Chapter 2 focuses on the National Museum of Taiwan History (國立台灣歷史博物館‎) opened in 2011 in the city of Tainan. The first in Taiwan dedicated to telling the story of Taiwan’s development into nationhood, the museum centers its narrative around the tropes of inclusiveness, ethnic diversity, immigration, and political pluralism. In the process, it avoids the excesses of a more radical Taiwanese nativism and presents a “consensus” view of the history of the island that de-emphasizes historical traumas, such as inter-ethnic conflict, the horrendous treatment of Taiwan’s indigenous peoples, and the February 28 Incident.

The article introduces clay figurines of eagles and terracotta of a Roman soldier, which were found during excavations at the Lower City of Olbia in the 1930—1940-ies, and are kept in the National Museum of the History of Ukraine. The iconography of the eagles is similar to the terracotta statuette of an eagle found in the praetorium building in the Upper City of Olbia. The series of rooms, in which the eagle figurines were found, belong to the Roman garrison structures, which were located in the port area of the city. Terracotta eagle figurines could be used in military sanctuaries, and imitate Roman military standards, or be associated with the worship of Jupiter. Analogies to these products are known from the Roman fortresses on the Danube and in Dacia province. The fragment of terracotta with a shield was a part of a Roman soldier figurine with hanging limbs. The warrior was depicted wearing a Roman military cloak (sagum). This indicates his higher rank, in contrast to the soldiers dressed in tunics. In his left hand he holds a shield (clipeus), which depicts a deity in armor, with rays above his head. The terracotta depicts warriors armed with gladius, and belted with a Roman military belt (cingulum militare). They depict the servicemen of the auxiliary troops of the Roman army — auxilia, or, given the non-standard shape of their shields, the sailors of the Moesian fleet (milites classiarii), whose units were stationed in Olbia, as is known from the epigraphic finds. The places of their finds mark the points of deployment of the Roman troops in the Northern Black Sea region. These terracottas could serve as votives in ritual rites associated with the cult of Mithras, which appears in Olbia as a result of the Roman garrison deployment in the city during the second half of the 2nd — first half of the 3rd c. AD.

This article explores the case study of a coal mine that was first tunneled under Sydney Harbour in 1897 but closed in 1931. Specifically, it examines how the history of the mine intersects with aesthetics, race, colonialism, and Indigenous dispossession. Centered on the story of an English mining company that first sought a mine site in a pastoral area of the city, but under public pressure was forced to select instead a grimy working class suburb on the opposite harbor shore, the article argues that environmental aesthetics and tastes in beauty collaborated with extractivism. The argument emerges that economics, art, and aesthetics are inextricably linked in this history and further, that while the mine excited the industrial imagination through the aesthetic of the sublime, and associations with darkness and vastness, it conflicted with colonial settler tastes for the pastoral imagination defined by the aesthetics of the beautiful and its associations with light. The article discusses the context of a settler economy in lands stolen from Indigenous peoples, and how conceptualizations of the sublime and beautiful, as well as dark and light, were aligned with the racialization of the properties of coal and space above and below ground.

Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim is the historical resting place of St. Olav and an end point of many of the pilgrimage trails in Norway. The history of the cathedral intersects with the history of the city and the region as one of significant economic and religious significance. The movement of St. Olav’s relics throughout the city matches urban and religiocultural development of city and nation. This chapter explores the cathedral’s architecture and use and how contemporary engagements with the space facilitate ritual creativity and are part of the hosting and welcoming of pilgrims. Along with other centers of hospitality, the cathedral looms especially large as a main attraction point for both tourists and pilgrims in Trondheim, as an adaptable space for many purposes. The annual St. Olavsfest is a ten-day festival that begins with the saint’s day and features liturgies, concerts, plays, lectures, a medieval market, and televised panel discussions to involve city and region in the celebration of local history and culture. Controversial topics such as the colonial repression of Sámi indigenous peoples, the violent heritage of Viking king St. Olav, religious and other forms of discrimination, social injustice, and international solidarity are among the themes discussed during the festival. Thus, the “protest” in Protestantism is reflected in a critical engagement with history and with the ongoing development of the ritualization of Christian history and heritage in Norway.

This article focuses on two British colonial territories in southern and central Africa, Mashonaland and Nyasaland in the late 19th to early 20th centuries. It concerns the history of Afrikaner missionaries from South Africa’s Dutch Reformed Church (DRC), and their relationships with opposing interest groups. The period in question saw some inter-ethnic conflict among indigenous peoples, which included an underground slave trade, as well as much colonial-indigenous strife. The article particularly considers the balancing act missionaries sought to achieve in terms of their paternalistic, yet interdependent relationships with indigenous rulers over against their equally ambiguous relationships with the colonial authorities. As such this article presents a novel way of looking at Afrikaner missionaries and their entanglements with indigenous leaders.

