe2+/g). Ferric ion reducing data were not markedly different from ABTS and DPPH ones. These samples also presented the highest phenolic content (1.32–2.28 mg GAE/100 g). Jahrom Trehala manna was the highest in both phenolic content and antioxidant value, while Sabzevar was the lowest. We found a significant relationship between the antioxidant values and total phenolic counts. It indicates that the phenolics contribute to the observed antioxidant activities of these samples.

Objective: Estimation of total phenol, flavonoid and antioxidant activity of various plant parts (leaves, stem, root, flower and fruit) of Ailanthus excelsa Roxb. methanolic extracts.Methods: Different plant parts were extracted with methanol, then the total phenol content was calculated by using Folin–Ciocalteu reagent, total flavonoid content was estimated by using Aluminum Chloride Colorimetric Method and the antioxidant activity was measured by DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical) assay.Results: The highest total phenolic content (48.38 mg GAE/gdw) was observed in flower and lowest phenolic content in root (28.56 mg GAE/gdw). The highest total flavonoidal content (21.5 mg QE/gdw) was found in leaf and lowest in root (1.11 mg QE/gdw). The highest radical scavenging activity was found in flower extracts with the IC50 value of 36.85 µg/ml and the lowest scavenging activity was observed in root extract that was found to be 1493.46µg/ml.Conclusion: According to the results of present investigation the plant showed significant antioxidant activity that can be used for medical purpose for the treatment of various diseases.Keywords: Antioxidant activity, Ailanthus excelsa Roxb., Total phenolic content, Total flavonoid content, DPPH (2, 2- diphenyl- 1- picryl hydrazyl), Scavenging activity.
