Glyph-based visualization is an effective tool for depicting multivariate information. Since sorting is one of the most common analytical tasks performed on individual attributes of a multi-dimensional dataset, this motivates the hypothesis that introducing glyph sorting would significantly enhance the usability of glyph-based visualization. In this article, we present a glyph-based conceptual framework as part of a visualization process for interactive sorting of multivariate data. We examine several technical aspects of glyph sorting and provide design principles for developing effective, visually sortable glyphs. Glyphs that are visually sortable provide two key benefits: (1) performing comparative analysis of multiple attributes between glyphs and (2) to support multi-dimensional visual search. We describe a system that incorporates focus and context glyphs to control sorting in a visually intuitive manner and for viewing sorted results in an interactive, multi-dimensional glyph plot that enables users to perform high-dimensional sorting, analyse and examine data trends in detail. To demonstrate the usability of glyph sorting, we present a case study in rugby event analysis for comparing and analysing trends within matches. This work is undertaken in conjunction with a national rugby team. From using glyph sorting, analysts have reported the discovery of new insight beyond traditional match analysis.

This case study explored how spatiotemporal data can develop key metrics to evaluate and understand elite soccer referees’ performance during one elite soccer match. The dynamic position of players from both teams, the ball and three elite referees allowed to capture the following performance metrics: (i) assistant referees: alignment with the second last defender; (ii) referee: referee diagonal movement—a position density was computed and a principal component analysis was carried to identify the directions of greatest variability; and (iii) referee: assessing the distance from the referee to the ball. All computations were processed when the ball was in-play and separated by 1st and 2nd halves. The first metric showed an alignment lower than 1 m between the assistant referee and the second last defender. The second metric showed that in the 1st half, the referee position ellipsis area was 548 m2, which increased during the 2nd half (671 m2). The third metric showed an increase in the distance from the referee to the ball and >80% of the distance between 5–30 m during the 2nd half. The findings may be used as a starting point to elaborate normative behavior models from the referee’s movement performance in soccer.

Analysis of the course of a match serves in many sports as a tool to obtain feedback for players and coaches. The most common method of analysis in tennis is analysis of game characteristics which is used in the training process both in pre-match preparation and post-match analysis. The results of these analysis, centre on different ages and performance cohorts, are published in a number of studies. At present, special computer software is often used to analyze game characteristics in tennis, eg. IBM Slam Tracker is used on all four grandslam tournaments. Game characteristics processed with this software have been taken into account when choosing 13 game characteristics used in our research. The aim of the research was to analyze the game characteristics of the best female junior players(n = 4), participants of the World Junior Tennis Finals (WJTF) final in 2017 in Prostejov. Based on the analysis of the research data, the differences in the level of the game characteristics of the winning and defeated finalists were determined, then   comparison of the game characteristics of finalists WJTF 2017 and finalists of the women tournament at Roland Garros (RG) 2017 was carried out. In the final matches between Ukraine (UA) and the United States (US), the selected game characteristics were evaluated using the Dartfish 9.0 software. The results of the analysis of the game characteristics showed that the winning players gained more points after first and second serve in both matches. The winning players also obtained more breaks and winners, committing a significantly lower number of double faults and unforced errors. When comparing the level of game characteristics of the winning players at WJTF, it was found that they had a higher success rate of first serve than the RG winner and had a higher success rate in the number of gained breaks. It was found that the RG winner had a significantly higher ratio of winners over a defeated player than it was by winners at WJTF. The ratio of total points won by the winning players versus the losers was higher for the WJTF than for the RG winner, which suggests a more balanced match at the RG final.

This study aimed to understand the way tactical football analysts perceive the general match analysis issues and to analyze their tactical interpretation of the predictive models of conceded goal-scoring opportunities. Nine tactical analysts responded to the semi-structured interviews that included a general section on the match analysis and a specific one on the results of a study on goal-scoring opportunities conceded by a Spanish La Liga team. Following their transcription, the interviews were codified into categories by the two researchers using Atlas Ti® software. Subsequently, frequency count and co-occurrence analysis were performed based on the encodings. The content analysis reflected that analysts play a crucial role in the analysis of their own team and that of the opponent, the essential skills to exercise as a tactical analyst being “understanding of the game” and “clear observation methodology.” Based on the case study of the conceded goal-scoring opportunities, the major causes and/or solutions attributed by analysts in some of the predictive models were the adaptability of the “style of play” itself according to the “opponent” and “pressure after losing.”
