This study tries to examine the influence of work-to-family conflict and job satisfaction on the relationship between supervisor support and the psychological wellbeing of 290 administrative workers at the University of Cape Coast, Ghana. The results of the parallel mediation analysis showed that supervisor support had a significant positive impact on employees’ psychological wellbeing and job satisfaction and also had a significant negative impact on employees’ work-to-family conflict. Moreover, the study found a direct positive effect of employees’ job satisfaction on their psychological wellbeing but did not find a direct negative effect of employees’ work-to-family conflict on their psychological wellbeing. In addition, job satisfaction mediated the association between supervisor support and the psychological wellbeing of employees. The study however found no evidence of the mediating influence of work-to-family conflict on the relationship between supervisor support and employees’ psychological wellbeing. Both theoretical and practical implications were further discussed.

An understanding of politics at workplace is of utmost importance as it is an inherent part of workplace activities. It is evident in processes such as decision making, allocation of resources. This study investigated the effect of perceived organizational politics (POP) on workplace attitudes such as job satisfaction, organizational commitment and turnover intentions. Further, the paper investigated the role of Leader-Member-Exchange (LMX) on the relationship between perceived organizational politics and workplace attitude. The hypothesized relationship was tested on a sample of 228 employees from Indian IT sector. Factor Analysis on POP suggested that variables can be summarized by two factors; Perceived Politics in organizational management (POP1) and Perceived Politics in co-workers (POP2). The findings suggest that there exists a negative relation between POP and workplace attitude. The results show that incase of the relationship between POP and workplace attitude, the part of organizational politics related to management has shown a significant negative impact on organizational commitment, job satisfaction, and a positive relation to turnover intention. With regard to the role of LMX in the relation between POP and workplace attitudes, results of LMX as a moderator have confirmed to the hypothesis.

Today emotional intelligence is increasingly relevant to the success of management as well as employees in every respect, be it internal issues like conflict resolution, group dynamics, leadership and motivation or the external issues like customer relationship management, brand loyalty and corporate social responsibility (CSR). There is limited research on the impact of emotional intelligence on job stress and workplace conduct. The objective of the article is to understand the relationship between occupational stress and emotional intelligence. It also attempts to study the impact of some demographic variables (gender, age, work experience) on occupational stress. Simple random sampling was used to collect data from teaching and non-teaching staff working in universities and educational institutions in Uttar Pradesh, India. SPSS 21 was used for data analysis using statistical tools like correlation, Mann-Whitney and Kruskal Wallis tests. Results show a significant relationship between emotional intelligence and occupational stress. The female employees were found to have greater stress levels as compared to their male counterparts. Age is found to have an impact on occupational stress of university teachers. The employees in their forties were found to have higher stress levels than younger employees. Work experience is also found to have an impact on occupational stress of university teachers. It was observed that employees with a work experience of more than 30 years have maximum levels of occupational stress. Based on the findings of this study, the managers should take special measures to take care of female employees and minimize factors which lead to their stress. The policies and work culture of the organization should create a conducive ambience for female employees. The organization should provide support and counselling to employees in their forties to sort out their stress-related issues which would eventually enhance their productivity. The employees with a work experience of more than 30 years (usually older ones) should get support and any stress-causing issues such as post-retirement benefits should be explained and clarified. This study adds to the current body of knowledge from a theoretical perspective. It enriches the understanding of the relationship between emotional intelligence, demographic variables and occupational stress. The top management of the organization can enhance their organization’s effectiveness by learning from the findings of this study. PurposeThe purpose of this study is to determine the level of job satisfaction, turnover intentions and performance of Nigerian polytechnic lecturers with PhDs and to empirically examine the relationship between them.Design/methodology/approachThis study adopted a descriptive correlational research design. Thus, an online self-reported questionnaire was used to gather primary data from a purposively selected sample of 167 Nigerian polytechnic lecturers with PhDs. Descriptive statistics and PLS-SEM were employed to analyse the data collected.FindingsDescriptive results showed a low level of job satisfaction, high level of turnover intention and moderate level of performance of Nigerian polytechnic lecturers with PhDs. The structural model indicated a significantly positive link between job satisfaction and performance of Nigerian polytechnic lecturers with PhDs. Additionally, further analysis showed significantly negative links between job satisfaction and turnover intentions and between turnover intentions and performance of Nigerian polytechnic lecturers with PhDs.Originality/valueThere is a paucity of empirical studies on the impact of turnover intention on employee performance, particularly in the Nigerian context. This study provides empirical evidence of the negative impact of turnover intention on lecturer performance in the Nigerian context. Importantly, the findings of this study provide insights into the fundamental issues, which underlie the brain drain of lecturers in higher education institutions, especially in developing countries.

