The durability (chemical resistence) of the Portland cement (OPC), belite cement (BC) and the optimum belite cement (B4), which their physical and chemo/mechanical properties were perviously investigated in Part I, against 4 % MgSO4 and 4% MgCl2 solutions up to 12 months in terms of compressive strength, total sulfate and total chloride was evaluated and studied. Results showed that the optimum belite cement (B4) containing 15 % High pulverized fly ash (HPFA) and 5 % Silica fume (SF) could be resisted up to 6 months, while that of BC could be withstood only up to 5 months, and the OPC could not resist more than three months of immersion in 4% MgSO4 solution. The compressive strength values exhibited by the samples immesed in sulfate solution at 3, 5 and 6 months of immersion were 83.81, 76.38 and 91.13 MPa, respectively. The same trend was displayed when the same samples were exposed to 4% MgCl2 solution. The compressive strength values exhibited by the same samples exposed to chloride solution at 3, 5 and 6 months of immersion were 84.49, 82.23 and 93.32 MPa, respectively. The total sulfate and chloride contents were enhanced with immesion time up to 12 months, but their values were the minimum with B4 and the maximum with OPC, while with BC were the medium. The optimum cement batch (B4) achieved the highest resistance where it recorded the lowest values for sulfate and chloride ions, but the OPC exhibited the lowest resistance where it recorded the highest values of sulfate and chloride contents at all immersion ages till 12 months.

This study was performed to evaluate the effects of micropowders content on the compressive strength of cement-based composite pastes. Granular ground blast slag (GGBS), grade I fly ash (FAI), ultra fine fly ash (UFA) and silica fume (SF) were selected as the micropowders. The compressive strength was tested after 3d, 7d and 28d curing. Results show that the paste containing both UFA and SF has the highest packing density and corresponding excellent compressive strength. The higher the packing density is, the better the compacting and filling effect of micropowders will be, which contributes to developing higher compressive strength of cement-based pastes.

This paper reports the drying shrinkage and compressive strength results of cement pastes with fly ash and silica fume. In this study, Portland cement (PC) was used as the basic cementitious material. Fly ash (FA) and silica fume (SF) were used as cement replacement materials at levels of 0%, 5%, 10%, and 15% , 40%, 35%, 25%, and 15% by weight of the total cementitious material, respectively. The water/cement (PC + FA + SF) ratios (w/c) was 0.28 by weight. The samples produced from fresh pastes were demoulded after a day; then they were cured at 20 ±1°C with 50 ± 3% relative humidity (RH) until the samples were used for drying shrinkage and compressive strength measurement at various ages. The results show that drying shrinkage and compressive strength increase with increasing SF content, and the optimum composition of blended cement pastes is the cement paste with 30% fly ash and 10% silica fume, which possesses lower drying shrinkage values than that of plain cement paste and higher early age strength than that of blended cement pastes with fly ash. Furthermore, a linear relationship is established between compressive strength and drying shrinkage. By comparing the development of compressive strength and the drying shrinkage deformations, it appears possible to predict the drying shrinkage according to the acquired compressive strength.

Physical, chemical and mechanical properties of high belite cement (HBC) blended with high pulverized fly ash (HPFA) with stable ratio of silica fume (SF) in comparison with Portland cement (OPC) were investigated. Results showed that the water of consistency and setting times (Initial and final) tended to increase with the increase of HPFA content. The bulk density and compressive strength were also improved and enhanced with the increase of HPFS content at all hydration times, but only up to 15 % HPFA, and then decreased with further increase.  However, the total porosity slightly decreased, but started to increase with further increase of >15 % HPFA. The free lime content of the pure OPC and HBC gradually were increased as the hydration times progressed up to 90 days, while those of blended cements increased only up to 7 days and then decreased onward. The results were confirmed by measuring the heat of hydration and ultrasonic pulse velocity for the optimum cement pastes comparing with those of both OPC and HBC. The heat of hydration of the optimum cement pastes was decreased at all hydration times and become lower than those of OPC and HBC. The ultrasonic pulse velocity test (USPV) proved that the uniformity and quality of the matrix of the hardened cement pastes are good with no cracks.

