Background and objective: Descriptive phenomenology when used within the tradition of Husserl offers the qualitative researcher a unique perspective into the lived experience of the phenomena in question. Methods of data analysis are often seen as the theoretical framework for which these studies are then focused. However, what is not realised is that the data analysis tool is merely that a tool for which to delineate the individual narratives. What is often missing is a research framework for which to structure the actual study.  Therefore, the aim of this paper is to offer a reflective account of how the empirical-phenomenological framework shaped and informed a descriptive phenomenological study looking at the lived experience of male nursing students as they journey though the under-graduate nursing programme.Methods: A reflective narrative was used to examine and explore how the empirical-phenomenological framework can be used to support method construction within a descriptive phenomenological study.Results and conclusions: The empirical-phenomenological research framework aims to provide a practical method for understanding and valuing the range and depth of descriptive phenomenology, in particular the lived experience. Used in combination with specific phenomenological data analysis models the empirical-phenomenological framework is structured to support the qualitative research process.

Introduction: Marital violence increases during times of war. This study aims to describe the lived experience of marital violence toward Syrian refugee women during the current war in Syria. Design: A descriptive phenomenological research methodology was used to conduct semistructured interviews with 16 purposively selected Syrian refugee women residing in displacement centers in Jordan. Colaizzi’s steps of data analysis were used. Results: Four themes identified were identified: (1) Loss, insecurity, and suffering; (2) Shame and humiliation; (3) Justifying and enduring marital violence; and (4) Ways of coping with marital violence. Conclusion: The Syrian War conflict changed women’s lifeway and created a context for marital violence. Study findings suggests addressing marital violence during wartime and allocating resources to provide care and support of victims of violence in the displaced countries.

Objective: The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore nursing faculty attitudes towards students with disabilities enrolled in baccalaureate nursing programs. Additionally, we aimed to describe the types of accommodations provided to students with disabilities in the clinical setting.Methods: In two institutions of higher education in the southeastern United States, purposive and snowball sampling was used to recruit 14 nursing faculty with experience teaching in clinical courses. One-on-one interviews were conducted using a semi-structured interview guide. Data were transcribed and analyzed using Colaizzi’s process for phenomenological data analysis. The social model of disability served as the conceptual framework for the study.Results: Six themes emerged from the data analysis: ‘Math is a basic required skill,’ ‘You can’t just skip clinical,’ ‘It’s my job to help them learn,’ ‘I’m not prepared for this,’ ‘What type of job will they get,’ and ‘overcoming obstacles.’ Nursing faculty reported positive attitudes towards students with disabilities, but also voiced concerns about patient safety and the ability for a student with a disability to find success. Several barriers including disclosure, lack of accessibility in hospitals, nursing culture, and faculty workload were identified.Conclusions: A lack of clear policies and guidelines leaves nursing faculty unsure of what accommodations are appropriate for students with disabilities and how to implement accommodations in clinical courses. The study demonstrates a need for continuing education regarding teaching methodologies that are effective and meaningful for students with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, diagnosed anxiety, and specific learning disabilities. Further research is warranted to identify appropriate accommodations for students with disabilities in the clinical setting.

One of the aims of human sciences seek to understand the essences and meanings of human experiences by focusing on philosophical, epistemological, methodological, and linguistic principles through transcendental phenomenology and hermeneutics, two philosophies and research methodologies central to qualitative research. Therefore, fusing approaches provides a space where both epistemology and methodology within both traditions can merge to yield meaning and understanding, and at the same time, offer a new approach to dealing with data collection and data analysis without neglecting or distorting original leading concepts. Fusing approaches comes into being as the merging of overlapping and deferring epistemological, methodological, and rhetorical assumptions that a researcher brings into play and actually puts into practice sustaining a purposeful and explicit sense of neutrality to assure methodological trustworthiness. Moved by my sensitivity to lived experience, in this paper, I explicate in a step-by-step fashion the combination of Moustakas’ modification of Stevick-Colaizzi-Keen method of phenomenological analysis and Van Manen’s (1990) hermeneutic approach to phenomenology in data collection and analysis. In fusing approaches, I encourage researchers to generate knowledge and show understanding emanated from both transcendental phenomenology and hermeneutics sustaining a deep sense of neutrality, co-creation, thoughtfulness, and rigor.