The impact of age on the job satisfaction of university teachers A general trend in today's organisations is that they are staffed with older workers. One interesting question, therefore, is whether older workers are more satisfied with their jobs when compared with younger employees? The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of age on the job satisfaction of UK academics. A questionnaire including several demographic questions such as age, gender and rank was administered to 1, 102 university teachers. A total of 554 responses were received, giving a response rate of 50.3 per cent. Using frequency analysis, the overall job satisfaction score of the academics was found to be positively related to their age. A three-way analysis of variance confirmed the hypothesis that age is linearly related to the overall measure of their job satisfaction. Further analyses showed that the age of the academics is significantly related to their satisfaction with teaching, research, and administration and management, i.e. the core aspects of their job. The nature of the relationship is explored. It was observed that the construct developed for ascertaining an overall measure of job satisfaction was more rigorous than the popular Job Descriptive Index.

This research study was conducted to observe the association among the faculty members of the universities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi, their emotional intelligence, job satisfaction and organizational commitment. In the educational settings, the role of emotional intelligence is the most discussed and researched extensively in the realm of organizational behavior. Researchers have also argued the importance of emotional intelligence in academics. Moreover, little empirical research has been carried out to test the relationship among emotional intelligence, job satisfaction and organizational commitment, specifically the teachers of the universities of Pakistan. This study aimed not merely to ascertain empirical evidence to observe the relationship among EI, JS and OC in academics context, but also to recognize its theoretical and useful implications in the context of universities of Pakistan. The results of this study revealed that the correlation exists among job satisfaction, emotional intelligence and the components of organizational commitment: affective commitment, normative commitment and continuous commitment. Hierarchical regression analysis was applied to test the hypothesis, results indicated that job satisfaction positively predicts affective commitment, normative commitment and continuous commitment but emotional intelligence does not predicts affective commitment, normative commitment and continuous commitment. This study concluded that academic managers should make their teachers well satisfied and faithful to their organizations by defining their roles, clear organizational policies and procedures, finest provision of intrinsic and extrinsic incentives and creating sense of empowerment to their faculty members.

The aim of this study was to determine how left-behind children’s perceived personal rejection and emotional intelligence impact on the relationship between their peer attachment and pathological Internet use in China. Using the cluster random sampling method, a total of 406 left-behind children (aging 12.76 ± 2.13) from six rural primary and secondary schools in mainland China were recruited for the study (202 males and 204 females). The results of the analysis indicated that peer attachment negatively predicted left-behind children’s pathological Internet use. Perceived personal rejection had a mediating effect on the relationship between peer attachment and pathological Internet use, whereas emotional intelligence had a moderating effect on the relationships between peer attachment and perceived personal rejection and between peer attachment and pathological Internet use among these children. Moreover, peer attachment had a greater negative impact on the perceived personal rejection and pathological Internet use of left-behind children with high emotional intelligence compared with those of students with low emotional intelligence. These findings reveal the need for more support and interventions aimed at strengthening peer attachment and emotional intelligence of left-behind primary and secondary children and reducing their perceptions of personal rejection, which, in turn, reduces their pathological Internet use.

Abstract. This study investigated the mediating role of coping humor in the relationship between emotional intelligence (EI) and job satisfaction. Participants were 398 primary school teachers in China, who completed the Wong Law Emotional Intelligence Scale, Coping Humor Scale, and Overall Job Satisfaction Scale. Results showed that coping humor was a significant mediator between EI and job satisfaction. A further examination revealed, however, that coping humor only mediated two sub-dimensions of EI (use of emotion and regulation of emotion) and job satisfaction. Implications for future research and limitations of the study are discussed.
