The key aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of the student-centric Integrated Teaching and Learning Model Using Assessment (ITLMUA) to enhance the effectiveness, efficiency and quality of student learning and teaching in a Clinical Technology programme. The ITLMUA provides a pragmatic theoretical framework for developing and enhancing perceptions and conceptions of pedagogics and associated educational and psychological theories, particulary assessment information to review, reflect and improve educational constructs of teaching, learning, assessment and educational research. The efficacy of ITLMUA uses effectiveness, usability and participants’ satisfaction as the key criteria in evaluating the impact of ITLMUA on the quality of student learning. The ITLMUA’s efficacy is judged in terms of participants finding it academically beneficial, valuable, suitable, useful and meaningful to instructional strategies and practices in higher education (HE). The motivation for the study is premise on lecturers’ adherence to conventional instructional strategies and practices and lack of instructional model that guides and measures the effectiveness and the quality of student learning and teaching. Increased workloads and superfluity of academic gatherings are some of the factors that exacerbate adherence to conventional instructional practices, including lack of academic qualification to understand the princples of educational practice in HE. This study promote and encourage integrated, authentic, dynamic and innovative instructional practices that demonstrate theoretical interest and practical relevance, such as active learning (AL) that is underpinned by learning theories and pedagogical principles. Furthermore, the study analyzed and identified some of the implementation challenges in introducing the integrated instructional model in a conventional learning environment in order to justify how and why it is imperative to adopt an integrated performance-based instructional model in the face-to-face (F2F) learning environment. The study proposed to provide an instrument that can be utilized to enhance the quality of student learning and teaching. The integrated instructional model can assist lecturers to reflect on their pedagogical practices with the intention of enhancing their subsequent pedagogical practices and strategies. The theoretical and conceptual framework of ITLMUA offered the lecturers an opportunity to integrate conventional and contemporary instructional practices. These frameworks have previously been underpinned by learning theories and pedagogical principles to enhance the quality of learning and teaching. Design-based research (DBR) methodology was utilized as it offered a systematic, flexible methodology that is theory-driven, and involves contextually-sensitive design principles and theories of the learning environment. It also offers the opportunity to review and redesign the ITLMUA as the research process develops, and new theoretical and conceptual framework information emerges. In addition, the DBR integrates research, design and practice into a single useful process which results into a usable product that is supported by a theoretical framework. Active learning is one of the teaching strategies that is supported and promoted by this study to improve quality learning and teaching in order for students to comply with and satisfy the academic quality standards and learning outcomes expected of them. This is can be achieved through meaningful engagement and active involvement in academic activities that promote critical analytical skills and competencies through collaborative and cooperative learning, and within a structured, supportive and facilitated learning environment. The learning environment should be characterized by student-centered and lecturer-facilitated instructional practices such as active learning teaching strategies. To enhance the quality of learning and teaching, lecturers attempt to match and modify their teaching strategies to accommodate the wide range of students in their classes, all of whom have different needs and expectations. Qualitative and quantitative research methods were used to gather data. Data analysis techniques included content analysis, the constant comparative method, factor analysis (FA) to reduce data in order to correlate and relate variables to components. Cronbach’s alpha was used to determine reliability of items. The study has demonstrated the utility, usability and efficacy of the ITLMUA as indicated, in the main, by participants’ satisfaction with the instructional model. The study reports on some of the enablers and barriers in the implementation and evaluation of the integrated instructional model and articulated the lessons that have been learned in this academic journey.

We welcome you to the first edition of JUTLP for 2008. This special edition is focussed on meeting the needs of practice through an examination of changes in assessment at the institutional, faculty, course and subject level. The Special Edition was prompted by a roundtable 'Assessing student learning: Using interdisciplinary synergies to develop good teaching and assessment practice' in Sydney on Tuesday 6th September, 2007 sponsored by the Carrick Institute (now renamed the Australian Learning and Teaching Council). The forum hosted 45 people from around Australia and New Zealand to discuss strategies for improving assessment in the higher education sector. Participants, and those who expressed an interest in the Forum, were invited to develop papers and submit them for consideration in this special issue.