Apart from a short history of Banat Zrenjanin, as well as descriptions of inter-ethnic events that take place in the city, the paper analyzes the function of inter-ethnic events in the city, based on evidence collected from the literature and the media. The analysis showed that inter-ethnic events in Zrenjanin primarily reflect the multicultural city policy to promote ethnic diversity and tolerance, as well as contribute to the development of the regional identity of Banat. Despite that fact they are often used for the revival of ethnicity, which contributes to the division in the local community.

This article has as main theme the presence of the indigenous peoples Macushi and Wapishana at the Capital of Roraima, Brazil, and it is based on the critical reading of historiography produced from the eighteenth century about the occupation of the State. This historiographical return aims to understand the socio-political relations, conflicts and other factors that underlie the absence of such indigenous peoples in the formation history of the city, and the construction of socio-cultural demands of Macushi and Wapishana residing in the urban area of Boa Vista.

This chapter details the history of Copenhagen and Houston. In Copenhagen, we showcase the medieval roots of the city and how it was compacted into a relatively small area until the mid-nineteenth century. Since that time, many economic, governmental, and population changes have occurred. In Houston, we study how the younger city took off with the rise of the oil and gas industries, particularly after World War II. We discuss rising ethnic diversity in the context of the city’s tradition of guidance by economic and civic elites. We conclude by focusing on two points of crisis in the cities – in the mid-nineteenth century and in the 1980s and early 1990s – and how those shaped how they came to be Market Cities and People Cities.

Dytynets of ancient Kyiv is an inner fortified part within the “city of Volodymyr”, with a total area of 10—12 hectares. At different times, its territory has been explored by many archaeologists. During the period from 1907 to 2013, 22 archaeological objects were discovered and researched on the territory of the Kyiv Dytynets, as well as separate buildings, furnaces and various finds from ancient Rus’ cultural strata related to jewellery. All of them were located within the “city of Volodymyr” and were recorded at the sites of 10 excavations, namely: five objects were located at the address — Volodymyrska st., 2 (territory of the National Museum of History of Ukraine); two — on Volodymyrska st., 7—9; one — on Desiatynna st., 2; eight — on Velyka Zhytomyrska st., 2; four — on Volodymyrska st., 8; two — on Desiatynna st., 3—A—B, 5—D. According to their chronology, these objects are dated by the XI — first half of the XIII c. After analyzing the location of jewellery workshops, there can be identified at least two large focuses — the quarters of jewellers, where the masters lived and worked. The first (largest) was located along the even side of modern Volodymyrska st. and stretched from the northern slope of Starokyivska Mountain to Volodymyrska st., 8. From the west it was limited to Goncharnyi ravine, and from the east — the carriageway of Volodymyrska st. There were 11 jewellery production facilities on its territory. The total area of this quarter was about 3.5 hectares. This centre at different times could serve the Grand Ducal court with its palace complexes, work for the needs of the boyar nobility and clergy. The second was located between the streets: Volodymyrska (from the west) and Desiatynna (from the east). In the south, it was limited by the carriageway of Velyka Zhytomyrska st. There were 10 jewellery production facilities on its territory. The total area of this quarter was about 1.2 hectares. Most likely, this centre belonged to a greater extent to the estate of the Fedoriv monastery of the XII c. and served the princely court of Mstyslav Volodymyrovych, who built the monastery. Thus, since the XI c. on the territory of Kyiv Dytynets the jewellery manufacturing had been developing rapidly. Production workshops spread over an area of almost 5 hectares and existed until Kyiv devastation in 1240.

Wojciech A.J. Gluziński, a philosopher and an outstanding Polish theoretician of museology, passed away on 26 March 2017. He was born on 31 March 1922 into an intellectual family in Lviv. He commenced studying philosophy in 1945 at the Jagiellonian University in Cracow, and continued at the Faculty of Humanities at the University & Polytechnic in Wrocław. He got an MA in philosophy in 1952, but even in 1949 he had already started working in the Old Townhouse (later the Historical Museum of the City of Wrocław), a branch of the Silesian Museum (since 1970 the National Museum) in Wrocław. He was connected with the National Museum until the end of his career. In the following years he held the posts of Head of Historical Department, Head and later Curator of the Department of History of Material Culture, and was the museum’s advisor and counsellor from 1991 to 1995. He organised a dozen permanent and temporary exhibitions during more than 40 years of working. He wrote numerous articles published in such periodicals as: “Annual of the Kłodzko Region”, “Annual of Silesian Ethnography” and “Annual of Silesian Art”. His long-term studies on the theory of museology resulted in a doctoral dissertation entitled Philosophical and methodological problems of museology written under the supervision of Prof. Kazimierz Malinowski in 1976 in the Institute of Conservation and Historic Monuments Studies at the Copernicus University in Toruń. The edited work was published in 1980 as a book entitled Underlying museology. Gluziński shared his opinions at numerous conferences abroad, and published articles in post-conference materials, including in “ICOFOM Study Series”, “Muzeologické Sešity” and in “Neue Museumskunde. Theorie und Praxis der Museumsarbeit”.