Vitiligo is a chronic skin disease, which through change of appearance and body image, exerts a devastating effect on people, especially women. The objective of this study is to explore lived experience of women with Vitiligo by the hermeneutic phenomenology method. The purposive sample consisted of 16 Iranian women. Data analysis followed Diekelmann, Allen, and Tanner (1989). The results showed four main themes: (1) Perceiving myself in a different light; (2) Vitiligo: Worry about others’ perceptions; (3) Vitiligo, Being influenced by cultural beliefs; and (4) Accepting and fighting the disease; Variations in experiences of living with Vitiligo. The women affected with Vitiligo during their marriage-ready years face various psychosocial problems such as rejection by associates, isolation, divorce, and forced choice of a single life.

This phenomenological research explored the phenomenon of nature as healer through the lived experience of wild swimmers at Kenwood Ladies’ Pond on Hampstead Heath (hereafter abbreviated as the Ladies’ Pond). Five semi-structured interviews were conducted to explore the experience of women who swim there. Five key themes emerged from the data analysis. These were: nature through wild swimming; perception of the place through wild swimming; the physical and psychological benefits of wild swimming; descriptive feeling benefits through wild swimming; and healing through wild swimming. These themes were explored in relation to relevant literature. A textural description was then written to describe the essence of experiences through wild swimming, along with identifying limitations in the research and further considerations.

We explored the lived experiences of pregnant women during the COVID-19 pandemic to better understand their experience of pregnancy so that better support could be provided.MethodsWe used a descriptive phenomenological approach to understand the lived experience of pregnant women in COVID-19 pandemic. We collected data using a purposive sampling method through in-depth interviews in cyberspace with a semi-structured questionnaire. We used Colaizzi’s seven-step content analysis method to analyze the research data with the help of MAXQDA software version 2020.ResultsWe conducted this descriptive phenomenology study on 19 pregnant women in a period between the 10th to the 20th of May, 2020. The participating women were already pregnant when the first signs of the epidemic appeared in the country and at the time of the interview. We acquired four themes including disruption of the tranquility and regular routines of daily life, new challenges caused by the epidemic, resilience and strength in facing the crisis, and adaptation with new conditions.ConclusionsThe psychological condition of women has deteriorated during the COVID-19 epidemic. The general mobilization the health system is necessary for alleviating pregnant women's difficulties in situations like the COVID-19 epidemic. Planning to establish virtual training classes, virtual counseling, and creating a safe and supportive community environment are among the most effective ways to enhance the peace and tranquility of pregnant women.

Abstract The Black community has a long, well-documented history of being disproportionately harassed by law enforcement. While psychological research has studied this phenomenon, more in-depth research on Black men’s lived-experience of police harassment is needed. This qualitative study used descriptive phenomenology to investigate Black men’s experience of being harassed by law enforcement officers. An analysis of non-structured interviews with a sample of four participants revealed several essential aspects of this experience, including: anxiety in response to the initial awareness of law enforcement’s presence, fear and confusion in response to abrupt escalation of aggression and hostility by officers, a sense of humiliation in response to degrading police tactics, anger over inability to pursue redress through the justice system, ongoing negative emotion, and a sense of having been psychologically harmed by the harassment. The implications of the findings are discussed.

The purpose of this phenomenological study is to explore the experience of caring for individuals and families left homeless and then displaced in the aftermath of destructive hurricanes. The nursing situations, which are reflective stories from the practice of seven undergraduate nursing students, were interpreted to uncover the meaning of caring for others who have experienced disastrous situations. The interpreted findings are three thematic threads that cut across all the texts: building connections to others, appreciating the wholeness of persons, and learning the meaning of caring in nursing. The wholeness of this inquiry is presented using a metaphor to describe the fullness of lives lived, despite being left homeless and displaced by disastrous hurricanes.
