The article is devoted to the place of J. Grimm's «German grammar» among school German grammar books of the XIX century Germany. The work that appeared at the beginning of the century opened a new page in the history of linguistics – the development of comparative historical language study and the formation of linguistics as a science. The paper provides information on some of the most important German grammar textbooks in Germany of the XIX century, used in secondary schools. They were grammar books by J. Ch. Gottsched, J. Ch. Adelung, J. Ch. A. Heyse, J. G. Radlof, S. G. A. Herling, F. J. Schmitthenner, M. W. Götzinger, etc. The author of the article compares J. Grimm's «German grammar» with the above-mentioned grammar works of that time and puts forward a hypothesis that in the XIX century Germany there appeared an opposition between scientific approach to grammar and that of school grammar books, which, according to the author, reflects dramatically different goals set by both sides. Unlike school textbooks which task is to consistently initiate students into the system of their native language, often on the basis of the matrix created by Alexandrian grammarians, scientific grammar is based on the results of linguistic research and seeks to answer questions about language phenomena. J. Grimm rejected any normative grammar based on logics, that resulting in the aversion on the part of the pedagogical community. Nevertheless, the publication of «German grammar» resulted in appearance of German language textbooks the writers of which tried to build their work on the basis of Grimm’s work, thereby contributing to the popularization of the ideas of the great linguist both among the pedagogical community and the students (A. F. H. Vilmar and K. A. J. Hoffmann).

This study examined the effect of mathematics language on students’ interest in statistics in senior secondary school. The study employed quasi-experimental design of non-randomized pretest posttest control group type. Two research questions and two hypotheses guided the study. The sample of this study consisted of 250 Senior Secondary Two (SS2) students chosen out of the target population of 1250 students in all the 10-government grant aided secondary schools in Abuja Municipal Area Council. The sample comprised 125 male and 125 female students.  In each of the four sampled secondary schools, intact classes were used. Two sets of lesson plans on the topics under study were developed for the experimental and control groups respectively. Data were collected using Statistics Interest Inventory (SII). Research questions were answered using means and standard deviations while T-test was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 alpha level of significance. The reliability coefficient is 0.88. From the research work, it was found out that the mathematical language when properly used improves students’ interest in Statistics and that gender has no significance difference in achievement. The study recommends among others that mathematics teachers should use the mathematical language instruction in teaching Statistics and other topics in mathematics to enhance students’ interest.

AbstractThe article shows how the topic of dictionaries can be dealt with in German language teaching and how this subject has the potential to acquaint learners with a descriptive and data-driven perspective on language. The project Denkwerk, realized as cooperation among the Institute for German Language, the University of Mannheim and two regional secondary schools, fostered the students’ intellectual curiosity and their interest in discovering linguistic details. Using empirical methods like corpus analysis, pupils learned both how to write wiki-based dictionary articles on their own and how to publish them in the Denktionary, the dictionary of the project. Our contribution describes the didactic and organisational framework of the project, its aims and contents, its schedule of events, as well as the structure of dictionary articles in the Denktionary, and the observed advantages of such a wikibased system.

This paper presents an approach of how student-created dramatic reenactments and improvisational renditions of the German film Run Lola Run (Lola rennt, Tom Tykwer 1998) can serve as important vehicles to foster transcultural and communicative, student-centered competence in intermediate German language instruction, based on successful implementation in two intermediate college German courses. By performing improvised scenes, inspired by key scenes of the film, students learn to closely interpret and engage with the film’s themes and motifs beyond the meta-textual level, while sharpening their mastery of situational vocabulary, cultural nuance, and linguistic structures of the German language. This film in particular, with its focus on repetition and variation, offers especially suitable material for facilitating students’ awareness of language as a tool with which to access imaginative and interpretative potentials, as well as to express integral aspects of culture itself. The approach presented here also includes suggested materials, methods, and ideas to enhance understanding on the textual and performative levels and incorporate at the intermediate level of the curriculum, particularly for the Independent User level (B1 and B2)2 who has a basic grasp of the German language yet desires to develop greater linguistic flexibility and aptitude.

The article focuses on the fact that the German language learning by pupils in secondary schools of Ukraine depends on creating the appropriate objective conditions of reforming the entire education system and the humanization of the educational process, and taking into account patterns of theory and practice development in this area in the second half of the XX – XXI century.In the article the urgency of modernization of modern content and methods of studying the German language by pupils of secondary schools of Ukraine, made historical – pedagogical analysis of German education in the second half of the XX – XXI century.Particular attention is paid to aspects of leading scientific discourses in the context of national development policy of the German language learning in schools of Ukraine in measurements of its accession to the common European educational space.Article updated those tasks whose solution it entirety provides: 1) upgrading the content of German education at an angle to ensure his child centrism, culture centrism, fundamental and personal-developmental orientation; 2) mobility of updating curricula, textbooks and teaching aids, by raising the level of motivation of teachers, representatives of various government agencies of Ukraine, establishing constructive cooperation between them; 3) improvement in the status of Ukraine in a sphere of German-language education and foreign language education in general (necessary aspects of creating multilingual educational environment).It is emphasized the need for Ukraine of the positive experience in the past in order to develop foreign language education space. This current state of quality of the German language learning depends on identifying further ways of development strategies that are based on national educational traditions and values, experience learning the German language acquired in the process of learning German in the schools in Ukraine. Innovative approaches of content and methodology of the study of German by pupils at schools of Ukraine has a strategic nature and consistent with the national development strategy of foreign language education.The necessity of solving the actual problems posed present to the German- education of pupils in secondary schools in Ukraine is impossible without understanding key trends of research in this area, adequate and interested attitude to the industry by professionals and especially representatives of various government agencies of Ukraine with setting up constructive cooperation between them, which is a prerequisite for the formation of social consciousness of pupils and school leavers with appropriate attitude to the prospects of the German language.Conclusions regarding changes of German national policy in the context of its compliance with the European promotion of Ukraine, development of strategies of the German language learning in secondary schools of Ukraine are viewed in the article.

The demise of German as a pervasive language for 300 years in the United States is due to historical and demographic reasons. Creating an awareness of Germany as an important country and strengthening the role of German teaching has gained advocates in educational and political circles in Germany as well as in the United States. Less understood and supported is the situation of German as a heritage language,despite a multitude of native German speakers who reside in the United States, in part due to global economic needs and who continue to be attracted to German as a language of use. This article describes the work of private German language schools to develop language proficiency, opportunities to use German, and a desire to speak it,and pleads for more research on German as a heritage language and interest in German language conservation.Although Austria and Switzerland also contribute to the preservation of their culture and language abroad by maintaining schools, cultural forums, etc., this article will focus primarily on Germany’s efforts to develop German language instruction in the U.S.
