In their philosophical work Ludwig Wittgenstein and Søren Kierkegaard both reflect on suicide as a response to existential despair. While Anti-Climacus, the pseudonymous author of The Sickness unto Death, rejects the contemplation of suicide as an outright barrier to an “awakening” of the self to its own sinful condition, Wittgenstein’s diary notes betray a different attitude towards such thinking; while he largely concurs with Kierkegaard’s characterization of despair, Wittgenstein strikes a less confident pose concerning the possibility of a leap into faith that would all at once overcome any thought of suicide.

A traditional view holds that the self-concept is essentially indexical. In a highly influential article, Ruth Millikan famously held that the self-concept should be understood as a Millian name with a sui generis functional role. This article presents a novel explanatory argument against the Millian view and in favor of the indexical view. The argument starts from a characterization of the self-concept as a device of information integration. It then shows that the indexical view yields a better explanation of the integration function than the Millian view. The resulting account can rebut Millikan’s objections and it has broader implications for the debate on the essential indexical.

1. Introduction. Recently Kaplansky suggested the definition of a suitable Jordan analogue of B*-algebras, which we call J B*-algebras (see (10) and (11)). In this article, we give a characterization of those complex unital Banach Jordan algebras which are J B*-algebras in an equivalent norm. This is done by generalizing results of Bonsall ((3) and (4)) to give necessary and sufficient conditions on a real unital Banach Jordan algebra under which it is the self-adjoint part of a J B*-algebra in an equivalent norm. As a corollary we also obtain a characterization of the cones in a Banach Jordan algebra which are the set of positive elements of a J B*-algebra.

Using magnesium silicate hydroxide as additive of lubricating oils for reducing friction in engineering equipment/machinery has been researched intensively. However, some mechanism relating to the growth of the self-repairing layers on the won surfaces is still not clearly explained. At the same time, using magnesium silicate hydroxide (MSH) in the form of nanorods showed great promise in reducing friction and wear. In this study, surface-modified MSH in the form of nanorods was used as additive of polyolester oil (POE) which was then used for the lubrication of compressor vanes. The sample parts were studied on the morphology and the microstructure of the self-repairing layer in a great depth. The results showed that self-repairing layers with different thicknesses were generated on the worn surfaces when the POE with 1 wt.% nanorods-MSH was used. It was found that the self-repairing layers consist of organic–inorganic composite membranes, and with increase of working time of the compressor vanes, the self-repairing layers become denser and thicker, while their micro-structural form remains to be similar. The situ-repairing capability of the metal surfaces (roller-vane pair of the compressor) enforced by the MSH nanorods is very significant, indicating high potential for industrial applications where boundary and mixed lubrications are needed.

As a novel class of biomaterials, nucleopeptides, via the conjugation of nucleobases and peptides, usually self-assemble to form nanofibres driven mainly by hydrogen bonds. Containing nucleobase(s), nucleopeptides have a unique property—interacting with nucleic acids. Here we report the design and characterization of nucleopeptides that self-assemble in water and are able to interact with single-stranded DNAs (ssDNAs). Containing nucleobases on their side chains, these nucleopeptides bind with the ssDNAs, and the ssDNAs reciprocally affect the self-assembly of nucleopeptides. In addition, the interactions between nucleopeptides and ssDNAs also decrease their proteolytic resistance against proteinase K, which further demonstrates the binding with ssDNAs. The nucleopeptides also interact with plasmid DNA and deliver hairpin DNA into cells. This work illustrates a new and rational approach to create soft biomaterials by the integration of nucleobases and peptides to bind with DNA, which may lead to the development of nucleopeptides for controlling DNA in cells.
