Based on the materials of ethno-sociological and ethno demographic studies from the Soviet and post-Soviet times, carried out by Russian and Moldavian scientists, the article presents a dynamic, socio-cultural image of a Gagauz woman. Different aspects of a modern woman’s life are considered: her life values, attitude to labour, education, wealth, marriage and family. The article also raises questions about religion, ethnic identity, language skills, labour migration of Gagauz women, the transformation of gender stereotypes in Gagauz society. Powerful globalization processes, socio-economic and spiritual crisis, a high level of impoverishment among the population, as well as the pandemic, have greatly affected the worldview system of people. In the Gagauz society, which is now at the stage of transitioning from a traditional to a modern type of society, the most important moral values and spiritual and moral orientations of women have embodied traditional as well as innovative features. The dynamics of the Gagauz women’s spiritual world is strongly influenced by social transformations related to international labour migration that has to a great extent changed the habitual gender roles in the Gagauz family, the existing models and stereotypes of men’s and women’s behavior, their statuses and relationships.

The attention of modern linguistics to the study of verbal representatives of the mental essence (both individual and collective one) of the native speakers involves an appeal to all subsystems of the national language where territorial dialects take a significant part. The analysis of dialect linguistic units possessing linguistic and cultural value is considered as a necessary way for the study of people’s worldview and perception of the world, national mentality as a whole. The ability of stable phrases (phraseological units) to preserve and express a native speaker’s attitude to the world around them is the basis for the use of the analysis of folk phraseology as a way of penetration into a speaker’s spiritual world. Volumetric representation of the external and internal peculiarities of stable phrases allows the author to get their systematization in the form of phraseosemantic field consisting of different kinds singled out in phraseosemantic groups. The article deals with stable phrases of synonymic value recorded in the Dictionary of Smolensk dialects and stable phrases forming a phraseosemantic group. These phrases are analyzed taking into account the semantic structure of the key word, the characteristics of the dependent word, and the method of forming phraseological semantics. On the example of the analysis of phrases with the key word «bit’» and a synonymic series with the semantic dominant «bezdel’nichat’», the article discusses the peculiarities of phraseological nomination in Smolensk dialects and confirms a high level of connotativity and evaluation in the folk phraseology.

Abstract Background International labour migration has become a crucial livelihood strategy, especially in countries where decently paid employment opportunities are limited. Such opportunities come with many potential benefits but also many stressors that challenge migrants’ coping skills, especially when they are in a foreign environment away from their normal support network. This paper explores how labour migrants coped with migration-related stressors using a sample of male Nepali migrants. Methods Qualitative life histories were conducted in Kathmandu among returnee male migrants. Coping responses were categorised based Skinner and Zimmer-Gembeck’s coping typologies. The interview scripts were transcribed in Nepali and translated into English for analysis. Each interview script was open coded and then categorised according to the 12 core coping families. Data were analysed thematically to explore relationships across and within coping and stressors. Results Forty-two men were interviewed who mainly worked in low- and semi-skilled jobs in Malaysia, and the Gulf States. The coping strategies most commonly used belonged to the families of problem-solving, support-seeking, negotiation and helplessness. Men used these either individually or collectively with other migrants. Those who sought assistance from authorities or civil society organisations did not always receive the help needed and there were mixed messages as to when and what types of assistance were available. Some stressors involved multiple coping strategies simultaneously, others described changing strategies following unsuccessful earlier attempts. The coping families of helplessness and social isolation reflected migrants’ limited power in challenging certain stressors. The choice of coping strategies was also moderated by factors such as outstanding loans, language difficulties, or not wanting to cause their family distress. Some coping strategies used led to  new stressors. Conclusions Migrants need greater clarifications on their rights with respect to contract discrepancies, the types of support available, how and from whom to access them once in destination. Improvements to the support mechanisms migrants can access as well as strengthening migrant-led initiatives in destination countries to support labour migrants' in managing stressors are needed. These may contribute to reducing the experiences and impact of such stressors, which may ultimately lead to more successful migration outcomes. As labour migration from Nepal is likely to continue, government and CSOs need to ensure migrants have the support they need to cope with the challenges they may encountered along the way.

AbstractGlobalization and contemporary international labour migration continue to transform women’s lives. Moreover, gender stereotypes, biased cultural norms, biological responsibilities and economic marginalization serve to constrain women disproportionately, particularly mothers. Indeed, globalization and migration increases existing pressures associated with motherhood. They intensify societal expectations of women, and often result in extreme distress. Many transnational mothers suffer in silence with little or no chance to share their stories and be heard. This study explores the experiences of Jamaican transnational mothers in New York City and documents their stories in light of current research which investigates how transnational motherhood transgresses gender stereotypes and pushes the boundaries of gender roles and expectations. The stories shared in this paper vividly capture the women’s narratives of loss, longing, empowerment and shared responsibilities across borders.

В статье представлен сопоставительный анализ инноваций в семейной сфере осетин, их синтеза с традиционными компонентами семейного быта. Особое внимание уделяется особенностям взаимодействия таких институтов регулирования, как обычное право осетин, церковные установления и законодательство Российской империи. Теоретическую основу работы составили концепции ученых, исследовавших проблемы традиционных брачно-семейных отношений, особенностей трансформации семьи в период пореформенной модернизации. Источниковой базой для статьи послужили ранее не опубликованные архивные материалы: судебные дела по разводам, выплатам калыма, двоеженства; переписка Владикавказской епархии с начальником округа; ежегодные отчеты начальников округов Осетии начальнику Терской области. Новизна предопределена предметным обращением к новациям и их конкретным результатам: противоречиям между традиционным укладом семьи и некоторыми трансформациями, например, изменениями гендерных стереотипов и пр. Объектом исследования является традиционная осетинская семья XIX в. с характерными для той поры обычаями и традициями. Своей целью мы поставили выявление особенностей внедрения новаций, присущих российскому администрированию, в брачно-семейную сферу осетин. Следует уточнить, что научному анализу подвергаются отдельно взятые аспекты традиционных норм и установок патриархальной семьи. Высказывается мнение, что именно в семье воплотились наиболее значимые трансформации гендерных стереотипов, что имело свое отражение и в некоторых аспектах этнического сознания осетин. The article presents a comparative analysis of innovations in Ossetians family sphere and their synthesis with traditional components of family life. Special attention is paid to the peculiarities of interaction between such regulatory institutions as Ossetian customary law, church orders, and the legislation of the Russian Empire. The theoretical basis of the work is based on the concepts of those scientist who researched the problems of traditional marriage and family relations, the peculiarities of family transformation in the period of post-reform modernization. The source base for the article was previously unpublished archival materials: court cases on divorce, bride prices; the Vladikavkaz diocese correspondence with the district chief; annual reports of the district chiefs of Ossetia to the chief of the Terek region. The novelty is predetermined by a substantive appeal to innovations and their concrete results: contradictions between the traditional way of life of the family and certain transformations, for example, changes in gender stereotypes, etc. The object of the research is a traditional Ossetian family of the XIX century with customs and traditions typical for that period. Our goal is to identify the features of introducing innovations applied by Russian administration in the marriage and family sphere of the Ossetians. It should be clarified that only specific aspects of traditional norms and attitudes of the Patriarchal family are subject to scientific analysis. It is suggested that it was in the family where the most significant transformations of gender stereotypes took place, which was also reflected in some aspects of the ethnic consciousness of the Ossetians.
