In this investigation, experiments were carried out to study the relationship of solidification parameters and the secondary dendrite arm spacing (SDAS) in A357 alloy casting with various thicknesses under the same solidification condition. The results show that the cooling rate decreases as the thickness of specimens increases, the local solidification time increased, and SDAS increased. The relationships between the SDAS and cooling rate and local solidification time under the condition of furan resin self-hardening sand casting were obtained: SDAS = 20.8 tf 0.3, SDAS = 69.34 v -0.3. The mechanical properties have some linear relations with SDAS of A357 alloy after aging heat treatment. The correlations can be expressed: UTS=410.4-0.8SDAS and El%=7.9-0.05SDAS.

Abstract. The initial density of deposited snow is mainly controlled by snowfall hydrometeors. The relationship between snowfall density and hydrometeors has been qualitatively examined by previous researchers; however, a quantitative relationship has not yet been established due to difficulty in parameterizing the hydrometeor characteristics of a snowfall event. Thus, in an earlier study, we developed a new variable, the centre of mass flux distribution (CMF), which we used to describe the main hydrometeors contributing to a snowfall event. The CMF is based on average size and fall speed weighted by the mass flux estimated from all measured hydrometeors in a snowfall event. It provides a quantitative representation of the predominant hydrometeor characteristics of the event. In this study, we examine the relationships between the density of newly fallen snow and predominant snow type as indicated by the CMFs. We measured snowfall density at Nagaoka, Japan, where riming and aggregation are predominant, simultaneously observing the size and fall speed of snowfall hydrometeors, and deduced the predominant hydrometeor characteristics of each snowfall event from their CMFs. Snow density measurements were carried out for short periods, 1 or 2 h, during which the densification of the deposited snow was negligible. Also, we grouped snowfall events based on similar hydrometeor characteristics. As a result, we were able to obtain not only the qualitative relationships between the main types of snow and snowfall density as reported by previous researchers, but also quantitative relationships between snowfall density and the CMF density introduced here. CMF density is defined as the ratio between mass and volume, assuming the diameter of a sphere is equal to the CMF size component. This quantitative relationship provides a means for more precise estimation of snowfall density based on snow type (hydrometeor characteristics), by using hydrometeor size and fall speed data to derive initial densities for numerical snowpack models, and the snow-to-liquid ratio for winter weather forecasting. In fact, we found that this method can more accurately estimate snowfall density compared with using meteorological elements, which is the method generally used in current snowpack models, even though some issues remain in parameterization for practical use. Transferability of the method developed in the temperate climate zone, where riming and aggregation are predominant, to other snowy areas is also an issue. However, the methodology presented in this study would be useful for other kinds of snow.

Abstract. The publication presents an assessment of the impact of meteorological conditions on air quality in a given location. The subject matter of the work is related to problem-review issues in the field of environmental protection and energy management. The publication draws attention to the fact that despite several decades of ecological monitoring of air pollution, only in recent years attention has been paid to the scale of air pollution problem. The study examined the relationship between meteorological elements (wind velocity, relative humidity on the amount of air pollution immissions. Significant impact of precipitation, atmospheric pressure and thermal braking layer was indicated. The possibilities of air quality improvement were presented based on the measurement data concerning the immission of impurities.

Detailed analyses of hydrological data are necessary in order to prove changes in their character. This article focuses on an analysis of the average monthly discharges of 14 stage-discharge gauging stations in Slovakia. The measured period is from 1931 to 2016. The approaches used are hydrological exploration methods, which were created by hydrologists to describe the behavior of hydrological time series. The methods are used to identify a change-point using an analysis of any residuals, the Pettitt test, and an analysis of the relationship between the mean annual discharge deviations from the long-term annual discharge and the deviations of the average monthly discharge from the long-term average monthly discharge. A considerable number of change-points were identified in the 1970s and 1980s. The results of the analyses show changes in the hydrological regimes, but to confirm the accuracy of the outcomes, it is also necessary to examine other hydrological and meteorological elements such as, e.g., precipitation and the air temperature.

A modified criterion γ’ (=Tx/(1.5Tg+Tl) of glass-forming ability (GFA) for metallic glasses is suggested on the basis of present criterion γ (=Tx/(Tg+Tl) that correlates well with some systems including metallic glasses, some glassy oxides and some cryo-protective aqueous solutions. Results show that the modified criterion γ’ shows stronger correlation with the critical cooling rate Rc for metallic glasses than the criterion γ, which is demonstrated by a value increase in the statistical correlation parameter R2 from 0.9022 to 0.9037. Furthermore, a modified equation is given to reflect the relationship between γ’ and Rc.

ABSTRACTThe variation of ac magnetic properties along the length of melt-spun Fe-based amorphous ribbons was examined in relation to the variations of the roller surface temperature and the ribbon thickness. The results indicated that the lengthwise variation of magnetic properties strongly depends both on the roller surface temperature and the ribbon thickness. The critical cooling rates at which core loss begins to increase were determined from the relationship between core loss and cooling rate. For ribbons cast at lower cooling rate than critical cooling rate, the finedomain patterns were usually observed on the free surface. From the disappearance of the fine-domain pattern and the remarkable decrease of core loss by removal of the surface layers, it is ascertained that the surface layers deteriorate magnetic properties.

The parameters of the birch pollen seasons in Cracow in 1991-2008 were analysed in relation to some meteorological elements and synoptic situations (circulation types, air masses and atmospheric fronts). Two types of the pollen seasons were distinguished - highly dense and less dense. The first type of the season started on the 15<sup>th</sup> of April (on average), lasted 11-20 days and the maximum daily concentration exceeded 500 pgm<sup>-3</sup>. The less dense type started generally earlier (the first decade of April), lasted more than 20 days and the peak days were unstable. In this type of the pollen season, two peak days were often observed. The relationship between the type of the season and the meteorological conditions before the season was pointed out. Additionally, the influence of circulation types, types of air masses and atmospheric fronts over south-eastern Poland on a given day on the number of days with a daily concentration > 80 pgm<sup>-3</sup> was analysed. The relationship between the pollen season type and meteorological conditions before the season was found, among others, the influence of types of synoptic situations and air masses on the number of days with a concentration of over 80 pgm<sup>-3</sup> was established.

The paper considers the main problems associated with the aesthetic assessment of landscapes: the objectivist and subjectivist approaches to the assessment, the relationship between the concepts ‗landscape‘ and scenery‘, the problem of choosing terrain viewing points and viewing angles from a selected point, etc. For the most part, these issues are not yet resolved and require additional research. The problem of choosing the objectivist and subjectivist approach in aesthetic assessment of landscapes has recently become less pronounced since there is a penetration of statistical methods and the search for the optimal ratio of the final results of each approach and their integration. At the same time, the question of what is actually evaluated – landscape or scenery – has not been resolved. An analysis of most works by various authors shows that it is the scenery and its components that are subject to quantitative assessment, and not the landscape itself, which includes both visible components and those not accessible to vision (rocks, fields of meteorological elements, etc.).