The background of this research is the lack of students' mathematics learning outcomes. Thelow yield caused by the learning of mathematics teaching is so very boring, monotonous,stressful and meaningless. Departing from the problems that occur in the field, especially ingrade IV SDN 002 Bagan Besar then there needs to be a strategy that can provide learningmathematics is expected to show active learning, creative, effective and fun. This research istindaan class (PTK), instrument collecting data observation and test learning outcomes. Theresults obtained: Increased activity of the students from the first cycle to the second cycle arevery significant. The increase in active learning, creative, and fun efekif the students alsofollowed by an increase in student learning outcomes. This is evidenced by the increase in thelearning outcomes of the first cycle to the second cycle. Namely, from the average value of 88,27 (cycle I) increased to an average value of 97, 59 (cycle II).

The prediction of student academic performance has drawn considerable attention in education. However, although the learning outcomes are believed to improve learning and teaching, prognosticating the attainment of student outcomes remains underexplored. A decade of research work conducted between 2010 and November 2020 was surveyed to present a fundamental understanding of the intelligent techniques used for the prediction of student performance, where academic success is strictly measured using student learning outcomes. The electronic bibliographic databases searched include ACM, IEEE Xplore, Google Scholar, Science Direct, Scopus, Springer, and Web of Science. Eventually, we synthesized and analyzed a total of 62 relevant papers with a focus on three perspectives, (1) the forms in which the learning outcomes are predicted, (2) the predictive analytics models developed to forecast student learning, and (3) the dominant factors impacting student outcomes. The best practices for conducting systematic literature reviews, e.g., PICO and PRISMA, were applied to synthesize and report the main results. The attainment of learning outcomes was measured mainly as performance class standings (i.e., ranks) and achievement scores (i.e., grades). Regression and supervised machine learning models were frequently employed to classify student performance. Finally, student online learning activities, term assessment grades, and student academic emotions were the most evident predictors of learning outcomes. We conclude the survey by highlighting some major research challenges and suggesting a summary of significant recommendations to motivate future works in this field.

Abstract Introduction Conceptions of learning and teaching refer to what faculty think about teaching effectiveness. Approaches to teaching refer to the methods they use to teach. Both conceptions and approaches range from student-centered/learning-focused (active learner engagement) to teaching-centered/content-focused (passive learner engagement). This study explored how faculty teaching experience influenced faculty conceptions and their approaches to teaching. The authors hypothesized that more experienced educators appreciate and apply active learning approaches. Methods The authors used a cross-sectional survey to collect anonymous data from the Basic Science faculty at Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine (VTCSOM). The survey included the Conceptions of Learning and Teaching scale (COLT; Jacobs et al. 2012) and demographic information. They assessed instrument reliability with Cronbach’s alpha and examined relationships between variables with correlation and chi-square and group differences with ANOVA. Results Thirty-eight percent (50/130) of faculty responded to the survey. COLT scores for student-centered (4.06 ± 0.41) were significantly higher (p < 0.001) than teacher-centered (3.12 ± 0.6). Teacher-centered scores were lower (p < 0.05) for younger (30–39, 2.65 ± 0.48) than older faculty (50–59, 3.57 ± 0.71) and were negatively correlated with using multiple teaching methods (p = 0.022). However, 83% (39/50) reported using both traditional lectures and active approaches. Discussion Faculty conceptions about teaching showed appreciation for active learning, but a tendency to use traditional teaching methods interspersed with student-centered ones. Teaching experience was not related to faculty conceptions but was related to their teaching approaches. The amount of time dedicated to teaching was related to the appreciation of active learning, and young teachers were more student-oriented.

AbstractMuch has been written about instructor attitudes towards lecture capture, particularly concerning political issues such as opt-out policies and the use of recordings by management. Additionally, the pedagogical concerns of lecturers have been extensively described and focus on the belief that recording lectures will impact on attendance and will reduce interactivity and active learning activities in lectures. However, little work has looked at the relationship between attitudes towards lecture capture and broader conceptions of learning and teaching. In this pre-registered study, we administered the Conceptions of Learning and Teaching scale and a novel lecture capture attitude scale to 159 higher education teachers. We found that appreciation of active learning predicted more positive attitudes towards lecture recordings as an educational support tool, whilst higher teacher-centred scores predicted greater concern about the negative educational impact of recordings. The effects observed were small; however, they are strong evidence against the view that it is instructors who value participatory and active learning that are opposed to lecture capture. Exploratory analyses also suggested that those who did not view recordings as an essential educational resource record fewer of their lectures, highlighting the real-world impact that attitudes can have, and further strengthening the need for staff to be provided with evidence-based guidance upon which to base their teaching practice.