In recent years, sustainability and environmental effect of concrete became the main concern. Substituting cement with the other cementitious material without decreasing mechanical properties of a mixture could save energy, reduce greenhouse effect due to mining, calcination and limestone refining. Therefore, some industrial by-products such as fly ash, silica fume, and Ground Iron Blast Furnace Slag (GIBFS) would be used in this study to substitute cement and aggregate. This substitution would be applied on the porous concrete mixture to minimize the environmental effect. Slag performance will be optimized by trying out variations of fly ash, silica fume, and slag as cement substitution material in mortar mixture. The result is narrowed into two types of substitution. First, reviewed from the fly ash substitution effect on binder material, highest compressive strength 16.2 MPa was obtained from mixture composition 6% fly ash, 3% silica fume and 17% grinding granular blast-furnace slag. Second, reviewed from slag types as cement substitution and silica fume substitution, highest compressive strength 15.2 MPa was obtained from mortar specimens with air-cooled blast furnace slag. It composed with binder material 56% Portland composite cement, 15% fly ash, 3% silica fume and 26% air-cooled blast furnace slag. Considering the cement substitution, the latter mixture was chosen.

Fly ash (FA) can be used in cement mixtures with certain limitations. The problem of the mentioned mixtures lies in the insufficient activity of the particles of FA in the reactions which are important for the establishment of the mechanical characteristics of cement. This is particularly true for the hydration reactions. As a result of this, cement pastes formed by mixing ash and clinker have worse characteristics compared to those of pure Portland cement (PC), especially in the early period of setting. As is well known, FA can be a good solution for the neutralization of the negative effects generated due to the creation of free Ca(OH)2 during the hydration of PC, provided that the problems with the low activity of FAare overcome. For the experiments in this study, a mixture of Portland cement and fly ash was used, the content of ash in the mixture being 30 % and 50 %. Mechanical activation was performed in a vibrating ring mill. The goal of this study was to demonstrate, through experimental results, that during the mechanical activation of a PC and FA mixture, the components in the mixture which mostly affect the direction, rate and range of hydration reactions occurring in the mixture had been activated. The values of the compressive strength of the activated and non-activated mixtures and the changes of their specific surface area proved that during the grinding process, the mixture PC+FA had been mechanically activated. The highest increase of compressive strength was achieved in the early period of setting, which indicates an improvement in the early hydration of the mixture. XRD, DTA and TG analyses showed that the alite (C3S) and belite (C2S) from the PC and a part of the fly ash were activated. .


The investigative studies on mechanical performance & behaviour, of Geopolymer Concrete (GPC) before and after the exposure to elevated temperatures (of 200 0 C -1000 0 C with an increment of 100 0 C). Indicate that the GPC Specimens Exhibited better Compressive strength at higher temperatures than that of those made by regular OPC Concrete with M30 Grade. The chronological changes in the geopolymeric structure upon exposure to these temperatures and their reflections on the thermal behaviour have also been explored. The SEM images indicate GPC produced by fly ash , metakaolin and silica fume, under alkaline conditions form Mineral binders that are not only non-flammable and but are also non-combustible resins and binders. Further the Observations drawn disclose that the mass and compressive strength of concrete gets reduced with increase in temperatures.


This paper aimed to investigate the mechanical characteristics of HSC of M60 concrete adding 25% of fly ash to cement and sand and percentage variations of silica fumes 0%,5% and 10% to cement with varying sizes of 10mm,6mm,2mm and powder of granite aggregate with w/c of 0.32. Specimens are tested for compressive strength using 10cm X 10cmX10cm cubes for 7,14,28 days flexural strength was determined by using 10cmX10cmX50cm beam specimens at 28 days and 15cm diameter and 30cm height cylinder specimens at 28 days using super plasticizers of conplast 430 as a water reducing agent. In this paper the experimental set up is made to study the mechanical properties of HSC with and without coarse aggregate with varying sizes as 10mm, 6mm, 2mm and powder. Similarly, the effect of silica fume on HSC by varying its percentages as 0%, 5% and 10% in the mix studied. For all mixes 25% extra fly ash has been added for cement and sand.
